I always wanted to join the military (army specifically) but drugs got ahold of me at a young age and took me down a road I wish I had avoided, now I'm 23 with a felony and feel like my dreams are crushed because of poor choices, the army is suppose to be about discipline, teamwork, pride, and dedication, no one needs to learn that more than former criminals and druggies, please give non-violent offenders a second chance,REPORT COMMENTS

I am a felon and most of you are fools. Second Chances were taken away with the rise of the internet and access to public records. The prevading belief; is that if you go to prison; you're sub Society and you become so dangerous you may no longer even possess a pocket knife. Your gun rights are taken away as well as your right to defend yourself or your family should; the eventuality arise. Yes even possessing a pocket knife is a crime for a felon. Do the research! Possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person. I agree with this petition; and also believe it is foolhardy. I can't even have a pocketknife what makes you believe they're going to give me an M16 and teach me to use it. My last criminal offence was in 2006. I have a wife a daughter and two dogs. I don't smoke or drink and I have a job. Was never on welfare when I got out of prison! I stand on my own feet! If you want to do a little more research you'll find that it starts with prisoners and ends with the public. the prison population are test subjects. To see if Society will allow it to happen to a microcosm (prison population). Once societal approval is given; the government can apply it to macrocosm ( Society itself). For all you idiots that cry about your guns being taken away! you allowed it to happen! it started with the mentally insane; and moved on to people committing domestic violence, finally settling on the prison population and felons as a whole. Now it's your turn to you reap what you have sewn. Knowledge is power do your own research. I didn't say this to create a debate Love it or hate it I don't care it's the truth.REPORT COMMENTS

Currently in the process of getting a moral waiver for a misdemeanor pot charge. Getting in is kind of ridiculous honestly, you can possibly get a felony waiver if it happened as a juvenile, but I'm pretty sure no as an adult.REPORT COMMENTS

I am a felon with a few felonies because i made some dumb decisions as a young adult, over a decade ago. I am trying to join a branch of the military to show myself, my family, and society i am not that person, i have better moral character than that. I was misguided early in live but i know I can prove to be an asset however im disbarred from joining because my past haunts me.REPORT COMMENTS

It has been nearly 10yrs since I've committed my felonious crime. I served my time in prison and finished state parole. Since then I have gone to school and received college education and work full time to provide for my family. I am able to vote and have been summoned for jury duty and I am a law abiding citizen that pays my taxes. I have made a few mistakes in my life just like many others have and just like others who are public and government officials who make mistakes and break the law but yet they're able to serve our cities our counties our states and our country the only difference is that I have been caught. It should be that us ex felons have the opportunity to serve in the United States Armed Forces once we have proven ourselves worthy after a certain period of time but still within the time line for meeting age restrictions. Please change this law these restrictions that prevent us from serving our country.REPORT COMMENTS

I am a 29 year old college student. I enlisted in the Air Force when I was 20 but but got a DUI before I could leave for BASIC training. It was my dream ever since I was a small child to serve our country as a pilot in the Air Force. I had a really mixed childhood and decided to turn my life around when I was 16 by completing Grizzly Youth Academy, a ChalleNGe program on Camp SLO in San Luis Obispo, CA. I did well until I got my DUI and I was crushed when I learned that the AF would no longer accept me. This lead me on to a path of destruction and I ultimately wound up stealing to support my alcohol dependency. I wound up getting convicted for several property related felonies over the course of four years. I have now been sober for nearly four years, have completed probation, am working on getting as many of my convictions reduced to misdemeanors as possible, however there are two that are not eligible to be reduced. I am working on expungment as well, however that can be a lengthy process. I desperately want to serve my country and would gladly accept any position offered to me by any branch of the service. Some of the best memories of my life are from military Academy and I know that I have what it takes to rise to the call. Please allow non-violent felons serve our great country.REPORT COMMENTS

I am 19 & fresh out of High School, I was an average student & I Played Football all 4 years. After graduating, I didn't feel the urge to continue school but I always looked at the Military as an excellent choice. I wanted to wait until 2017 to try & start my career, hanging with the wrong crowd & making poor choices has now led me with a felony record. I never knew how hard it was to get a job with having a felony on your record. I was devastated when I was told I would no longer be able to join the armed forces. In all honesty I feel like the military would be the perfect way to turn my life around & have a fresh start. Military will make or break you while teaching you life lessons & disciple. I understand why felons should not be allowed to join, but has anyone every looked at it as them trying to get help & be guided down the correct path? Not only bettering themselves but serving for our country as well? It just doesn't make sense to make life harder for a felon when 9/10 they weren't brought up in the best environments. How can you break a cycle when you have no way out?REPORT COMMENTS

My 20 year old son has a felony theft charge on his record and is unable to join the military. He's an extremely smart hard working young man who made a single stupid mistake at 18 years old. Obama has now pardoned nearly 150 drug related felons, and many more with more severe charges, but he's not done a damn thing to help a young men like my son start their career in a productive, protective manner. I'll stop right there with Obama and his idiocies. I feel that any petty felon who can pass a screening, physical, and a drug test should be able to join any one of the United States Military Branches.REPORT COMMENTS

I believe felons or ex-felons should have the right to join any military branch they so desire. As long as they've proved to be a contributing member of society (which joining the military would be). It gives them a good fit into there future careers as it is already hard for them due to so many limitations as it is. We should not discriminate ones past mistakes. But only to look and see the man or woman in front of us today, and to better them off tomorrow! I believe it would also decrease the recidivism rate for the returning prisoners as it would give them hope and more discipline as well as many other positive outlooks. Thanks for everyone's respective imputs on this subject. Good luck.REPORT COMMENTS

I can also relate I am a repeat offender as well. My first dream was to join the military after high school. Instead I was caught up in drug related activities with an ex boyfriend whom they decided to pin on the both of us bc I plead the 5th.The sad thing is he's now facing s life sentence for more drug charges and I'm stuck in the world with no chance bc of my mistakes and bad decisions made when I was younger. That was 2007. It's now 2016 and I'm far from done. I'm 29 years ills with 2 children whom I can barely support due to the hold/restrictions society has on felons when it comes to giving second chances. The worst part is our children have to suffer with us bc the harder it is on us the harder it is on them. Now I have a dream I'll probably never get to come close to let alone a close minded world I have to prepare my children for the best way I can. The bible teaches us that no one is perfect. We teach our children that it is ok to make mistakes. Now we have to turn around and try to teach them how to be society perfect without society's help but rather society's continuing struggle. What a sad world.REPORT COMMENTS
