I see this a lot in Orlando where Hispanics make up about 50% of the population. I was born in this country, most of them were not and are here illegally. I shouldn't have to learn Spanish to be legally employed in my own country.Aug 23rd, 2015Someone from Long Beach, CA writes:
A Mexican told me when he attained management he required bilingualism to screen out caucasians. Similarly he said freinds ordered food, etc in Spanish to create a demand for Spanish speakers at fast food chains, etc. He said this is something they do as a people.REPORT COMMENTS

The end of another day of seeking employment has come to a close. All my managerial and overnight experience means nothing because I do not "habla espanol". I give up I think I will just turn to a life of crime. Its not just the spanish speakers though, how come the very few times I have been in a walmart its filled with under educated pregnant black women sitting around talking. Its across the whole spectrum, but if I see "bilingual required" one more time on craigslist I am gonna destroy the world with maximum rage level.REPORT COMMENTS

If an English-speaking American went to live & work in Mexico/Central America/South America, he/she would be required to speak the local language (Spanish). Why do American employers feel the need to make us learn/adjust to the foreigners' language?!? In the region where I live, prospective employers are asking for Armenian & Russian language skills as well. It's sickening how we've pandered to the non-English speaking people who come here and talk trash about America while getting various types of public assistance (food, housing, medical care), drive w/o a license or car insurance, earn American dollars under-the-table (thus not paying income taxs), then turn around and send that money 'home' overseas. (They're robbing this country by not consistently paying employer- & income-taxes.) They expect *us* to run our businesses in the same manner as they did "in the old country." English-up, folks! I'm tired of being treated like a foreigner in my own country! You're on our soil now; so learn & adapt, or go back to your country.REPORT COMMENTS

Ask yourself why 94,000,000 Americans have either given up or dropped out of the work force. I doubt it's because they're all lazy. Illegal immigrants are ripped off daily by their own people, if they spoke English and we had simply followed current immigration law and built a fence that wouldn't happen. No illegals means no coyotes, no poor working conditions and a whole lot less drugs smuggled by these people because cartels threaten their families if they don't.REPORT COMMENTS

YES! This happens over and over and it's so hard anymore for US-born, English-only speakers to be considered for jobs they're otherwise qualified for. Learn enough English to function in day-to-day business.REPORT COMMENTS

I am an American born citizen who was taught to speak English here in the United States. The current economic/job situation is a tremendous hardship alone just trying to gain employment where there are very few jobs. On a continual basis, I am forced to ignore at least 80% of the advertised jobs because you MUST BE BILINGUAL...and/or BILINGUAL PREFERRED. And, the number is growing daily. This is purely EMPLOYMENT/ DISCRIMINATION. I did not earn over 10 years of my qualifications, skills, and experience because I spoke a different language. I have contributed many years of my tax dollars into this country to help make it what it is, only to be dismissed. My experience came honestly from a lot of effort and hard work. T eliminate me and/or disqualify me from gainful employment because I do not speak someone's preferred language of choice, is nothing more than DISCRIMINATION, PREJUDICE, FAVORITISM, BIAS......and this list continues. I am speaking for many American people out there that this needs to change. Our livelihoods depend on it. It needs to stop now. This issue is long, long, overdue to be addressed. Non-immigrant Americans are suffering the most in this outrageous crime. Be our voice!REPORT COMMENTS

I live in California where more than half of employment postings state being bilingual is a requirement. I have also been to interviews where they, after they learn I am not bilingual, say they can't hire me. I should NOT have to learn a foreign language to obtain a position. My skills, education, and experience should be more than enough.REPORT COMMENTS

Hello, I'm an Auto-cad Architectural Draftsman here in Miami Florida, Also most Architects here are sending the jobs out to South America to complete the construction documents, and then are send them back electronically by the computer in seconds for cheaper labor cost. Also, on top of that, I shouldn't be discriminated against by the color of my skin. I was born here in Miami, and most the employers here will not hire Americans, who only speak English, and I don't look Spanish either. On the other hand, I've seen many Spanish people who have been hired who only speak Spanish? American people are not racists here in the United States, and do not think that way, and we don't bring racist baggage here from other countries and assimilate it. Slavery ended here after the Civil War. Americans will hire anyone who is willing to work, regardless of skin color, and or language preferences. This is America, lets keep it that way. Be an American, "hire" an American!REPORT COMMENTS

I just moved to Texas from PA and I am unable to find a job due to this requirements and I see nothing but signs stating "now hiring bilingual". I feel like at 49 spending all this time getting a college degree was a complete waste as no one will hire me as I am not 100% bilingual. I understand it, but don't speak it fluently so I guess I am out of luck in the job market. This should be against the U.S. Constitution.REPORT COMMENTS

I grew up on a military base in Germany. I learned how to speak, read, and write in German because I was in that countrt. I am also a disabled veteran. The last thing I expected when I became a civillian is to be unemployable because I'm not multilingual. All of my education, military training, and extensive experience amounts to nothing because I don't speak spanish. This is disgusting. Why should I have bothered sacrificing myself for a country and its people who clearly have absolutely no regard for myself or my family? Thanks a bunch - we really appreciate it!REPORT COMMENTS

Where does this end? Every job I am qualified for prefers bilingual Spanish speakers. My money can be spent without preferential treatment. The jobs I'm qualified for and applied to should reflect the same. People are moving here from all over the world! Yet, the people already here pay the price and can't work!! This is ridiculous! In the last 10 years in my county, I've seen every front desk, customer service agent replace all kinds of variety of workers to only HISPANIC or those that speak Spanish! Every store I enter plays only Hispanic music as if this culture ONLY shops there! How is this fair? How is this right? How has it been tolerated for so long?? And again I ask, where does it end? Everybody doesn't speak Spanish! What happened to equality???REPORT COMMENTS

It is discriminatory when our first language is English here in the United States. A person is not reqired to speak English anywhere else in the world! I've been told that my qualifications were excellent but because I don't speak spanish they would not hire me. I'm fed up with this! I'm American/Mexican and that's the first thing employers ask. "Do you speak spanish?" They ASSUME I am automatically bilingual and get upset with my "American accent". I see it happen all the time! This has got to stop. I work with several workers that don't speak any English! So tell me, what are we to do in an emergency situation and we can not communicate when there are hundreds of people involved?! This is not a foreign country, WE ARE THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! Make America great again!REPORT COMMENTS
