It behooves me, how this government has destroyed a free market by destroying the base price of the horse industry and trashing a $114 Billion dollar a year equine industry back in 2001. Take away the base price of a horse and this economic stimulating industry takes the hit. When the base price was $650/1000# horse, the market place eliminated many equine that were of no use further use. Granted we all have horses that are sentimental which we care for til death due us part, but for the thousands of horses that are mainly livestock without monetary value, where do owners go with them? How do you run an agricultural ranching endeavor when you have no where to eliminate your culls humanely and without waste of protein and receive a value that benefits the remainder of the herd with capital to purchase Feed and Veterinary supplies. The supply of really good performance horses is not cheap to provide the public. They mention an average cost of $2300/year to maintain a horse. This costs stimulates the economy also.Sep 1st, 2011Someone from Beeville, TX signed.

Listen to horse people on this, not to the people who 'love' horses but don't own any, and are not in a horse business.REPORT COMMENTS

Just think about this, we can control what happens to our horses in our country. To many horses are left to fend for them selves, which result in Starving. What is human about that?REPORT COMMENTS

Supervised slaughter under our country's watchful eye is so much more humane than sending them to other countries where we have no control. Please...do this for our horses to insure they are treated humanely.REPORT COMMENTS
