I am now 60 years old and would very much like to see our tribe become recognized Federally. My mother passed away in 1975 at the age of 49 from cancer. She was 1/2 Chinook, Wahkiakum band. If anything she is looking down on us all and hoping this would happen for her three boys.Dec 8th, 2011Someone from Lynnwood, WA signed.

With about 2900 members enrolled, it's rather silly that the government says this tribe 'dosen't exist' - did anyone read the news paper in September? Quite a historical event with the Clark family returning a canoe to a people that 'don't exist'REPORT COMMENTS

When the US Lewis and Clark scientific expedition descended the Lower Columbia River the were hosted through a harsh winter by the generosity of the populous Chinook Indian communities. As they left on the return home the were short one canoe and literally stole a Chinook dug out canoe and fled upriver--a criminal act under U.S. military laws of conduct..... The descendants of Lewis and Clark families very recently commissioned the construction of a Chinook dugout canoe and gave it back to the tribe to correct a wrong by their family and outright theft by a formal U.S. military expedition--Now it is high time for the U.S. to recognize the Chinook and correct 200 years of missteps and finally initiate an official nation to nation relationship.REPORT COMMENTS
