There are people who are chronically ill and have chronic pain. There are also drug seekers. We need to make sure we take care of the people instead of letting them suffer.

I suffer from CRPS/RSD...its a nerve damage condition, the nerve won't calm down. I feel like I'm on fire, with stabbing, burning pain...its maddening. Please help us get medication we need to survive. We are responsible people just trying to live a life with dignity and quality, we deserve that. Unfortunately, being denied the meds that work only force you to withdraw, some commit suicide, others become heroin users, our own country, our own people. Doesn't anyone care anymore? Its not fair to keep the Drs from treating their patients, where is the compassion.

I'm a 64 year old man with 2 hips replaced and both shoulder replaced. I also have had 6 spine surgeries with 2 fusions with hardware and just had a cervical lam from c1 to c7 that damaged my cord and left me with no felling in either hand. My surgeon has told me I have problems at every lumbar level that will require surgery to repair. My pain doctor has prescribed Tramadol ! Do I have to become a felon to get relief ? Please rethink this new policy. It's just making a bad problem much worse.

I went for 14 months to 5 different hospitals, in 3 different states, and because no one could find the problem on CT scans, etc., they labeled me as a drug seeker. Finally, the 5th hospital listened, did exploratory surgery, and found and fixed the problem. During that 14 months, I suffered excruciating pain, and I was treated like a common street drug seeker!! I had to suffer needlessly!! It is disgusting at how far to the opposite extreme medical care has become concerning pain. As far as the elderly are concerned, which is more beneficial?? Living life with more quality on pain medicine, or living life with no quality without pain medicine?? Allow doctors to treat their patients pain as they see necessary!!

I made mistakes in my original letter, so I made a few changes and hopefully I didn't miss anything this time. I am a disabled US Army veteran. I receive all of my medical treatment via the VA. I have no insurance and cannot afford to see doctors outside the VA. Therefore I cannot afford to go to a private pain clinic. My primary care doctor told me that I was too young and that she would not right pain medicine unless it was blood and bone. I have heterotopic bone which look like spider webs of bone running through my muscle, steel plates in my lower leg, degenerative joint disease in my hips and knees, chronic instability in both shoulders with arthritis and moderate sciatic nerve damage. I have a cyst in my hip that is caused specifically from bone on bone. I have legit debilitating pain. I have no quality of life because of my chronic pain. This very same primary care doctor refused to write the old man neighbor of mine his regularly prescribed pain medicine when his doctor was out for the day. He is almost 70 years old. One of the excuses she gave me for not being able to treat chronic pain with schedule pain medicine was my age. I am 41. It is obvious and certain that she just refuses to treat me. This is unfair to me as I am a honorably discharged United States Army veteran with severe chronic pain which is debilitating to my life.

I hope someday that pain patients will be treated like human beings again. Unfortunately it won't come in time for me. I can't get the help I need (have had chronic pain for 40 years). I find myself these days learning about the easiest way to leave this world. A person can only take so much for only so long. Good luck to those who are hurting with no relief.

I have a rare neurological disease called Syringomyelia. Syringomyelia is where a cystic lesion WITHIN the spinal cord (syrinx)that is filled with cerebral spinal fluid. This sounds painful to most people whether the syrinx is small, moderate, or large; however those of us with 'small' syrinxes are often told the issues from this condition is in our head. This includes small things such as random hiccups, rib sublaxations, a heart attack (yes it happened to me,) and pain to name a few. Syringomyelia causes moderate to severe pain both in humans and canines. Far to many humans with this go without adequate pain relief. Pain causes a human to strain, right? Well Syringomyelia sufferers are told to not even strain to defecate because doing so could enlarge the syrinx! We need help! All chronic pain sufferers do!

Have a shattered vertebrae that is too damaged to repair surgically. I went to 2years of pain clinics that did nothing to manage the pain. Then my doctor prescribed opiate pain medication which I take only to reduce pain to a tolerable level. Worked fine for 5 years but now doctor says HMO lawyers say liability is too costly so no more opiate pain medication. Since when is treatment decided by lawyers in America? Congress must take action on behalf of people who are in real pain and there are many thousands of us. Also are there any support groups out there that are helping fight this travesty?
