I married a women with three kids from her previous relationship and her ex is and has been in prison for 12 years or so. I've been raising his children and now I have a 3 year old and a 6 month old with her and I was told at Family Court that I have to pay child support to her even though we all live together and I pay all the bills because since she has been getting help for the other kids they feel as though she needs help with mines and auotmatically put my kids on her stamps and cash. We tried taking them off and they will not remove them nor stop taking child support from me. Meanwhile they are taking from my whole family beacause they don't give as much as they take.May 22nd, 2013Someone from New York, NY writes:

I am only 17 however I have a clear vision of what this system is, and to sum it up in a phrase: unfairness at its best. My mother has quit 2 jobs now, and is collecting loads of money from governement funding. She refuses to work, and when she does receive money, and this is the significant part, my mom spends it on a combination of cigarettes, alcohol, and methamphetamine, (and my siblings and i also suspect weed however we have no proof for that one yet). To add, she sells either half or more of the food stamps she receives. So, now all of our money is being wasted away on drugs, and she has the audacity to ask for child support, which in essence is non-stoppable. I cry myself to sleep every night, wishing and hoping for a better future for my sisters , and hoping that a good honest man like my father has a way out of this, as his income is extremely low and he gives us what we need. He does the best he can. Whereas my mom, she is on drugs, she uses our home as a "hangout" for her crack head friends, she gives us no allowance, she does not provide us with what we need, and with more money from my father, she will have an open door monthly for more buying of drugs, alcohol, etc. child support was once a system that allowed independent women to take care of her children, now all I see is a causation of a broken home.REPORT COMMENTS

Sometimes the mother is the hard worker, breadwinner, and the father is given custody. This leads me to believe that whoever has the highest net worth has the lowest chance of custody. Why? Is it because family courts are a business and have not a thing to do with justice, fairness, and the safety of the children?REPORT COMMENTS

My husband got into a disagreement with his case worker. Now he has to pay 3 times what he was paying. When he requested another case worker or to speak to a supervisor he was told "I am it buddy think of me as GOD I have all the power and authority. Even to throw your*****in jail". We are about to be evicted, are behind on all our bills, can't afford a lawyer, and can't get any assistance because we make to much money so said...haha! Meanwhile the mother and her boyfriend sit at home all day. Neither one work, they are collecting food stamps and child support while we both work and are being told "guess you need to start looking for a second job". How is this fair?????REPORT COMMENTS

My Husband is a wonderful father to his daughter from a past relationship, he is 100% on board to help support her in anyway he can. He happily pays her child support. The problem in his case is this; 3 years ago he receives a letter from the state naming his as one of the possible fathers of a woman's child she had 6 years ago. He had protected sex with this woman in a one night fling...well, apparently she got pregnant and never said anything until the state forced her to name names because she was asking for state assistance to support her child and herself(she has been in federally funded school for 8 years now!). She apparently slept with 3 men during that period of conception, my husband being one of them. Long story short, he ended up being the father. He was instantly faced with 15,000 dollars of back child support and the state started taking half his income!! There was no warning, he did not know this child even existed, let alone was he given a chance to work out a parenting plan...nope, the state wanted their money and they went after it. Lawyers cost too much when half your income is taken. We are unable to get any kind of loan now, because he has a judgement on his credit that looks like he purposely never paid his child support....I was a single mother for years and I can see both sides of this coin. I never got child support regularly because the ex was a job jumper...I am still owed 20 grand in back support I will never see. I have always felt that it is ultimately my responsibility to provide for my children, not rely on the government to fix my monetary situation. I do not know how the child support system comes up with their numbers...why do they think an 8 year old requires 900 dollars a month to raise?? I do not care how much the father or absent parent makes, it does not take this much a month to have a child. It does if the absent parent is using that money to live off of, but that is the problem, child support should remain CHILD support, not ex support, not get your nails done money, not buy dinner out money, and certainly not buy a new car money!! Something needs to change!!!! I really hope my "little" voice can be heard....My husband used to make a good living, but now half of it is gone and the mother is STILL in school, had another baby and is supported by that babies father as well...she makes more than we do now and she doesn't work or pay taxes!!!! So unfair and unjust! This system has failed.REPORT COMMENTS

I cared for my wife and child for almost 10 years before discovering she had been sleeping around for the last 2. I file for divorce and she demands $800 a mo in child support along with $1200 in alimony. The sad part it good dads like ourselves automatically have to defend ourselves with high priced attorneys, against a system designed to automatically give the women what we ourselves cannot afford. And if you cannot pay them... the state will, and then the state comes after you with interest and penalties. This is a flawed system. What happened to 50/50?REPORT COMMENTS

I've already signed petition last year and check it every now and then. Yet I really don't see this petition and many others going no where. All I've witnessed is the amount of letters and signed petitions increasing, but no change. However, who has the right to tell us how much our child(ren) are worth? Yet we have to get permission by a judge and the non-custodial parent to see our child(ren)? Freaking very foolish! The system only empowers the uncaring custodian parent use the money on them instead of the child(ren), leech off of the government and the caring non-custodial parent. What really tops it off is that when I filed a suit against my ex for threating to leave the state with my child, the judge's ruling was so unjust. We lived together before and after our child was born. Yet, I was the one who clothed, fed, payed both our bills, entertainment and provided a roof our heads. At that time, I was in process of purchasing two homes not at the same time, but one before and after he was born. Something didn't go right on the first one so I postponed on purchasing a house and lost a good amount of the down payment. After he was born, I was in the process of having our house built, but since our relationship began to go south, again, I had to cancel everything. In court, and of course their most proficient tactic was to eventually lie to the judge saying I was never around, and did not support either her or our son. I provided every single document, and witnesses to the judge and the outcome on the judge's ruling was that I didn't have sufficient evidence that I provided. And get this...I was forced to pay back retro pay since the day he set foot on this earth. I was furious and definetly blind sided by the judge's ruling. This only entails that the system is so out of whak, corrupted, illegal, views us as ATMs, and makes us go into debt. This will only drive the caring non-custodial parent be more hate, depressed, and even death. THE CS SUPPORT SYSTEM IS IN VIOLATION OF OUR DUE PROCESS AND JUDGES AND OTHER HIERARCHYS' JUST IGNORE IT BECAUSE THE CS SYSTEM IS THE HIGHEST FUNDED SYSTEM IN GOVRN'T! This needs to be abolished and let us caring non-custodial parents' have the happiness to be fathers' and mothers' to our child(ren) and not make us be slaves just to see our child(ren).REPORT COMMENTS

I've been on both sides of the coin as a single mother, no child support due to disability, and married again to one who paid. Also teaching to unwed moms years ago and also doing divorce ministry and hear ing the stories of many paying child support in the 80s at over a thousand a pop while the ex stays home and children in school and they're forced to live with parents since can't afford to live. Child support not working with parent with disabling accidents and still tacking on support and not working with the person. Full foster care being paid by one person and not the other and not even being told of circumstances and increased payments until after the fact. Suspending a noncustodial parent's driver's license for failure to pay and yet not taking into consideration how they're supposed to see their children especially when the custodial parent wants that relationship for their child. Need I go on... It isn't just about support. . . it is about family and its value of strong relationships to build a whole and happy child. I never stood in the way of my ex's being able to see his children even though he was unable to pay child support while applying for social security benefits. Was it difficult, sure, but my children were just as much my responsibility with changing circumstances. The inequities of this need to be addressed and feel child support should be determined for BOTH sides with the difference between both incomes calculated and minimum wage used if one isn't working. Can you tell I have a passionate opinion on this after 30 years and seeing others struggle???REPORT COMMENTS

No household in America spends 50% to 60% of its total income just to support basic "child needs"; yet a Non-Custodial parent has to? Also, how is it that any arrears accrued by some arbitrary point in the child's past somehow draws "interest", as if the Non-Custodial parent took a government loan out to have a child?.. Yes there are countless questions, like these two, that should never have to be asked in the first place. No one should have their life destroyed just so a bunch of pompous douche bags can claim they are "doing it for the benefit of the children." We are deserve to live even basic, descent lives as human beings without it being taken from us unfairly. Hell all those religious nut jobs stick their nose into the government when it is not supposed to be allowed; well if 10% is good enough for their "god", then it should be good enough to SUPPORT a child, not a lazy Custodial parent.REPORT COMMENTS

I was recently (May 15, 2013) in court to have a temporary order issued that my son be placed with me until his mother return to the state of Wisconsin, and get a place to live. The court shot me down without much conversation and ordered that I pay $506 child support per month, only visit 2 times a month, and did not want to hear my side at all. His mother makes about the money I do, has lived rent free for 18 months, has no bills, and he breastfeeds. He also has a condition that does not allow him to poop. How is $506 per month justified without looking at it a little further and realizing how much that negatively impacts my ability to live, and just gives her more money to sit on or spend on whatever? This is an outrage. I have written one senator, contacted a father's rights organization, and plan to continue this fight as long as it takes to see the right thing done. I started this. I want my son. I want to care for him. I even proposed that if he live with me, she would not have to pay support. But, for some reason (I am a man), I lost immediately, and that is it!REPORT COMMENTS

I am a victim of this. The courts determined that I am 100% responsible, not taking into account the hardships of school loans, car loans, commuting expenses all to get to my job. The mother of my child then moved across the state 300 miles away. I am to pay $900/mo for a single child and travel expenses on top of it, virtually spitting in my face on top of the fact that I am naturally denied access to my entitled visitation because of distance, time, expense, her obligation to school, and my obligation to work.REPORT COMMENTS

My husband pays child support and does much more than what is required by the court. However he is still denied visitation at times and nothing is done about it. This woman has 2 kids by 2 different dads (and trying to get pregnant again by another man), goes to school part time and does not work. She has gone to school for Medical billing, LPN and now RN, all paid for by the government. She just graduated after 8 (yes EIGHT) years in school, she still has no job. Didn't work AT ALL in this time. She, like many others, is a drain on our economy. Some type of law needs to be put into place because it is ufair to ask the father to work, pay child support, pay court costs/fees, pay taxes (but can't claim the child they're supporting) and take care of his own financial responsibilities all while (likely) not recieving any tax returns or assistance for education etc.REPORT COMMENTS

I know someone right now that has tried to ruin a mans life to the point he can't get a job has no wear to live and can't even breath without her breathing down his neck dangling there kids over his head. The only people who believe the system is fair are those who get a big check every month or who have never been in the system and they believe its all for the kids! I pay 1500 per month--to take home that you would have to earn 2200 pre tax! She wants more! Do I get to see my daughter--no she does not abide by the court order so its been a year since I have seen my daughter. Oh yea always somebody who says oh just go to court to change it--yeah I live in another state and take time off work and pay the lawyer $2,000.00 and then she misses the hearing and nothing happens. Again, if you believe the system works and is just you are either an idiot who does not know what you are talking about. Hey--I want custody and can afford it why should somebody who cannot afford to support a child have custody? Why can;t the paying parent have the choice of yes I wlll raise my kid or you know what I don;t like kids I will pay to have it raised? Imputation of inocme in this economy? Bradley amendment useful as economy gets worse? Sorry folks the system will not be fixed until it collapses.
