I am unemployed and am having difficulty getting a job because I do not speak Spanish. I am a first generation American. My parents only spoke their native tongue in the house; not speaking English in public was considered rude. Many of the jobs I'm interested in want or prefer a Spanish speaker. My parents made such efforts to learn English, and fit into the US and have us kids do as well and now I find it EXTREMELY difficult to get a job since I don't speak Spanish. It angers me that, with all the different cultures we have, that we cater only to the Spanish-speakers. No wonder they don't learn English, or simply PREFER to just speak Spanish--we have allowed it. Employers would rather hire someone who says they are bilingual--and they barely speak English, but speak Spanish-with little/no experience than to hire a worker with over 25 years of experience.

I'm a 10 year Air Force veteran and fell in love with Miami. I have rare credentials including experience in over 7 different fields, a Top secret and a combat medal. Yet I have been unable to get hired in the city I adore because I do not speak Spanish. EVERY job my resume matches includes Spanish preferred/required. I realized that no matter how great my credentials are it is easier and more beneficial to train someone not as qualified vs employing someone who doesn't speak Spanish. Where does that leave me. Fighting for scraps in the unemployment line or settling for something paying 10-13 an hr..

America is making American citizen suffer and as a black woman it breaks my heart to know I can't get a job as a American citizen because I don't speak Spanish"I'm not in Latin America" American people should come first!!! Democrats so worried about illegal immigration instead of what their going to do about black, white,Asian people who can't get jobs, prison industrial system that inslaves black men!!! Jobs going overseas and blaming white Americans for everything but allow Cubans and Mexicans to get away with being racist and harming black people driving us out our neighborhoods (black women dying during childbirth at a high rate, black women getting abortions which was created by racist Margret singer to stop black people from having kids no black economic wealth Asians own all the beauty supply stores and are racist to black people and black people fight for everyone but ourselves) white Americans are not to blame here it's the politics!!! CNN is openly disrespectful to the president of the United States and Don't talk about how middle eastern countries have black Africans as slaves but want to blame white Americans for everything! Remember Trayvon Martin was killed by George Zimmerman and philando Castile was killed by a Mexican/Hispanic!!! So CNN and Democrats stop using the race card also CNN black ancors stop calling other black people Coons because they have a different options my ancestors did not die and fight for me to act like a communist and force other Black People to vote Democratic only and our ancestors sat at the table with people they didn't like including racist people for us to have the things we have today!!! I had to move to Texas because my husband found a job in IT. He is from India and we got married last year. I have a Spanish last name and did not opt to change my last name to his and now I wish I had! People assume I speak Spanish just because I have a Spanish last name, and people ask me all the time if I speak Spanish when I apply for jobs! I try to only apply to jobs that does not show a bilingual requirement, but I still feel like I am getting passed over because my resume does not state I am bilingual. I worked in education as an ESL and writing tutor, and I get turned down for higher ed jobs because I do not speak Spanish! If the classes are taught in English, why should an employee be expected to speak Spanish for the students convenience? If they cannot converse in English, then they should not be attending the classes! I have been applying to jobs for 9 months now, and still do not have a job. My mother now regrets not raising me to speak Spanish now, even though my autistic sibling struggled to learn English words. My father's first language was Spanish, but he did not expect us to learn it because we spoke English in our community!

I am disgusted and horrified... I moved to this country when I was 13 years old because my parents wanted a better future for me and my siblings. I worked my butt off since then perfecting my English and continuing my education, we believed that this is the land of opportunities, that anyone could become anything with hard work and determination. I got my degree and I am fluent in two languages, as well as being able to carry on conversations in three other languages, I have good experience working in the non-profit world but guess what??? I cannot get a job because I don't speak Spanish. I am confused there are many Indians, Arabs, Asians etc... ethnicities. do we not matter??? why do the Hispanics get better treatment and more opportunities when they don't even bother learning English, how is this fair? I am crushed I love this country so much but this is so unfair that it is making me consider leaving.

It is a complete disgrace that everyone within certain jobs are expected to learn and know Spanish. I am an immigrant myself and was expected to, and did learn English. (This without the many free English language classes that are offered for free to the Hispanics). Considering that there are 350 different languages spoken by many different people, including children, makes this Spanish language requirement a complete disgrace to the rest of us immigrants. Are we not as worthy? Many immigrants, including myself who are not Hispanic, are forced to look the other way, while receiving no special treatment that the Hispanics receive. There are immigrants from many other nations in this country. To offer only one group of immigrants this special privilege is very humiliating to the rest of us, the other immigrants. Especially after we have learned English ourselves. This includes the Chinese, the Italians, the Greeks, the Arabics, the Japanese, the Dutch, the Japanese. The Swahili is another language spoken by those who are from Tanzania, Burundu, Congo, Kenya, Mayotte, Mozambiuqe, Oman, Rwanda, Somalia and Uganda. Other languages spoken by those who are from the Europe countries include Swedish, Danish, German, Belgian, Hungarian, Russian, Finnish, Norwegian and French. To put this into perspective, in Los Angeles, 185 different languages are spoken, while 192 different languages are spoken in New York. Considering that there are so many other different languages spoken and so many other nationalities, it therefore amazes me that the Hispanics continue to receive such preferential treatment, above others, while the rest of us have been forced to assimilate into the American culture and learn English? When the Europeans and Africans came many centuries ago, they learned to speak the English language and were never given any special treatment.

This is exactly why theres not many of you unacceptables in office. I've never seen anything like this. Period. Remember you ran away from your country because its sucks to join in with the other deplorables in an attempt to take over! News flash... it won't last long. Most of you are here illegally.. you know... touch sand them scream I'm free. None of you are different, classier than the next all Hispanics are all the same. clearly you needed the us to make it now you're here attempting to turn our land into a dictatorship. The entire State of Florida is aware of this and are already taken action! Go home and back to where you've come from. You all are really not wanted nor welcomed here. Let's just keep this place White and black or mixed but no Hispanic. Take it to south America where youd ought to be

This is a rampant problem in areas highly concentrated with illegal Hispanics. This needs to stop!!!!!!

I work in education in California and over the last two years I have been turned away time and again because I do not speak Spanish. I’ve even had an interviewer call me back and say “you were by far the best candidate we interviewed, but I can’t give you the position. You don’t speak Spanish.” I’ve turned in over 50 applications in the last two years. It’s to the point I’m considering leaving CA. I can’t move up or advance my career. I was taught that everyone should be treated equally. I feel like that no longer applies in California.

I'm finding more and more companies are only advertising to hire for bilingual candidates. I have been affected by the job market since the crash in 2008 and have been on government assistance. Now that things are starting to finally pick up jobs are hiring but a huge percentage want people that speak Spanish and English especially here in South Florida. I have been a Florida resident for over forty years, my parents and grandparents are from the US and they communicated at their jobs in English to pay their bills and to support me. I ask you as a US citizen that wants to work and needs to work to pass a law banning this so I have a decent chance to gain employment to survive here in the US as a citizen. And speaking English only as being an obstacle to find or gain employment.

I have had the most frustrating time trying to find a job in Los Angeles. Every jobs that I have the skills, education, and experience to match, there is a requirement for the candidate to be bilingual. This has to change! I have worked so hard all my life to attained both an undergraduate and graduate degree only to be excluded from jobs because I’m not bilingual. It’s already challenging enough to find employment being a black woman, and now you want to add bilingual requirements. English is the official language and that should be the only language requirement for jobs. There are way too many resources for people to learn to speak English in America.

Same goes for Mandarin and Cantonese! In the 20mi radius where I live, it’s mostly Asian and more difficult for a white person to get hired/ I know I haven’t gotten jobs because all employees were of same ethnicity and I was discriminated against. I’M THE NATURAL BORN U.S. CITIZEN my parents learned English so they could work. How is this any different than posting a job listing that said “must be white”? When does America show pride again?

Sorry, but taking a few sememsters of Spanish won't cut it, they want people of that culture!! " Not discrimination" my rear end!! This is an update to response I received for my post dated April, 20th. I received an emailed letter from our Congressman Ted Duetch stating that the U.S. does not have an official national language and so employers have a right to request a specific language if they so choose to when advertising for candidates to fill a position. I totally disagree and expressed my concerns on this matter in my response to him, I also asked him for his assistance in helping me secure a job on the government websites he suggested. This to me is a diversion, but I welcome the opportunity anyways. To date I have not received a follow up response from him. I intend to take this further, we as American citizens voted for politicians to be our voices, in turn they are trying to take away ours, they are willing to give in to others who do not earn the right to oppose to the laws of America simply because they need to protect their seats in office. Well I would like all those who have received negative responses to join me in exposing these so call law makers to the local media first then to cable networks. The media seems to be the voice of the people of America. Thank you

Hi everyone, I’m currently seeking employment have been for awhile. Born and raised in Cali I’m coming accross this problem more than often now. It’s extremely difficult for me to find work. I’m only a English speaker. I’m white. It wasn’t required in my high school years to take another language so I unfortunately didn’t. Without knowing now it would cause me problems. I feel as though people look at me and see me in a negative way just because of my white skin and can’t speak to the others in the work place or the clientele. It’s mainly Mandarin and Spanish. Why is it so difficult for me when I’m born and raised here in the U.S shouldn’t be like that it’s discrimination and prejudice. Other languages now are required for employment. It’s unfair and unethical.

I don't understand how it is legal for employers to make it a requirement to speak Spanish! Seriously, I am a 21-year-old living in Miami, pursuing a bachelor’s in Healthcare Administration. I desperately want to work as a medical assistant or some entry level job. I promise you people, I spend AT LEAST two hours daily to find entry-level positions, and they ALL require SPANISH! This is absolutely ridiculous that I cannot start my career because Hispanics are only willing to help THIER people. I have big goals too, I am a hard-worker too, but how am I supposed to get started when no one is willing to give me even a LOW-PAYING, ENTRY-LEVEL job? After my bachelors, I bet I will still face discrimination, and employers will prefer someone who is bilingual! HAH/ HAH/ HAH. Its funny when I searched the definition of “bilingual” it said, “speaking two or more languages”. I am bilingual too. I speak Urdu, but it’s a minority language, so who gives? When I came to America at the age of 5, I had trouble speaking English. After living in Miami practically all my life, English has become my everyday language, so much that I am uncomfortable speaking my mother language. I adapted to American culture, and I am a very humble person. I don't mind legal immigrants, but why are the Spanish-speaking immigrants taking over America? This is a joke, I swear. Americans are all about suing people for the smallest things. Well, then why am I not able to sue someone for being clearly discriminate towards me? Speaking a certain language is tied to national origin. If I was applying to be a translator, then requiring Spanish is fine. But I am applying for jobs like administrative assistant, bookkeeper, coordinator, etc. These types of jobs don’t require me to speak to “customers” directly! So, this excuse “Sorry, we can’t hire you because you don’t speak Spanish and our customers speak Spanish,” is all BS****. To think that I actually believed that here in America everyone is equal, and that no one gets an advantage over someone else. HAH. To be honest, I want to move to Canada because I feel so left out in America. But then again, everyone wants to move to Canada, and I don’t want Canadians suffering unemployement because of us outsiders constantly coming to their country and taking their jobs. Seriously people, be considerate!

I am writing this in the hope that someone will read and take action. I am a victim of discrimination. I am currently looking for a job, I have over 10 years of experience in the mortgage industry, I was laid off from my last job since last September, 2017. I do not wish to go on government benefits. I am an immigrant that speaks English only. I went on the Bank Of America's website to view listings of job openings and the majority is asking for Spanish speakers. I also studied at North London College, to date it has all been rejection for me as a job seeker in Florida. I am pleading with the lawmakers to take action and enforce the law, this is totally unacceptable and unlawful.

I've gotten 2 emails from you already and it's always the same useless info!! Also Trump I heard your speech this morning on AM radio ALL YOU DO IS TALK TALK TALK ABOUT THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE FOR HISPANICS AND BLACKS!! Do you have the statistics for CAUCASIANS no you keep that under wraps because it's so high!! Of course it's low for them they are the first ones to get the job and the rest of us are thrown to the wolves! These days it only matters to get a job if you speak a language whatever happened to the days of DEGREES and EXPERIENCE?? Trump you are taking the statistics from the unemployment rate you are way off base there are people who are out of work that are NOT collecting unemployment!! So the rate is MUCH HIGHER, like you don't know that I am sleeping in a car and starving because all websites state SPANISH SPEAKING ONLY! No it should state American and let them learn OUR LOVELY LANGUAGE!! Why should I sit in a class room learning Spanish while they sit back and DO NOTHING!! NOT FAIR AT ALL, this has become a horror for the American people, let them see how hard it is the way we have to suffer! What has this world become?? I guess the rate for Americans out of work speaks for itself with these horrendous reviews on this website!! Don't you ever get how we suffer this has to STOP!! I feel like I'm in a foreign land and an outsider!!

All of a sudden my work came to an end I will decide when I am ready to stop working DON'T force me, you should force outsiders to learn ENGLISH!! Show them no life in the US is NOT a dream until you learn English!!Therefore we will NOT have this BIG PROBLEM you have forced upon us NOT FAIR, EQUALITY should be the main character in this situation. I am sick and tired of having to starve I had a job from 1972 all of a sudden I have NO MONEY and HOMELESS!! Every job you see Spanish is a plus really what happened to experience that counts??? NO ENGLISH is a plus, you make these outsiders feel so WANTED IT'S DISGRACEFUL!! Did all of you FORGET Americans should come first worry about your own people first. It's like if you speak Spanish step this way YOU GOT THE JOB, just because of a language very discriminatory . They all think if they come to the US they will get the American dream well I as an american ONLY get NIGHTMARES. I feel like the minority at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to a job!! When is something going to be done to soothe the mind of the Americans for a change. They think they are going to sit back and not learn English but we have to go to school to learn their language I never saw anything so CRUEL to make me starve and be homeless when I am so so willing to work!! This is the biggest problem I have ever seen in all my years from 1972. Thanks for the predicament you put us in!! Just take care of outsiders before your own people other countries help THEIR OWN PEOPLE FIRST!!! They do it the RIGHT WAY not make their own people SUFFER!! This has to be the HARDEST task I ever had to do in my life horrible. They get treated BETTER than Americans and I am sick of it!!

Two Master's degrees (including an MBA), over 20 years of experience with solid referrals and testimonials and I've become unemployable in my 40's because I DON'T speak Spanish here in Miami-Dade (which has caused serious financial strain over the last 2 years, UNNECESSARILY!)???? I literally cannot get service in some mainstream establishments because the Spanish speakers DON'T HAVE TO SPEAK ENGLISH, but yet, for me to get the same job, the requirement is to be 'bilingual, which is CLEARLY CODE, for a preference over Latino workers versus American or any other applicants!!!! RIDICULOUS!!! This makes no sense in basic public safety. If I had an emergency, all of these bound-and-determined-to-not-learn-English speakers would be completely useless in helping me. WHY IS THIS BEING ALLOWED TO HAPPEN?!?!?

To supplement what we all have opinions of. The right to a fair and stable work environment is true and prevelant to this day. Life may not be fair. But this kind of unlawfull activity is unjust and illegal in all areas of the United States. I rarely choose to give my opinion; however in extreme cases where fault lyes within the majority, it needs to be addressed. To put it in financial terms. Companies profit a higher margin of loyalty through obeying the Standard Laws in Existance.

I have been told that i need to speak spanish to have a job in a few warehouses and i have been told that i needed to speak spanish for a security job. Im a southern California native and getting a sustainable full time job here is extremely hard. Yes theres a large racism plea against the uniformed caucasion community. Much like my aproached and Commander n Chief said in 1988. ; Their culture does not respect our American culture while adversely deteriorating the American market with product. But not paying the necessary principle due to the United States. Its becoming a sad state of affairs for all states. Racism is the biggest problem here and is misguiding the unfortunate into a deeper despair. Yes I feel that a class action lawsuit repairing this problem through professional opinions and legislature will procreate a furthering stable environment for all employees.

English as a Second Language classes are free in San Diego, CA. I cannot find a free Spanish class where I live. So what does that tell you? The United States does not care about its own citizens. #AmericansMatter
