I was very lucky that my employer allowed me to take a six week leave and use accrued sick days so that my income continued. I would not have been able to navigate those early days and work full time. Every grieving widow or widower should have the chance to take some time to heal as well as deal with the many arrangements that they face.May 18th, 2012Someone from Los Angeles, CA signed.

I was not working when I lost my spouse, but even when I did try to go back to work months later it was still so difficult and I was unable to do it. I cannot imagine how working spouses manage to work productively again just three days after their loss. The two greatest losses we can suffer is those that we gave birth to AND those whom we've said our vows to. FMLA should cover both.REPORT COMMENTS

Protection under the FMLA upon the death of a spouse or child just makes sense. I used all leave accrued upon the deaths of each of my parents given all the arrangements that had to be made. Thank goodness I had FMLA in place when I was providing actual caregiving. Had I not become an independent contractor, I would have surely lost my job upon the sudden death of my husband. FMLA guarantees employee retention and provides an adequate period for a more stable employee to return to work. Please give this additional provision serious consideration. Thank you.REPORT COMMENTS

Grieving the loss of a spouse impacts a person physically, emotionally and mentally. After three days a person still hasn't even grasped the fact that their spouse isn't coming home, let alone processed the immediate changes that take place in the aftermath of this kind of death. Please recognize the impact that death has on a spouse or parent by allowing up to six weeks unpaid leave for people who grieve these kinds of losses.REPORT COMMENTS

I too was offered 3 days bereavement when my spouse passed away suddenly of a heart attack. In 3 days I had not even had the funeral service yet, but was expected to return to work. I suffer PTSD and panic attacks since finding my spouse not breathing; these conditions make it extremely difficult to concentrate enough to work, or to even safely drive myself to the office. I fail to understand how this is not considered a debilitating condition subject to FMLA leave.REPORT COMMENTS

I had to go back to work right after my husband died. It was the hardest thing to do. I am a mother of two young boys and I could only wish I had time to be with them.REPORT COMMENTS
