Senate Bill #6 will determine a teacher's "merit" based on the test scores of his/her students (this is just one part of the entire dangerous bill). I don't want Florida join the ranks of other states in our nation who have tried to turn education into a corporate entity. We are educating the children who will become this nation's greatest resource, our human resource. We are not stamping molds out on the factory line. How can you treat these precious treasures, on whom our future depends, as pawns in a numbers game? Student assessment is used by teachers to drive future instruction. Teachers are educated in how to utilize the data to re-teach and continue striving for excellence from his/her students. Sometimes gains are made quickly and sometimes over a longer period of time. Please do not presume now to use these assessments against the teacher. Data, simply for the sake of data, is not effective. Teacher merit should not be based on standardized student assessment. If a teacher's certifications and higher degrees count for nothing, then you are saying education itself does not matter. Teacher merit should be based on observable and measurable standards and should be evaluated inside the classroom, by those who are familiar with the multi-dimensional aspect of each student; not in Tallahassee, or DC, from a two-dimensional graph. These are our children; my children. I speak as a mother and as an educator. Please hear me!

I am watching the progress of this bill in total disbelief. I invite you-PLEASE come to my classroom-and see what I deal with each and every day. Please let me sit down and let me show you all the differentiated instruction I do on a daily basis to try and reach these kids. And my job is in danger of being cut?? What a slap in the face!

The most needy, poverty riddled, challenged, and medically needy students are being discriminated against in this bill. Experienced teachers will want to transfer to work only with the higher achieving students. Why is it that we are abandoning our students who struggle to do well. Teachers who are trying so hard to help these students will be punished severely monetarily resulting in a mass exodus of good teachers being willing to work with these students and make less than half salary. Many students have no support at home. Most teachers try desperately to reach these students so they do not give up on themselves. This is the thanks we get for trying so hard. Shame on all of you who feel that every child comes from a wonderful family environment that is supportive. What does one say to a student who is doing their best and improving slightly, but not good enough for this senate bill. Shame on you all!

I am having a comprehending how in good conscience this could actually be proposed as a serious proposal. It shows just how this congressman has no respect for the teaching profession. To change it from a profession to a sales position, (being paid by commission according to the number of students you have saved regardless of their home life, I.Q., motivation, etc.)demonstrates the sheer lack of respect or understanding of what teachers accomplish.

As someone who has spent years earning advanced degrees so I can better serve the students I work with, it is extemely frustrating to see that my hard work and dedication will count for nothing. I'll be paying my student loans until my four year old daughter is of college age. This law would lead to a significant reduction of base pay, with any performance pay not coming unitl the year is basically finished. Since my wife and I both work in education, we would both face this reduction in salary. Even if we earned the perofrmance pay it would come too late. This bill would likely lead to bankruptcy for us and many other educators that we know. Additionally, there are so many factors that impact a childs learning. Teachers are being made the scapgoats for all of societies problems. It is time that parents and the students themselves also be held acountable. Even great teachers will struggle without the porper supports.

This bill assumes that the teacher is the only factor affecting student learning. I sure wish that were the case. My job would be much, much easier because I know I can teach. Unfortunately, many factors such as hereditary, environment, attendance and parental support play huge roles in whether or not a student is successful. If this bill is passed, many dedicated teachers will find alternative careers. And rest assured, we will remember in November!

Hiring and firing of incompetent teachers needs to be addressed. Most of us in the educational arena are there for the good and success of each and every student. Don't bind our hands and and take away our drive and expect victory in the classroom. Educators work as a team. Growth, achievement and success breed from this type of professional environment.
