September 14, 2007 I lost my husband Firefighter Kelly L. Page in a line of duty death. I was exceptionally lucky that my school system allowed me whatever time I need, which I only took 3 weeks of because my students needed me also, to heal and take care of my family. I had to find my way through the maze that occurs after the death of a spouse. I had to buy a cemetery plot and plan a funeral, find my way through the paperwork and financial obligations we are left with, and seek legal advice regarding the future of my 3 children. I was numb for weeks, working on auto pilot. If I had been forced back to work within 3 days, my family would not have been able to carry on and heal. My 3 girls are now 18, 15, and 9. We still grieve everyday. It is a long term situation we have to deal with. If men can take leave to help their wives after a birth or adoption, I think we need to make sure that same coverage is available if they find themselves without a husband or wife.May 20th, 2012Someone from Tappahannock, VA writes:
Within a few years time I have lost my Mother, Father, Husband and Sister taking 3-5 days off for each loss. Returning to work that early in a zombie state holding it together only brought a total meltdown and sobbing fits.REPORT COMMENTS

I lost my husband at 55, my whole world crumbled. If you are one when married, you have lost half of yourself. I didn't understand all the paper work that needed done in a timely manner. You are alone, the grief is unbearable. The loss of a child is horrible, but you continue to have your spouse to hold on to each other and do not have all this paper work you do not understand. while continue in shock. I am also petitioning that congress allow FMLA leave to grieve the loss of a spouse. Phyllis A. LordREPORT COMMENTS

I became a widow at 27 with 2 children, 8 & 5, my world was shattered! We were married for 9 years, together for 12. Thank goodness I worked for an amazing company that told me I could take as much time as possible and payed for my husbands funeral. He didn't have life insurance so I was screwed until the Home Depot and my coworkers stepped in and helped, I am forever grateful for the HD and the employees that were there to support me.REPORT COMMENTS

For two years, I cared for my husband who had angiosarcoma, a rare and aggressive blood vessel cancer. He was on hospice for three months before dying. I'm coming up on the one-year anniversary, and can't fathom having had only 3 days off from a job. That's inhumane.REPORT COMMENTS

IMAGINE if this happened to you. What would you do if your company didn't allow you more than 3 days, 4 days or even 5 days? How could that possibly be enough for your spouse or your child? This is so needed!REPORT COMMENTS
