the truth is the gov doesnt care anymore about the public education. i believe they are trying to push everyone into more of a private school situation so that only the rich can afford to give a real education to their children.

This is a misguided attempt at Merit Pay which actually punishes those who have sought advanced degrees and National Board Certification by eliminating the incentives for higher salaries. It is a drastic Teacher Pay CUT.

I understand the need for change! I also understand that change cannot be beneficial for all, but isn't the purpose of education to help the student become lifelong learners? Here is the sad part to this mess; our students are capable of so much more than they give and we (society) have allowed them to remain irresponsible far longer than is necessary. When does a student take responsibility for their life? College! This is where they finally understand that they have to take responsibility for themselves and their actions. Actions actually have consequences, both financial and personal. Elected officials do see that, right? I guess I should not be surprised by the ignorance from both the Florida lobbyist and our elected officials. Any educated person can see the real problem here, (Students and teachers need to have consequences for THEIR FAILURE and successes. High School levels only!) If we really want to prepare our children for college, then we need to make high school a college preparatory facility, true to the college form in both pedagogical excellence and student responsibility.

Have you ever actually watched some of these children taking the FCAT before? If they are having a bad day due to circumstances beyond the teacher's control, I have seen it countless times, students just bubbling in the answers before even reading the passages! Then on the other hand you have students who are brilliant and regardless of what the teachers are teaching they will breeze through the FCAT while another student in the very same class will struggle. There are too many variables that come into play when administering a test and these children have NO IDEA the weight that it carries for the school system and teachers. This is a large burden for such young individuals to carry and a crime to those who have dedicated their lives to education at the current pay scale. Please DO NOT PASS THIS BILL!

As a future teacher currently in a MAT program, I find Senate Bill 6 disgraceful and ridiculous. I intern in a 9th grade American Government class and the last time I taught one of the students, a 15 year old African American boy, said "Ms. Jordan, I was reading about that bill that is going to pay teachers with Master's degrees the same as other teachers. Isn't that encouraging our teachers to be dumber?" Another boy in the class said "I can always tell the difference between my teachers who have Master's degrees and the ones who only have Bachelors. The MA teachers are way better and way smarter." Considering where Florida stands with the rest of the country in terms of education, I find it disgusting that you are trying to pass a bill that further discourages brilliant people to become teachers.

I feel that the passing of this bill will not only degrade teachers, but also put the quality of teaching in jeopardy. Congress should find a way to put the pressure on the students, not give them more power than they already have. This bill is giving teachers that came into this profession with a passion to improving the education of our future leaders a second thought. No one in their right mind is going to choose teaching as their future carreer, and current teachers will definitely begin opting for another job. Say NO to this bill!
