I watch my wife on a daily basis struggle to handle the pain that Epidural Steroid Injection's caused her. She is a very strong woman, and when she says she is hurting, you can bet by golly she is hurting bad. Most Dr.'s don't want to admit that these invasive procedures are the cause for the damage that they afflict on their own Patient's by giving them ultimatums "if you don't do this we can't continue to prescribe your pain medication." Yes, I was there, heard every word, I've heard every word from their mouths since the beginning of this nightmare. Then they come back and say they didn't say that, that there must be some sort of misunderstanding. They falsify medical records, by leaving things out. I have been battling 4 autoimmune conditions for 20 years now. Twelve years ago I contracted a form of lyme disease and a secondary skin condition. I live with nerve and muscle pain from inflammation every day and night. On my last trip to the ER, the doctor ordered a morphine drip and within about ten minutes the strangest thing happened; the relentless pain had stopped. I started crying and my husband and the doctor were concerned and thought the medication wasn't working. I said, "No, it IS working but I'd forgotten what it was like to live virtually free of pain!" I realized how inhumane it was to have to experience such levels of pain constantly and I found myself crying not only for the pain that had shackled my life, but for every person who suffers daily from chronic pain. One of my doctors said the only way they could give me morphine was if they admitted me to the hospital. So, essentially, I can be in a hospital bed without pain OR, at home in my bed with pain. We have been advocates for finding homes for stray animals and I can say that if a dog or cat were in this type of pain, they would be given medicine. I am a witness to the callous behavior of doctors toward patients who have suffer from chronic pain. Two have discharged me because I asked for medication to treat degenerative disc disease in my back. When I called to register with a new doctor they asked me what medications I was taking and after hearing the I take pain killers they told me they would get back to me, I've never heard from them again. Unfortunately for me, while degenerative discs alone won't kill me, I also have congenital heart defects and without medications it's doubtful I will live very long. Having lived through several years of pain before being diagnosed with degenerative discs however, I can say with assurance that if a heart attack occurrs, it will be preferential to living with pain so bad I can't get out of bed. I'm hoping a miracle occurs and legislation is passed making failure to treat patients as criminal as standing by and allowing a person die while doing nothing to help would be.REPORT COMMENTS

I have 3 chronic pain conditions that are not treatable by surgery or any other means other than pain medication. I am not an addict, i am a patient. a chronic pain patient. As it stands right now i am not allowed the dose of pain medication i need because of the fears i may become an addict. or that the dea will come down on my doctor for treating me. what about MY quality of life? Am I not allowed to have a day without severe pain? If the goverement takes control of doctors treating their patients and more patients suffer, I want you to know you will be held responsible for mass suicides in this nation. we already cant take much more, but if this happens we will have NO quaility of life.REPORT COMMENTS

As a human being that suffers from intractable pain, I can tell you that I am getting sick and tired of politicians and "special interest groups" getting in between me and my pain management Doctor. I just moved to south Florida, and I went to 7 pharmacies and not ONE wanted to fill my perfectly legal prescriptions, why? because of the new laws against pain patients. What are we supposed to do? I CAN NOT get out of bed or walk without my pain meds! chronic pain is that a CHRONIC condition, that just like any other chronic condition needs to be treated, before you go around making laws to take away my medications, talk to pain management Doctor's, talk to pain patient's, talk to the people that are getting affected by these laws. As a person who has chronic pain due to a rare cyst disease I have personally seen doctors who were too scared to prescribe the medications necessary in order for me to continue being a productive member of society as opposed to a bed ridden invalid. I am not an addict, I am a person in pain and God forbid any of these patronizing congressmen ever have to deal with a disease that leaves them in pain 24/7 because then they will get to see just how detrimental they're laws are to those in need. I shouldn't have to suffer because a bunch of drug addicts have worked the system. I have a great career, several college degrees and have never been in trouble with the law. My recommendation to lawmakers is that they need to become proactive rather than reactive. The knee jerk reaction to create these laws without considering those who have a medical need for narcotics is just plain stupid and inconsiderate.REPORT COMMENTS

I am 45 years old and have osteoarthritis, scoliosis, and hep C. Thus far I have been taken care of by my doctor. I recently found out what it would be like for me to be without my prescriptions, through theft. I am disappointed in the DEA and all government officials who are involved in this. It isn't fair to treat chronic pain sufferers like we are nothing but addicts and doctor shoppers. i have had the same doctor for 12 years. I don't know of anyone who suffers from chronic pain that would rob a pharmacy or harm anyone to get their medications, this is the difference between us (chronic pain patients) and them (drug addicts and dealers). I do know that if my pain medications were taken away, I would no longer have the ability to be in college courses, I wouldn't have the ability to walk or play with my grandsons, go grocery shopping, or any of the normal every day activities that so many take for granted. I fear for the future of all of us that suffer from chronic pain. I'm not just a number, I am a human being with real problems. If they take away our pain medications, they may as well take away my quality of life.REPORT COMMENTS

i have been in moderate to severe paine every day for almost 30 yrs i have an inoperable bone spur arthritis in c3 c4 neck recent bulge in lower spine making it hard to sleep thru nite and having trouble working. why would dea butt in unless one of them is in severe pain sometime maybe they can understand what most of us are going thru severre pain and trying to do a job is not pleasant i want to quit and cry just causes more pain dea agents mind your own businessREPORT COMMENTS

I am a victim of arachnoiditis, which most Dr's are not familiar with..I have been lucky, since I have been seeing my Dr. of 30 yrs.. But I have heard so many stories of pt's with the same disease as mine, not getting care, b/c they are looked upon as addicts, when we are dependent on these drugs to try to live a somewhat kind of life...REPORT COMMENTS

Being a victim of the Suicide disease, Trigeminal Neuralgia Nerve damage, I would not be able to make it without my pain medications. They call this the suicide disease because so many patients commit suicide because their doctors will not treat their pain. I have been loyal to my physician for over eight years who saved my life from sepsis, saw me through many ills, and has for the past four years treated my chronic back pain from spinal stenosis and herniated discs with compassion and dignity. On my last appointment this week, my doctor had instructed me that he can no longer treat me for chronic pain because of this new ruling and has referred me to a pain clinic. I have suffered the horrors of these torture chambers before in the past, spent money to be injected with medications that nearly killed me from bad reactions, took medications that made me sick to the stomach, suffered neurological tests that were excruciating, and handled me like a lab rat and as a drug seeker because narcotic analgesics were the only effective means to manage my pain. I am 60 years old, disabled, live alone, and am struggling to care for myself. With pain medication I can get around with the use of a cane, without medication I am bedridden with debilitating pain and cannot even prepare a meal for myself.This is a criminal act upon the elderly simply because young drug abusers give the government cause to threaten well meaning physicians who care about their patients, but must take caution to guard their licenses and reputation. I used to work for a major pharmaceutical company and have close friendships with many doctors to this day. They too recognize this as a political coup by the powers that be. The elderly are not only thrown away in this society, but now left abandoned to suffer unnecessarily with the torment of debilitating pain and humiliating circumstances. Please, have these inhumane regulations revised so we can finish our days with a little bit if dignity and compassion before we die, and lift this burden from the good doctors who truly take their work to heart and truly try to help us!REPORT COMMENTS

I would love to live my life free of narcotic pain killers,unfortunately they are a necessary part of my life.
