Due to the new guidelines and regulations and the scare doctors feel of treating any one with pain medications, the doctor systems in this area have decided they will not under any circumstances continue to treat anyone with chronic pain. They just say - you will have to find someone else. However, in a small town where I live, all of the doctors work under the same University system for a radius of 45 miles. Too far for any outside doctor to properly monitor so they too refuse to take on the pain management. So my 32 year old son who has been treated for his intractable pain will not longer be able to be treated. He has never failed a monitoring test or taken medication other than how it was prescribed. He works for a chiropractor and has a very pleasant personality and is well liked and thought of. This will change when he is no longer treated. He will go backward to when his pain first began when he was not being properly treated. Before the doctors finally realized his pain was intractable, he was home bound and walked with a cane when he did leave the house. Please be more careful to those you listen to when legislating laws. Some people have a very different agenda and truth gets twisted. This will not help the drug epidemic, but it will negatively impact many lives who relay on opiods for quality of life. -

I dont know what life is without pain. I dont know life outside my bed. I dont have a life. I watch my childrens pain because im miserable and cant be fixed. Since doctors cant be doctors and patients have no dignity because our chronic pain doctors in Alabama are forced to do harm because you the government seems to know whats best, you will not have a living breathing voting citizen anymore. I will find a dignified way to end my miserable pain inflicted life. Since you know better for me than my doctor does I can only pray karma hits you right back. And someway you come to know my side of the fight. Im looking for a dr kavrochian now instead of relief or a cure.REPORT COMMENTS

I've had 4 lower back surgeries since 2002, I was told in 2007 that because of sever nerve damage and scare tissue I could not have any more surgeries. That I would suffer from chronic back pain the rest of my life, and would be on pain meds the rest of my life. The Docs. finally found what worked for me my quality of life was good my pain was tolerable. Now they are taking me off the meds my pain is intolerable and I'm in bed most days. No more family functions or nothing. Without family & friends what else have you got?REPORT COMMENTS

The goverment has caused an epidemic trying to stop another.. My life has halted into almost nothing. My sons suffer right along with me. Not learning and exercising as they should because mom, who used to work 60 or more hours a week is now stuck in bed. In agony. Doctors broke their mom and wont help. I even died. Bled internally for 3 days with a collapsed lung. While in the hospital. Who do you call when your dying in the hospital? You to call nine-one-one? I tried it doesn't work. All because some nurse thought I was addicted to morphine. The button wasn't working because I was bleeding. BeforBeforehand stuck a chest tube in and I wwatced my blood cover the entire floor. They didn't fix the leak though so I ran out of blood eventually. I did wake up on life support thought I was in hell. Because a doctor who doesn't normally work there decided to rip my chest open anopen and revive me. Now I suffer from chronic pain every single day every single second and I can't get medicine because doctors get in trouble. What do I do? Goverment what do I do?REPORT COMMENTS

Without my pain medicine i can not move. I suffer from RA and it does not get me high at all it helps me move and walk. And i believe taking pain meds away from the people who really need it is going to cause a lot of people to seek else where or commit suicide. We did not ask for this disease it chose us no one wants to walk around 24/7 365 day a year in pain. If i had a choose i would not want to take anything and have a pain free live.I have to take biologics and the side affects from them can kill you they can cause cancer along with many other side effects.Ra is no joke not only does it attacks the joints but also your organs as well but it normal effects your heart or lungs first. My Dad died at the age of 51 because the RA attacks his lungs, And you want to take what quality we have left by not giving something to help with the pain as Ra not just kills you but cripples you to the point you are bed ridden and are in a wheelchair. I do not think it is up to the government to decide what people get doctors should that is what they went to school for. And if you think stopping pain meds is going to make people stop over dosing you are wrong. The drugs will always be on the streets. And people will turn to that and we all know that god only knows what is in the drugs off the streets. People like me go to our doctors to get the right medicine and not something of the street that will kill us. Wake up government you need to stop controlling the doctors. Start by controlling the drugs on the street first that is the major problem not the doctors or the people who suffer in unbearable pain every day 24/7. Enough is Enough with the government stepping in where they do not belong or understand some of the diesases out there and what is does to the human body not just physically but mentally also. Let the doctors decide what is right for there patients. The media should talk to some of the doctors and maybe people would understand. And the media should be exposing the drugs on the street and stop worrying about what doctors do. We live in a world where you are attacking the wrong people once again.REPORT COMMENTS

When I asked to see the doctor, he came in and I had to remind him of my medical history and that I was not a candidate for stimulators and pumps. He too cited media hype and that I may get into a car accident. I am 50 and have not had a car accident. This is solely motivated by his desire to protect himself with no thought whatsoever to me, the patient. Why after 3 years? They also ask for my urine every time, even in interim appointments. In the last 30 days I gave 3 urine specimens. Who is paying for this and why? I am a disabled patient who also suffers from anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder. I have recently tried to return to work, yet he was not swayed by the fact the reduction he made will make me feel more pain and physically bad. He did not even taper as you would one being taken off opioids. He refused to see me today and said that his was the plan. I have no idea what is going to happen next month. Detox? I am a young mother 29, my life is becoming miserable thanks to the new laws. I have endometriosis and pcos. I weigh 89 pounds I love my children but child birth was terrible on my body. My female internal organs where no longer where they should be it was constant pain I had everything removed except one ovary, it was done to control bleeding and infections. My vaginal wall prolapsed and I developed endometriosis on the scar tissue. Further surgeries will just make things worse I'll have more scar tissue, during the last surgery my bladder was bumped and my nerves quit working they are dead my bladder doesn't get the signals it needs so I have to use catheters even with all the new catheters it is extremely painful. I have epilepsy and I get chronic migraines from it. I have very bad GI problems I get sores in my throat, my lower back always hurts. I have a heart condition and I get low blood pressure my legs have nerve damage all night long they burn, ache, and tingle. I have osteoporosis a fall from a seizure or blood pressure attack causes pain for months. My knee is missing a lot of cartilage due to a car accident when I was 17. I know those that get addicted to pain meds from short term use abuse them and they are criminals not us. I was on a prescription for 3 months after my car wreck when I was 17, I quit them without a problem. I went through a lot before I would go on meds 1 yr ago I got down to 78 pounds I couldn't do anything but cry and throw up. I spent 3 days in the ICU when my electrolytes went crazy from being unable to eat or sleep. I shouldn't have to get a feeding tube when a pain pill can make the sores in my throat bearable. I quit cathing like I was supposed to I would only do it when my stomach swelled up to the point I couldn't wear clothes a painpill 30 minutes before makes it bearable. I shouldn't have to keep an indwelling catheter that can be pulled out during a seizure or playing with my children. My heart rate was staying so high from pain I was passing out I kept losing more and more weight which lead to osteoporosis. I'm allergic to NSAIDS. Shots didn't work for me I tried, also NSAIDS are not meant to be taken for a continuous amount of time and can cause bleeding. My heart rate is dangerously high already but it's hard to treat because the condition I have causes low blood pressure my heart rate was staying in the 160s due to pain. My heart problem is bad enough without being made worse by pain. I had no choice but to go to pain management my dr and several others told me it was the best option so I could function, sleep , eat, and be there for my kids if you can't sleep or eat you can't fight infection. My dr wanted to help but I was forced to go to pain management my husband has had to call in to work because we are always there so long he has the only income I can't legally drive due to epilepsy so when we're there for hrs he can't go to work. I missed one appointment I see 7 drs now because I have to go theREPORT COMMENTS

There IS a VERY BIG DIFFERENCE between patients who take opioid medicines respondibly in order to keep working & care for their families while keeping others at least somewhat comfortable from the agonizing pain that accompanies many many diseases as opposed to addicts who use these medications purely to get high! What so many in Government is failing to see is YOU ARE NOW CREATING TWO VERY REAL EPIDEMICS: 1. Chronic pain patients will start going to "the streets" out of sheer desperation to find relief for otherwise crippling, debilitating pain! 2. The patient's who will not consider illegal drugs as an option, will have two remaining choices for relief, alcohol or suicide! Anyone who has not had to endure true, severe, constant, chronic pain simply cannot imagine this insurmountable challenge! Severe chronic pain is one of the most maddening things I have ever had the misfortune of experiencing. There is NO RELIEF...IT'S CONSTANTLY ATTACKING YOU, YOU CANNOT SLEEP, YOU CANNOT FUNCTION, IT SLOWLY CONTINUES BREAKING YOU DOWN BECAUSE IT NEVER GOES AWAY! ! I understand how it can "drive" patients to the heartbreaking decisions of suicide, drugs or alcohol. The Government has created a VERY DANGEROUS situation in taking available, proven, FDA cleared options away from patients & physicians! The stories are already starting to surface, like the Florida woman being dragged out of a ER in handcuffs accused of drug seeking only to drop dead in the parking lot! Two chronic pain patient bloggers that both suffered massive strokes & died because they had been abruptly and totally cut off of their life changing opioid medications! Unfortunately, these are only a fee of many heartbreaking stories. I truly can't even find an appropriate word/phrase to encompass what this is doing to the entire pain community and their families! I hope with all my heart that Officials & Government soon see that THIS IS NOT THE WAY to control illegal drugs, to help people with abuse issues or the chronic pain patients who really need these medications!!REPORT COMMENTS

I understand some people abuse the drug and take too much and their life is worse because of that. I understand that kids or others may steal perscriptions. I have been using Fentanyl Patches for over ten years. In that time I have never exceeded the dosage, nor has any else taken my patches. So why am I punished because of what others do??? How am I punished? Kaiser has decided that it needs to cut down on pain meds. Because of this they won't increase my dosage. So while it helps, it could help more. How am I punished? I am in pain so I rarely go outside to drive someplace. Yet every month I must drive to the pharmacy to get this drug. Half the time I have to lay down in my car after I get there because of the pain. And don't forget you only get 30 days worth. So if you get distracted and are late a day, you suffer withdrawal. Or if a patch falls off, you suffer. I also have to visit the doctor more often just to tell him I am still in pain. More than ten years... Wait there is more. Kaiser has decided not to trust patients, so now I have to take a urine test. Another trip out of the house. But the big problem happens when my test shows no Fentanyl. Keep in mind I have been on Fentanyl for over ten years, every single hour of the day. And now this test says I am not taking it. Doctor wants to test again. The test doesn't work, so why repeat it?!? Why? Because many doctors will stop prescribing it, since they think you are lying and you are not using the patches. So no more fentanyl, I end up in even more pain. I am already suicidal. In my case this is to fix a problem that doesn't exist. BTW, do some research and you can find a lot of things that can go wrong with a Fentanyl test, like a cuttoff, using a cheap test, looking for opiods, looking for fentanyl instead of norfentanyl, and more. Yet my doctor is sure the test is right. Unless he is lying to me, I know 100% the test is wrong if it thinks I wasn't using Fentanyl. This war on drugs has to stop. I could tell many more stories about how I am treated like a drug abuser first, and patient last. I don't abuse drugs, I don't even drink alcohol, not even coffee. I don't think Congress understand the mental stress all this creates. This is like banning cars just to save some lives. I understand the risks. But it has been over ten years that I have been on Fentanyl, when will you cut me some slack?REPORT COMMENTS

My life is miserable due to the new med laws. I'm 29 I have 2 children if things get worse I'll quit taking my epilepsy meds, quit using my catheters, and quit taking my heart medication. I want to live I want to be here for my kids but if it means living in constant misery and humiliation and my kids watching me suffer, I'll go our now and spare my family. I never wanted to be on pain medication people that get addicted abuse their medications and use them as a scapegoat and our leaders and society are too stupid to see through it. There will always be drugs taking my medications away and shaming me will not stop criminals stop punishing us. I am allergic to NSAIDS and I have to straight cath, I had extreme complications from child birth, my cervix was removed because it was no longer inside of me. My vaginal wall then collapsed endometriosis attached to the scar tissue I only have one ovary left if it is removed I will have to go on hormones and my endometriosis will get even worse. I have migraines caused by epilepsy and neurological disease. I have severe IBS, Gerd, and relapsing colitisis. I get sores that extend through my throat. I have nerve damage in my legs and my pain got so bad I couldn't eat or sleep my catheters were so painful I wouldn't do them enough I lost 12 pounds in 2 weeks and stayed in the ICU several times. It finally became obvious that I had no option but to take pain pills and my dr was powerless to help me and I had to go to pain management. Almost everyone that works there treats you like a criminal one lady in the lab stopped me from bring my catheter in the bathroom and it was sealed and I had to give a urine sample it's bad enough that I'm forced to cath on a public restroom just give a urine sample when I have blood all the time and then I get the 3rd degree from an ignorant lab worker that didn't know what a catheter was. I went to the hospital for a tonic clonic seizure the dr didn't even do scans or anything he kept questioning me according to family who was present I can't remember things for hrs after a major seizure he thought I was abusing drugs. When we got my paperwork the blood he drew was only used to test me for cocaine and methamphetamines. I've never even smoked a cigarette I've never had a traffic ticket but because I took painpills I was targeted my medical work said I was confused and several other things but it wasn't noted as a,symptom of a major seizure it was because the dr put it down suspecting I was on drugs. Pain management won't take blood results from my dr or the hospital. So I was advised I didn't need to have any more blood drawn since I'm anemic and had been having to have multiple blood draws, I had just had everything checked and had to give blood again. This is going too far!!!! Drs are being arrested for helping us we're forced to go to counseling because somehow it might take the pain out of having to straight cath several times a day please dear officials let me straight cathREPORT COMMENTS

Since then I have been in constant pain that is slowly deteriorating (6 years since last surgery). I am currently taking Percocet for the pain so I can get some relief to be able to focus on my work most days, but I still have to base what I do and when I do it because of the pain and everything takes me twice as long to accomplish because doctors/pain clinics don't want to prescribe extended release pain meds along with the faster acting meds for the break-through pain. All of this is due to the DEA and federal/state regulations that are a knee-jerk reaction to a small percentage of the people using and prescribing these meds either for profit or out of addiction with no real consideration to the people whos lives you are adversely affecting that just want to manage their pain so that they can actually live a life and not just be alive and in debilitating pain all day everyday.REPORT COMMENTS

I do hope you will consider all aspects of what these drugs are doing for many of us who need them and use them properly for pain management. I know without my pain medication I couldn't function. I have days when the pain reaches a level that the medication has a difficult time reducing the pain. So as you create legislation to curb the problem don't forget, many of us need and use the opioid properly. We submit to drug screening with our doctor and are held accountable for our medication with a signed contract with our pain management doctors. My son believes that with his bipolar meds and if he had something to help with his pain he could go to work instead of filing for disability. As a mother this pains me to see what he goes through everyday and not have a chance for a good life. It is no telling how he will end up being just 37 and living in his pain from an early age what it could lead him to. Filing for disability is another governmental long process.
