This should have been under FMLA years ago.

I lost my husband suddenly @ age 47 , leaving me with 2 kids 15 & 11. As a child i lost my mother @ age 11. I grew up with no supervision. When my husband died suddenly i had 2 leave my job because i needed to pick up the pieces & take care of my kids. My employer didnt want to know anything about it period..However when i was ready to go back no one wanted to know or care about why there was a lapse in employment. .....

I agree with Melinda. I didn't work before my husband's death. But, I know it takes longer than 3 days to grieve the death of a spouse. It took 5 days just to make funeral arrangements for my husband! I support this petition completely.

Everyone is different: Returning to work a week after the loss of my son was a welcome distraction from my grief but for others it may be utterly intolerable. We should all have the choice.

I lost my husband on July 13, 2011, when he had a very sudden heart attack at only 46. I was only 39. Going back to work was the least of my concerns, as in those first few weeks and even months, I could barely even hold myself together, eat, sleep, or function. I also lost my health insurance when he died, and we had no life insurance since neither of us expected this to happen. People should be given ample time to grieve, and just to figure out how to get up in the morning again, and breathe. My first few months back at work were terribly hard, and now, 10months later, Im still having a rough time being "on" and positive to teach my classes. Your life changes in an instant. We shouldnt be expected to just go on as if things are the same. Thank you.

I had to return to work just to keep my health insurance 3 weeks after my husband passed away. We need to have the opportunity to grieve and help our children grieve without worrying about our job.

FMLA to grieve the death of your spouse should be paid leave and covered under FMLA

It is disgraceful not to include this in FMLA. Also, I believe FMLA should extend to all employers. Not just those with 50+ employees.

Between hospital stays, home hospice care and bereavement I was out of the office for between 5 and 6 weeks when I lost my wife 8 months ago at the age of 34. I am fortunate I had an understanding employer, but I still think I may have gone back too soon and can't imagine how much worse this would have been if I had to rush back even sooner.
