I was just released from prison two months ago for a burglary of habitation charge that occured in 2004. Since I've been out, I've been refused work by companies of various sorts even while getting assistance with government agencies (Project RIO and Texas Workforce Commission) that are supposed to help ex-offenders. To top it off, I've been denied the right to participate in college programs (Medical Laboratory Technician and Diagnostic Medical Sonography) and pursue a career that I'm very interested in due to my irrational decisions that I made in the PAST. I graduated high school as valedictorian and with honors. I also have a 4.0 average for the 42 college credit hours that I took while incarcerated. Why am I being discriminated against?

This is good because my son is now suffering from the bad decisions he made as a teenager. Teens don't think about this when they are just trying to have a good time. He did his time and paid his debt to society, stop the continuing punishment.

This is such a horrible sentence to live down. My son has been looking a job any job for over 4 years. As soon as they run background on a crime in 2001 that was probation sentence only...he's done. There must be some way for non-violent felons to get their life back. I cry and pray each nite that he will find something.

My husband is a nonviolent offender and was convicted of a burg. of habitation 2nd degree felony charge when he was 17, he was not even present for the burglary, nor did he commit any sorts of crime besides the fact of standing outside during the middle of the day not knowing what was going on until after the fact. He did nothing wrong besides "trying to do the right thing" and telling the authorities what happened when he found out. He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Thanks to that now he is being punished although he served his time to society, and only wants to do right by his family, me, and society. He is turned down for every job he try's for. The goverment states there is assistance for offenders to re-enter into society... What help is there as long as companies are permitted to discriminate against people just because of their background? How are people able to move on with their lives and be functioning members of society when they arn't even able to support themselves due to the fact of your laws and restrictions? Everyone deserves a second chance, is that not what this country was founded on and why the constituition was put in place for? Please pass the H.R. 1529, for the sake of allowing millions of people across the country to live the life.

I know nonviolent felons. They were punished and completed their court requirements. They are educated and learned people from all walks of life. There illness is addiction to alcohol and/or drugs. It is recognized by the American Medical Association. They have straightened out their lives and should not have to pay a life time penalty. Please adjust these laws - they are US Citizens! No one is above a mistake.

I had a DUI Felony, and no longer drink after causing so much pain to myself and family. I am in recovery, and found out full well I have a disease and can never put alcohol in my body. I am a degreed professional who cannot find a job! Please please pass HR 1529 to allow us non-violent offenders who have paid our debts not to be punished by withholding jobs from us, as that is what is happening with all of us out here!!!

I committed a felony when I was 18 years old and to this day this immature juvenile mistake has haunted me. I am 24 years old and have a six year old daughter and a child to be born in November 2010. Not only can I not care for myself, I cannot provide for my family. I served my jail time and fully completed my probation why must me and my family suffer from me joyriding on a motorbike that a group of kids from the neighborhood had stolen from someone. They don't let you buy liquor before the age of 21 because they say that your not old enough to make that decision, but yet there is a permanent (lifetime) punishment for a petty crime. There was no forcible taking of the bike, there was no property damage to the bike or the law enforcement that conducted the traffic stop. I'm fully apologetic and respect the law enforcement agencies and the laws of this great country. I just want my life back. Not just for me but for my two children that will have to suffer in their early years of life because of a mistake that I made in 2003.

If a person had made a bad choice while they were young should they still be harassed by police and also not be able to obtain a job and they can not support themselves as a result.

Why should federal crimes be pardoned? Because they are educated, upper crust criminals? Why should a felony be forgiven and not a misdemeanor? Misdemeanors can alter ones life as well. And why do people keep saying "non-violent" offender? Is a violent crime any less forgiveable? Not everyone convicted of a "violent" crime is categorized as a sex offender, rapist, murderer, child molester...ad infinitum. Sometimes it's as simple as a mutual altercation, w/ few witnesses. We have an imperfect system- this is true, but no 'one' group is more deserving of a second chance than any other. What we need to start doing is realizing that most people will break the law at some point in their lives- and that being the case, temper justice with good sense and an understanding of the human condition. The unnecessary and continual persecution of citizens, that have paid their debt to society, only serves to divide our country and breed descent. There has got to be a better way.
