I was 40 years old and self-employed as a psychotherapist when my husband died. I had been taking care of him as he died of cancer, so I had very few clients left once he died. I was in no shape to see new clients, nor did I care whether my private practice thrived or not at that point. It took me many months before I could return to seeing even a handful of clients each week. Being widowed so young was a devastating experience for me.May 19th, 2012Someone from Dublin, OH writes:
I lost my fiance, so I hope that one day FMLA could include that type of loss as well.REPORT COMMENTS

This is so needed. I have lost both a child and a spouse and I would rank the loss of my spouse #1. My life as I knew it is over.REPORT COMMENTS

In 2011 my husband passed away in his sleep at the age of 49. Our twin boys were not of school age at the time of his passing. I lost his income and then my own income as a result of his passing. I had no choice but to stay home with our twin babies. The first year we were in survival mode. I don't know how we survived with no family in the area to assist. If I had been able to take bereavement time off from work I might have been able to apply for child care assistance and plan the funeral services for my husband. I lost my world. The love of my life, a job I cared about, the father of my children, our incomes and health insurance. I concentrated on simply taking care of our twins. I was unable to plan or attend a funeral. I have yet to scatter his ashes per his request. The bereavement act would help so many widow/widowers and their families during this heartbreaking time. Think of the children who suffer the loss of one parent. They need the other parent to comfort them and help them during this time. Not lose both parents, one to death and one to absence due to work at the same time. The families need time to adjust.REPORT COMMENTS
