I have done everything right as a patient, and demonstrated repeatedly that I am not abusing my meds. I have no criminal history or any of addiction. I am tired of my prescriptions being questioned, and more often than not, unnecessarily delayed. It is inhumane and un-American to treat patients as "guilty until proven innocent." It must stop. -

Stop targeting our pain physicians because they prescribe us our medication or should I say used to as many are being drastically cut or doctors are abandoning their patients by closing up shop for fear of becoming the next DEA target. Go after the drug cartels that you know are bringing in the drugs and stop the war on our great doctors that are already afraid to treat us anymore with the medication we need.REPORT COMMENTS

I suffer from RSD (reflex sympathetic dystrophy)it causes 24/7 chronic pain wth almost daily periods of exacerbation. At one point I was ready to commit suicide. I am on pain patches and opioid pills for breakthrough pain. I have 1 or 2 days a week where I do not need any pills or maybe 2. My last visit in Nov 2015 my doctor said he was concerned about my pain meds as I age. I reminded him I voluntarily reduced the meds 3 yrs ago and I have NEVER abused my meds. Before I got pain management I really considered suicide because I could not engage with family or friends. I stayed in a dark room, just gritting teeth, curling my toes, pushing my hands into the bed. It was NOT living. I am not a druggie, I am fully alert, volunteer, engage with all, tend my yard, feeding the birds, and feel well enough to want to live. This war on opioid should not be this 73 year old woman who has never given my doctor reason to withhold or withdraw the only treatment for this disorder. Don't punish my doctor for treating a disorder with no other treatment and send me to a dark room again or gone.REPORT COMMENTS

I have a severe degenerative spine disease. I have been on pain meds a long.time and was doing fairly well until I.moved to Texas. Now my quality of life and health have plummeted and I have ended up in a methadone clinic because the doctors in DFW are afraid to my pain. I was.actually able.to go work out before moving here, but apparantly my quality of life doesn't matter anymore, just as long as the totalitarian go ernments line is towed my the doctors. I hope all the people responsible for this "war" have chronic pain coming soon. Karma is coming around soon.REPORT COMMENTS

No, CancelAug 3rd, 2016Someone from De Soto, KS writes:
This current heroin epidemic is unfortunate and winds up impacting legitimate, chronic pain patients. Since legal opiates are viewed as a gateway drug to heroin by the government, everything in relation to those medicines is in a crackdown mode. What's happening to legitimate, non-abusing chronic pain patients is what is criminal. If one can find a doctor to believe they are in pain and they prescribe an opiod medicine, the patient must now jump through hoops to get the medicine filled. These prescriptions can no longer be called in- the patient must physically carry the script from the doctor to the pharmacy. Now many pharmacies are "out" of these medicines and must order them. But the prescription cannot be given out early - so you'll wind up with a gap in getting your meds. Of course, this is only if you are feeling well enough to run all of these errands. And, of course, this is only if you can find a doctor to prescribe. There needs to be a way to distinguish legitimate pain sufferers from those who just want to get high. This unequivocally needs to be done so that those suffering from chronic pain conditions can get some relief. Many people would agree to take less meds, I'm guessing in order to feel relief some of the time. This is an area where doctors just simply can't have their hands tied.REPORT COMMENTS

I live in a "Nanny" state,"The DemoKrapic Peoples Republik Of Kalifornia", where the State government and Governor "Moonbeam" Brown, who wrote that "he {Brown} believed it would be a comfort to have this option if he were 'dying in prolonged & excruciating pain' signed the "End of Life Option Act" into law for people who are terminally ill (with cancer or other _fatal illnesses_ ONLY), may request a Rx for lethal medication so they can die at their option. This option is, of course, voluntary for their doctor to provide access to the lethal medication(s), nor do they have to refer the patient to someone that will provide it. This option is ONLY available to persons who are terminal, and NOT available to someone who is _only_ enduring excruciating, intractable pain! So now chronic pain patients in Kalifornia are getting "double pummeled" by both Government & the medical "profession" since pain patients are being denied pain medications _and_ if the pain is intollerable, cannot "legally" suicide! The phrase "First Do No Harm" should be changed to "First cover your ass!". My HMO had a TV ad that stated "Kaiser physicians are free to practice medicine as _they_ see fit, not as a committee dictates!" It ran for a couple of times, then they pulled it when the CDC (Sieg Heil DEA!) "dictated" policy on treatment of dope addicts, oops!, I mean chronic pain patients and "ONLY suggested" the maximum allowable daily medication doseages. Yeah right! HAHAHAHAHAHA! KMA CDC & DEA! Enjoy & DENY the reason for the upcoming increase of suicides.REPORT COMMENTS

So thanks so much you stupid dumb-ass Rob Portman as I guess you must not suffer from any pain. The good thing is at least our family have four properties which we will be selling and moving not only out of this state but out of this country where we can be prescribed without Dicks like you playing God with our lives. We are so watched by the Government on everything! Now they want us to live in pain! I hate the way this country is now! And it's just going to get worse! We law abiding christen citizens of the United States have to live in pain, because the Government is sticking there nose into Doctors rights!! All because they either really care about all the Druggies and stupid people that overdose on narcotics! Or there trying to make money on all this supposedly wanting people in true pain to go to nutrition, acupuncture, physical therapy and so on to take care of their pain, which most of us have already been there and done that!! The USA is not a Communist County! But it's looking that way!! We people need to stand together and do something about this treatment from our Government!!!!REPORT COMMENTS

EMAIL LETTER I RECEIVED FROM MY CONGRESSMAN HERE IN MISSOURI.... BLAINE LUETKEMEYER MEMBER OF CONGRESS 3rd District, Missouri http://luetkemeyer.house.gov www.facebook.com/BlaineLuetkemeyer www.twitter.com/RepBlainePress COMMITTEE ON FINANCIAL SERVICES Housing and Insurance Chairman Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit COMMITTEE ON SMALL BUSINESS August 2, 2016 Mrs. Michele R. Dear Mrs. R. Thank you for contacting me regarding chronic pain and opioid controlled prescription drugs (CPDs). I appreciate your views on this important issue and welcome the opportunity to respond. Our country is truly at a crossroads as addiction to prescription painkillers, heroin, and other forms of opioids has increased at an alarming rate in recent years. We must decide whether to act now and prevent the loss of more American lives, or continue down the same path and allow this epidemic to promulgate further. While opioid CPDs play a vital role in treating patients with acute and chronic pain, the number of these prescriptions has significantly increased in recent years. In 2012, 260 million opioid prescriptions were written in the U.S., outpacing the number of American adults by 20 million. Unfortunately, the increasing number of prescribed opioids has had a direct correlation to the rise of drug overdoses in the United States. Drug overdose has become the leading cause of injury death in the United States, surpassing the number of deaths by firearms and motor vehicles. More specifically, deaths attributed to opioid CPDs have outpaced those for cocaine and heroin combined. It is clear that more must be done to provide proper care to those in need, but also properly address this epidemic. Accordingly, my colleagues and I in the House recently passed the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA). This legislation would create a Pain Management Best Practices Interagency Task Force consisting of representatives from federal agencies, state medical boards, health care professionals, experts from both the pain and addiction recovery communities, and chronic pain patient representatives. This diverse group would be charged with reviewing and potentially updating the best practices for acute and chronic pain management. Earlier this year, the Senate overwhelmingly passed its own version of CARA. Accordingly, a Conference Committee comprising of Members from both chambers are now reviewing the differences between the bills to determine one uniform path forward. Please know I will continue to monitor the progress of this legislation, and will keep your thoughts in mind should it reach the House floor for a vote. Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. If I can be of any further assistance in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me or visit my Web site at http://luetkemeyer.house.gov. Thirteen years ago, through no fault of my own, I began taking opiate pain medication for unrelenting chronic pain. I've witnessed the changes over the years for pain management clinics. For those of us living in this nightmare, we need help. Chronic pain has changed my life for the worse. Don't take away the opiate pain meds until something safer can be given. More research is needed, more options for those of us who depend on something to make the pain more manageable. There is a BIG difference between dependence and addiction.REPORT COMMENTS
