I work as a Department of Army Police Officer, and just tonight, I responded to a call, possible domestic in progress. Throughout our investigation, a handgun was discovered in the residence. In MY state, this guy would be arrested, charged with 2 felonies and either incarcerated or immediately arraigned. Instead, what *I* have to do, is secure the handgun, charge the guy with ONLY UCMJ charges, and immediately turn him over to his unit, ASKING them not to allow him to return to his home. Let's be honest people, it's ABOUT TIME this changed and allow the DoD police and all officers under the DoD to provide the proper services to the communities which they serve! Give the ability of statutory powers of ARREST, making it obvious and clear that it's NOT ok to have people commit crimes and just get released. Do the RIGHT thing, put this through and make it law!! -

Ive worked for the federal system myself and experienced the same set backs. Its the reason why I left. If your going to wear a badge with police on it then you need to be able to do your job appropriately.REPORT COMMENTS

Look at the Ft. Hood Shooting as well as other incidents involving DOD Police Officers. The personnel we deal with on a day to day basis have more training then the average citizen on the city streets. Not only are they trained in firearms, knives, swords as well as hand to hand close quarters combat.REPORT COMMENTS

DOD/ Federal Officers face the same element of threat as any other law enforcement officer, with one additonal component: the people we deal with on a daily basis often have significant military and combat training. This becomes an issue when a person we may have apprehended is kicked out of the military. This makes us a target, as well being a potential target for terrorism. Please give us the ability to protect ourselves and our families. If Fort Hood taught us anything, it taught us one thing: anything can happen anywhere.REPORT COMMENTS

We put our life on the line every day, just like our brother and sister officers in the public sector, but we are treated with indifference and not given our due. It is time to recognize DOD Officers as the Sworn Police Officers that we are and place us on the same level as our civilian counterparts.REPORT COMMENTS

I am in support of H.R. 324 for one reason and one reason only, "All DOD Police Officer's share the same burden as a local civilian law enforcement agency; they protect and serve." PLEASE let us do the job we were trained to do and ease the burden on local law enforcement officers responding to our calls and handling our cases.REPORT COMMENTS
