The closing of horse slaughterhouses in the US has created a miriad of problems including devaluing the horse and the entire horse industry. Many of our friends have awakened to find their horse population had increased because of people's inability to care for or lack of desire to keep the animals. What do you do in a situation like that? I realize that many people consider horses pets (1000 + pound) pets very unlike a dog or a cat. (By the way dogs and cats are eaten by some nationalities, even in the US). Horses are generally beautiful animals, however, not all and not every one can control (yes, I said control the animal) they buy. There has to be alternatives to horse rescue locations and even those are stretched beyond their means. Does any anti-slaughter activist have an idea the annual cost to care for a horse? How many do they have in their back yards? Also, have you ever seen a horse euthanized? It really isn't a relaxing pleasant journey as people would have you believe. And who pays for that, plus the cost of having a backhoe dig a hole for burial or removal by the dead animal truck, also, not free. All of this is more than the animal is monetarily worth. People argue about the money that it costs to care for our elderly. What do you think it costs to care for an elderly horse who begins to have problems. If people can't afford to care for a healthy horse, how can they possibly care for a crippled or declining horse. I love horses, always have (don't consider them pets); am involved in the horse industry, believe in humane treatment of any animal but also realize the practicality and necessity of slaughter houses. And how has this affected the BLM and wild horses in this country? If you are truly concerned about horses, look at the reality of what is happening in this country. Our need for slaughter houses is almost essential. Thank you for reading and considering my thoughts.

Please allow horses to be slaughtered in the U.S.--Not only is it better for the horses, it also provides more hay for dairies and other livestock producers to remain competitive.

I raise horses and totally support the reopening of the humane horse slaughter houses. It is vital to the horse industry, we must have somewhere to go with the horses that are old and nonproductive. It makes no sense to force us to feed an animal till it dies on its own that has become a total liability on your business. These animals could be used for meat for our zoos and the pet food industry. Some people say a horse is a companion animal, I say they are livestock, no different than cattle. Years ago people used Oxen to pull waggons and do hard labor just like horses and they are considered livestock.

I love horses deeply and have had horses all my life. I have seen the detrimental effects the ban on slaughter has done to people in the horse industry, myself included. Horses are not better off when they are saved from slaughter only to live in neglect and die after years of pain.

Finally Congress realizes that the closing of processing plants has done more to harm horses than it ever helped. No one loves a horse more than me but the USDA report bared the raw truth.
