A woman came into the school office asking if anyone spoke Spanish. Three of us ladies in the office shook our heads "no." And she replied, "Nobody speaks Spanish?!" Are you serious, lady, what country are you living in? Mexico? No. This is the United States and the majority of Americans speak English and were taught English in school, Spanish was always an elective, a choice, not mandatory. How dare she make us feel like we're the problem because she is choosing to live here and not learn English. Luckily, for her the principal showed up who is Mexican and helped her with her concerns. Otherwise, she'd be up a creek. LEARN ENGLISH IN AMERICA FOREIGNERS!!! -

Even in the community where I live, they will only speak Spanish. They curse at you in Spanish if you speak English, and demand you speak Spanish. Liberals are the cause of all this. Diversity means if you're white, you're crap, and you are subhuman.REPORT COMMENTS

I can understand the engineer position but all the other jobs mentioned suchvas nurse, banking, and teaching are require you to communicate with the public which consist of non english speaking and poor english speaking customers and majority of these people just happen to be spanish. If you are nurse providing care to a patient and can't understand anything they're saying how can you care for them when can't understand what they are telling you? Then you'll have to locate someone that can. I understand your frustration but this is now a qualification to be bilingual it's a greater asset to companies.REPORT COMMENTS

I've been turned down for jobs because I don't speak Spanish. I have over 20 yrs on my chosen field. I'm willing to learn Spanish but I haven't the money or time to take a class. Most of the classes available at the community college are during my working hours and the online classes are not that informative. Time is running out for me, my only choice will be to go on welfare and I'm too proud of a person, so maybe death is my only solution if I can't find a job soon.REPORT COMMENTS

I am finding it almost IMPOSSIBLE to get a job because I "NEED TO BE BILINGUAL." For an administrative position or even an entry level job, I cannot get a job. It is LUDICROUS and it IS DISCRIMINATORY. I am highly skilled but never have I found it so difficult. I own a home, I make mortgage payments, car payments, et cetera and I am on the verge of filing for food stamps. As a tax paying American, born and raised here, I find it insulting and extremely unfair.REPORT COMMENTS

Young children who only speak Spanish in their homes are taught English in school here in the U.S. If you only spoke English in your home, you now have to learn Spanish as an adult to get a job? How backwards is that?! We would all be fluent in Spanish if it had been put in place to learn it in schools for the last 40 years due to a rise in Spanish speaking immigrants, but it wasn't and this has come about really fast and speakers of English are not getting employment. Spanish speaking immigrants are refusing to learn English while living in the U.S. And some will say its because they don't have time to go to FREE English classes and raise their families and go to work. Well, well, we English speakers don't have time to learn Spanish, so what's going to happen to us?! I work as a substitute for the local school district and 90 percent of offices all have Mexican women working in there, including the prinicpals, vice principals and counselors. Notice how I said "substitute," I'm not a permanent employee because I don't speak Spanish!!!REPORT COMMENTS

In South Florida 9 out of 10 jobs seek bilingual Spanish employees only. This appears to be a way that most employers use a Spanish requirement as a way to weed out certain groups of people. Spanish requirement is discriminatory in nature because it gives consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a group of people rather than on individual attributes. Spanish speakers receive preferential hiring while excluding other groups of people. This in and of itself is discriminatory. If I meet all of the job requirements plus more, but I don't get the job, yet someone who does not have my qualifications, but they only speak Spanish gets the job. How is this fair? It is very difficult to find a job in South Florida because of this discriminatory practice. It's used in a way to weed out certain groups of people, i.e., black people.REPORT COMMENTS

I feel that if anyone lives in America, and English being the first language, our status when applying for jobs should not require English speaking Americans to cater to foreign nationalities. Whether it be Spanish, French, etc.-this is America, and it wouldn't be allowed in their countries. There are so many Hispanics in my city that are bi-lingual already. How many people does it take to speak spanish on one job! I'm a hard working parent trying to find employment, and most jobs require that you be bi-lingual (Spanish), which is the only language over all other languages that does this. This is a pure racism, and should have been stopped a long time ago. Americans need to work, so when did Spanish overtake English being the native language?REPORT COMMENTS

It should be illegal for it to be a job requirement for employees to speak Spanish. It would be absolutely ludicrous for an English speaker to go to any other country and not assimilate by learning the language of that country. The last time I checked the language of the US is English and it is completely discriminatory for an employer to require Spanish for employment all the while making English only requirements illegal it's absolutely ridiculous.REPORT COMMENTS

It should be against the law to discriminate against people seeking work who do not speak Spanish in the USA. Immigrants have been coming here for 100's of years and they have learned the country's language. So, why is it a problem now? If you in the medical or dental field, the ad's state" spanish speaking required " in the ads. NOW, all the American's in the USA that DO NOT speak this foreign language here will be ruined due to the fact they can not get work. Why aren't they teaching English in K-12. NO, they teach them in spanish making it impossible for them to ever learn the language in this country. English speaking citizens are being pushed out of the united States.REPORT COMMENTS

I have to agree. As an English speaking American citizen at the age of 54, I find it discriminatory that any employer would require my to speak another language. An ad in "jobs" section of my local newspaper states "must be bilingual". How would that work if I was able to speak another language, but it was not Spanish. The ad does not specify what other language.REPORT COMMENTS

I agree. Telling citizens of the US who've grown up in a culture that speaks English primarily, with English-language schools and media... that because the demographics of the country are changing they must learn more and more other languages to fluency is unjust. People need jobs to survive. So we're going to sacrifice the survivability of native-English citizens because their parents, schools, and communities communicate in English? And given how much more prevalent this source of employment discrimination is becoming in the US, it is not a trivial problem.REPORT COMMENTS
