I have a Bachelors Degree and am well qualified for the positions I am applying for. However most positions list bilingual desirable. It is disheartening because if anyone who speaks Spanish applies I do not get the job or even an interview, even if my qualifications are much stronger.

Companies need to require that their workers speak English!!! And if they also speak Spanish, that's great!! But to require the job seeker to HAVE to speak spanish is just not fair!!! I just lost a job because i do not speak spanish. I have 25yrs background but they replaced the ad and put MUST SPEAK SPANISH!! So that tells me...that the workers who drive their trucks and work in their warehouse only speak spanish!!! Why dont they REQUIRE those guys to learn English!!! Why is it I have to speak spanish---why cant THEY speak English and Spanish????? It is just beyond crazy!! They would hire a 20yr old person...with no exp at all...NONE instead of me...simply because she speaks spanish!! What are we supposed to do?? Fast food places want you to speak Spanish, English, Mandarin, Korean...it is out of control!!! If I could afford to open my own buisness I would put in bold print ENGLISH SPEAKERS ONLY!! Dont get me wrong...I have lots of friends who speak english and spanish...thats fine for them!! Well...I never learned spanish---I had no interest in that!! I was busy working since I was 16!! Who stops and thinks...."hmmm...I better learn spanish or later on I wont be able to get a job''....NO ONE thinks that!!! Companies need to require THEIR workers to speak ENGLISH!!!! We are all so sick of this! You are reading a job posting on Craigslist or Career builder and you are thinking "wow...I am perfect for this!!" And then blam...at the end...MUST SPEAK SPANISH or CHINESE OR MADARIN....we cant win!!!! These companies are not looking for spanish learned in high school..they want you to read it, write and speak it!!! They want you to have learned spanish while you were a toddler!! I am almost 60!! So I have age working against me and not being bilingual...its sickening!!

You cannot even get a job serving fast food in Texas if you can't speak spanish! tax dollars pay to teach students with ESL but my child doesn't come away fluent in two languages. it makes no sense whatsoever to live in a country where the ILLEGALS have a better chance of getting a job then a citizen.

i dont think there should be any advantage to being able to speak any language that isnt english. it should be a requirement that a person is able to speak english before becoming a citizen. To do otherwise as in the case of mexican spanish is to make the assimilation of illegal aliens into american society easier. a BAD policy . need to rid the country of all those here illegally and then even california will be able to get by without this huge waste of public funds and put the money to a good use serving all citizens(legal, that is).GO TRUMP!

I have read numerous comments on this topic and I totally agree that being "bilingual/spanish speaking" is and should be legal and there should be attorneys out there that will take this before the courts and all these comments need to be addressed to President Trump, because this needs to be part of the illegal immigration issue, instead of spending monies on a wall, increase ICE's budget, because I think if major deportation is put into place, it will hopefully deter anymore illegals crossing the border. A powerful push to get this issue to President Trump, we will at least will be heard and maybe even be addressed publically. We as Americans need to wake up and not tolerate companies only hiring spanish speaking. I am presently unemployed and an undergraduate student pursuing a BS degree in Business, but it is funny to say, I am not required to take a foreign language to graduate and all my classes are taught in English, just as preschool, elementary and high schools. What really effected me the most and enough is enough is today a recuiter called me and said she saw my resume online, and that she was impressed with my training and experience, but then the question was asked "was I bilingual" and I said no. I was told by the recuiter she would contact her client and arrange for an interview and she would call me back. Never received a call back. This is a major major issue in this country. I hope and pray to God that are these comments are read and be sent to the White House and be addressed seriously.

I am a disabled Veteran that can still work, I have a BS and an AS with Human Service concentration. I have been looking for a job for a year! Everything in the Human Service field prefers you to be bilingual. So, I’ve been trying to get in the banking industry, Spanish is still a requirement. We as Americans should not have to speak their language in our Country, they should speak ours! I sign this petition with great honor!

Requiring fluency in Spanish to get or keep a job in the United States violates the race and national origin discriminatory provisions of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Only in some cases can an employer stipulate a fluency requirement. Article link: http://woman.thenest.com/legal-require-fluency-spanish-job-usa-20962.html

Get Rid of the Bi-Lingual Requirement that employers are asking for when hiring applicants. This is America and English is the spoken language. Of course the employer is discriminating against anyone who doesn't speak Spanish for a job, since they clearly mention it in the job announcement vacancies. So if a US Citizen, who only speaks English goes for the job interview...of course he won't get hired or his resume won't get looked at "WHY???? Because he doesn't speak Spanish. So of course this is discriminatory against the American English speaking person. This should not be allowed in the USA. The language of the land is ENGLISH..not SPANISH....So many young college graduates can't get jobs because they are overlooked because of this issue. It doesn't matter if you have the best degrees and experience,....but since you don't speak Spanish...you are not getting the job...HOw Ridiculous and discriminatory is this....we must end this practice by companies. KEEP ON RALLYING TO DO AWAY WITH THIS PRACTICE BY EMPLOYERS

I have the skills to do the job and the only thing that stands in my way is not speaking a language that I DIDN'T know I HAD to speak until I graduated from college and started looking for a job. What is so strange is that all children, even those who speak a non-English language in their home growing up, go to a school and learn math, science, history and many more subjects in English. Yet when you are of working age, you have to speak Spanish? WTF

I just read that the State of California is taking the clothing company Forever 21 to court on behalf of the company's Spanish-speaking employees because they are told they have to speak English while on the job. But yet I had taken the California DMV job test and can't get at job at most of their offices because I don't speak Spanish. So Spanish-speaking people can ask the state employment office to file a lawsuit against any company that tells them they have to speak English but I don't see any lawsuits about people who are English speaking only being denied jobs because they don't speak Spanish, even if the employer is one of California's own agencies.

In case you feel as if you can't say anything or protest this form of language discrimination, think again. We are in no way being racist towards Mexicans or any other race of people who speak Spanish - Colombians, Guatemalans, Hondurans, etc. It would be the same as if Mexico was France or Germany. Would it be OK to force English-only speaking Americans to speak French if France was below us? Not at all. I hear Mexicans say on TV: "We come here for a better life." Wow! Americans can't get jobs to make a better life for themselves because you expect us to speak your language and refuse to learn English while living in America! Employers want to hire people who speak Spanish, and the majority of those speakers are of Latin or Hispanic race and so they are hiring based on race which is discriminatory and illegal.

At all my jobs we speak English because the language of business is English but when I am looking for a job it always says Bilingual Spanish preferred. I live in Miami and I do not speak Spanish and I am not Hispanic. I have the qualifications/experience for so many jobs but sadly I am overlooked. All jobs say EOE and they don't discriminate on race and religion etc. but they do in the language area. Some companies who do business in South America and Latin America require Spanish speakers but most companies just prefer Hispanic/Spanish workers so everyone in the company can converse bilingually. But even within Hispanics they discriminate in regards to which Spanish speaking country they come from. Hispanics also discriminate about color of skin within themselves. In Miami we have Haitians and Brazilians but they all speak perfect English. It is just the way it works here. Unfair but it is my reality.

I work in public health and it's very difficult in the state of California to secure an interview for a job that I am otherwise qualified for. Most positions in the hospitals are list bi-ligual (Spanish) as a requirement. And it shouldn't be a requirement for me to speak a language that isn't my native language in my native country.

I agree with countless of others, the primary language in America, we are all taught english in elementary, high schools and colleges in englishand we can learn about language if one wants to. This requirement is discriminatory and companies should be mandated to follow the law. I hope this petition will make immediate changes.

I am currently looking for a job. I have 20 years of experience. There is no reason I should be having any trouble finding a job. But I am finding an enormous amount of jobs posted that I am 100% qualified for except for the fact that I don't speak Spanish. Not only do I see "Bilingual Preferred" and "Bilingual Required" I see a lot of jobs requiring you to ONLY speak Spanish. Unless the job you are seeking is specifically for translating English/Spanish, requiring an American in the United States of America to speak ANY language other than English should be illegal.
