In 2013 I had my first accident at work that hurt my lower back and pinched my sciatic nerve. I was treated horribly by workers compensation doctors and was never given any options for relief of my pain. I worked in the retail industry and it was very harmful to my back and legs. In 2014 I had another accident at work that aggravated my back even worse and hurt my neck. Once again I received no relief from my injuries from workers compensation. In August of 2014 I had to stop working because my body couldn't handle it any longer. In October 2014 my legs just started going numb and giving out and I was reduced to a cane and eventually a wheelchair. My list of diagnosis's goes on and on. I stay at home with my 2 kids and I have to have a care giver come in 3 days a week to help me with cooking and cleaning. I am not allowed to drive anymore. I can't work because even on medication for pain my body still won't function. My medicine is the only thing that gives me the little function I have. Luckily I have doctors who know how much I need it and are still able to prescribe it, but without it I wouldn't have any function at all. Without my medication I would lose custody of my kids. Without it I wouldn't be able to get up to go to the restroom. I am not an addict. I didn't choose this way of life. Others like me are being treated horribly by doctors and this drug epidemic is being blamed on us. We are not the cause for heroine on the streets. We don't make or solicit methamphetamines. We don't get this medicine from our doctors to sell on the corner, we have to take it to live and to function. Not all of us have the option of medical marijuana, and even then some states are tightening the restraints on that. All we want is a chance live pain free or even slightly pain free. Taking away our medication is taking away our chance to live. It's taking away our survival. We're not buying drugs off the street and we shouldn't be punished for doing the right thing and getting it from medical practitioners that understand what we are going through. We are patients, NOT addicts! We deserve a fighting chance at life just like every other human being.Mar 1st, 2016Someone from Gainesville, FL signed.

The pain med laws are becoming stricter and stricter. Patients are referred to pain management. A person in chronic pain has to go to the doctor once a month because no refills are permitted on pain meds. Now drug abusers are putting fentanyl in heroine and more people are overdosing because the people on the streets are using stronger and stronger narcotics. Why do the patients who are in chronic pain have to suffer? Sitting at the doctor's office once a month costs more money for the patient and more pain from sitting there waiting. The patient must be drug tested quarterly and made to feel like a drug addict when they are not. The people abusing the meds are making it more difficult for the people who need them. Something needs to change. Not tightening the pain med laws once again causing doctors to be afraid to write necessary scripts for the people who are suffering and need them.REPORT COMMENTS

I am at the point of hopelessness. I have had severe arthritis since I was 17 years old. I have led an active life, became a nurse, had a family, all the while taking toxic medications to control the disease. The result is severe stomach irritation, various side effects, now I've had spinal surgery, knee surgery, one wrist fusion and need another. I can no longer work as a nurse. I'm so depressed because despite going to a pain management physician I can't get relief from pain. But worse than that is that I feel as if I"m a criminal. I go to pain doc every month, have random drug tests, may need to bring in bottle to check to see that I'm taking medicine as prescribed, I have to use same pharmacy and if they don't have what I need I go without or travel to another pharmacy but I have to call and let my doctor know that I used a different pharmacy or I could be in trouble. How does that make sense?Planning a vacation in advance is impossible. If I'm going to run out of medicine while on vacation I have to just go without. I can't get medicine early. They don't care. This is all due to over reaching government oversight. I feel hopeless and voiceless to get help. I feel like I"m viewed as an addict until I prove otherwise. The thing the government doesn't understand is that the drugs I take for arthritis, like remicade, methotrexate, prednisone have far worse side effects. Even death. But they are worried about those who want the meds to get high. I don't get high, I just get some short term decrease in the pain that is all over my body. This is such cruelty! Addicts will find drugs to get high. They've moved on to heroin now. And there are far more fatalities and intensive addiction with heroin. The government sets laws without thought to those who they are hurting. We are the ones who follow the rules and the ones who are affected by the laws. The addicts are still addicted to something else.REPORT COMMENTS

My husband recently ruptured 2 disc (L4-L5 and L5-S1) that was confirmed via MRI. Our doctor perscribed pain medication after receiving the results. As of today the doctor refused a refill and acted as if he was abusing the medication. He only received 30 tablets and was to be taken every 4-6 hours PRN (as needed). Which only taking 3x/day, the medication would be gone in only 10 days. We are both in the medical field as nurses and have been working for close to 15 years each. He never used or needed any pain medicine until this incident. I am outraged because his referral for the neurosurgeon is over a month away. There is no reason he should be left to deal with the pain without necessary medication all because others choose to abuse the medication. Something needs to change and hopefully this will help.REPORT COMMENTS

I had a bi-level fusion. My surgeon recommends that I stay on OxyContin till I'm healed. I was on Fentanyl Patches for over 5 years. Now I'm down to only 2 pills per day. I recently moved and to find a good doctor who will prescribe this drug is ridiculous! the ones who do, don't care about you or your health. They treat you badly because they know its hard for you to find another doctor. I just want to get well and have been progressing by being able to take these drugs and do the painful therapy. And, God forbid I have to stay on these drugs for quality of life! I am so sick and tired of the DEA and how they view people who are really sick and need these drugs. Its the saddest and most upsetting thing I HAVE SEEN.REPORT COMMENTS

Said "no" to drugs at the tender age of 16 just eleven days shy of my seventeenth birthday. I was beaten up for not taking drugs and for not having sex. The assailant got 28 days in a work farm, I got life as a Quadriplegic confined to a wheelchair. For sixteen years I didn't take any thing but a Tylenol for pain. A drunk driver hit me in a head on collision, and aging has caused my body to deteriorate. Hypersensitive to sensation over my entire body, I feel every little thing 10 fold. My doctor had to explain to me about "Quality Of Life" because I was reluctant to take anything after what had happened to me. Now, with a secondary spinal cord injury and multiple health issues, such as Osteoarthritis in my shoulders, neuropathy in my neck and legs, feet, I need my pain medication to function. Like someone who needs insulin for Diabetes, or Antidepressants for depression, etc. I need my pain medication to simply function from severe chronic pain. I am a patient not an addict. My doctor should be the only one to treat my condition not the government. Without knowing the individual, the condition of how some of us got here , there are new guidelines for how the patients doctors treat chronic pain. This is NOT the way to go about addressing the Opiate problem in this country, by targeting patients who suffer from legitimate chronic pain conditions. It's the ones who use and abuse the pain medication who hurt it for the ones who sincerely need it. Not one politician has been addressing the astronomical Meth Amphetamine scourge that has been sweeping this country.REPORT COMMENTS

I was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia in 2008 after a dentist who had attempted to pull a tooth. I had no idea how horrible this illness would become but now I know the pain is unbearable most of the time. I have no job because the pain is so intense that I cannot work without my illness becoming an issue and causing me to miss work. I have now had 5 surgeries trying to alleviate the pain but ending up with complications related to the surgeries. I know drug addicts that choose to take narcotics to get a buzz. Due to the population of addicts that choose to be drains on society they make it more and more difficult for the people who have true pain to get treated fairly. I hate the fact that I am treated like an addict and subjected to testing because of the addicts. I wish the government would stop interfering with the Physicians who are trying to treat individuals with chronic pain. Why is it OK for a Physician to prescribe crazy amounts of medications to the actors/actresses and professional athletes but the normal citizen cannot get what they need to live a semi-normal life? When is the government going to do something to stop the drug abuse in Hollywood and on the Professional athletic events? They do not care to make my life miserable. Why is their life more important? They may make the next goal, touchdown, or movie? We all are required to have health insurance. So again why can we not get the treatment we deserve? I hope the government can wake up and see what they are doing to the citizens of this great nation. If most of us could get the treatment we truly needed to live semi-normal lives we could work and not be dependent on the government to live day to day. I know I would rather work 16 hours a day than live another hour in the pain I am suffering. Please government officials look at what you are doing to the citizens of our nation and ask yourself one question. If I had incurable pain and could not work, play golf, enjoy my children/grandchildren, how would I feel if my physician told me NO you cannot have the medication that could allow you to continue with your life? One more question. How would you feel if you lost everything you had worked so hard for because you could not work due to chronic pain? I guess this really doesn't apply to the government officials because no physician would refuse to give him/her the medications they needed to live a normal life because they are not a routine visit; they are a VIP so they get whatever they want. That includes their family members as well. Just say who you are related to and the treatment changes. Guidelines no longer exist; what a great nation we live in today.REPORT COMMENTS

I was taught as an RN to treat pain within a timely manner! Also taught a patient pain is whatever they say it is! I still agree & believe people 50-70 are not to be considered addicts when they have worked, paid taxes! Because pain is an indicator something is abnormal in the body, an acute or chronic condition the underlying cause diagnosed, the pain needs treated! In reading the comments I noticed the frequent use of words, suicide, depression, this hinders healing and Dr.'s know this! I wonder when the reduction of office visits to PCP's, cost to insurance companies be noticed as this is all about money! Too sad the aging and injured cannot get treated for pain, yet clean needles are given to her ion addicts! It seems our government want many to commit suicide, reduction in healthcare cost! Camouflaged communism!REPORT COMMENTS

I have been a RN for 24 years. I was recently diagnosed with Ehlers-danlos Syndrome and Osteoporosis. I am only 46. I continue to work but had to switch from nursing in the hospitals to working as a Case Manager for Workers Compensation. I would not be able to remain in the work force without medications for pain. I usually work from home and go to appointments around the region. After going out, driving, waiting sometimes 2-3 hours, meeting the doctor and driving home I am in so much pain I cannot function. Pain medication after I get home helps me get relief from the day and helps me maintain my sanity. Please stop this war on doctors that are trying to help the chronic pain patients survive and get by. Please stop the WAR ON THE DISABLED! As a case manager for Work Comp I do see abuse of narcotics but I also see the legitimate people who require the pain medication.REPORT COMMENTS

As a person who has suffered years of debilitating pain, as well as advocated for other chronic pain sufferers... the current war on chronic pain patients is startling. Oxycontin began/is as a Schedule 2 drug, but is cited as the main drug to kick off prescription abuse... Hydrocodone was recently listed as a schedule 2 drug .... a schedule 2 drug is the most tightly controlled prescription drugs available... therefore, if it did not work to control oxycontin, what on earth does the government think making hydrocodone a schedule 2 will do?!?! I can tell you exactly what these unfair laws and rules do, they criminalize and demonize law abiding citizens. If a grandmother with severe arthritis is taking hydrocodone for her pain, where she once could get refills, she now must go in once a month (How can a little old lady on social security checks afford all these visits?) Because of the humiliation, degradation, and hoops chronic pain patients have to go through, we have a 200% higher chance of committing suicide... because we would rather end our lives, rather than begging for crumbs of pain relief to get just a moment away from the agony we live with each day! "The greatness of a country is based on how it treats the least of it's citizens" Kicking injured and Ill people while they are down? Shame on you!REPORT COMMENTS

My entire life has come crashing to an end since I was disabled 11 yrs ago at the age of 20 with severe inoperable scoliosis from 18 impacts at a high speed. I could have a life, but because of THE WAR ON THE DISABLED, I lie in bed having sezieures and screaming in pain 24-7-365. We have the medication I need to have a normal life (walk and sit for a few hours) but do not have access because we would rather give it to Football players for our entertainment and actors and musicians for their enjoyment and remove access from the general community. That is wrong and you people will go to Hell and experience what the Disabled in this country experience everyday and I hope you suffer it for eternity. At 68/38 BP avg, my body will be giving up soon at the age of 33, now totally broken down from the pain, my organs are slowly stopping function but I hope those of you with no experience personally with chronic pain that are enabling THE WAR ON THE DISABLED Suffer this Pain for ALL ETERNITY as you deserve.
