laxayam (Hello) As Vice Chairman of the Chinook Indian Nation I have had many opportunities to tell our story . Every time I tell people that we are not a Federal Recognized tribe their jaws drop. They tell me that they remember learning about Chinook people in school. We continue our traditional ways and travel by canoe on our traditional highways. I'm part of the third generation that has worked on Chinook Recognition. It saddens me to see us fast losing our elders before they can see Chinook Recognition. You will find that in our surrounding communities there is strong support for Chinook Recognition. It is time for the Chinook People to have the Federal status they deserve.

This is something that needs to be fixed. RESTORE the Chinook Indian Nation and add the families that were left out unfairly.

Greg's family was in the Chinook tribe until the Bush Administration changed that. Apparently his lineage was not recorded in the Church Bible so it was not recognized and they were kicked out of their Native American family. I think the Tribe needs to also rectify this matter as I am sure his family was not the only one denied their rights as Chinook descendants.DNA testing could settle the matter as he knows his family history.

I am a Chinook Indian and a holder of trust land. There are many Chinooks who are owners of trust land. Obviously President Roosevelt recognized us an indigenous tribe in 1934 or he wouldn't have given us our land. My grandfather (born in 1885) took part in tribal affairs as did my mother (born in 1909). I (born in 1940) take an active part in tribal affairs as do my children. My son is a tribal councilman.

This fall I had the amazing opportunity to witness a reconciliation ceremony between the Chinook Tribe and the Clark Family of Lewis and Clark fame. The expedition in 1804, stole the Chinook's most important canoe. The Clark righted that wrong, and replaced that canoe in September of this year - seven generations later. Now the US Government has a chance to right a wrong, and restore the Chinook's back to a

Most people in Washington State are shocked to learn the Chinook are not federally recognized. Why? Because everyone in this region recognizes them as the original and ongoing occupants of this place. The way that the government continues to stonewall Chinook efforts at recognition only perpetuates the historic injustice of uncounted numbers of broken promises.
