I've suffered from a pain-based incurable spinal cord disease for over 40 years, and my inability to get proper/reliable care is outrageous. Every doctor who sees my scans and X-rays admits my spine is destroyed, but their fear of FDA reprisals ties their hands. If you each could spend a day in my body (heck, an hour would do it), you'd be operating from a radically different perspective.

Arachnoiditis sufferers only treatment is pain medications to treat the pain. This is a rare disease and there is no cure. What has happened to the patient's right to be treated for pain? The strict monitoring of MD's that prescribe narcotics is needed, as well as requirements for pharmacies to keep the prescription data bases up to date. MD's are required to check the pharmacy data bases before prescribing narcotics and without anyone holding the pharmacies to constant updating of the patient's database, it is hard for the MD to do the checks before prescribing. A lot of monotoring to uphold current requirements is needed, not elimating the prescribing of narcotics

Mayo Clinic has a book about chronic pain & views it as a disease in itself. Chronic pain also costs millions of dollars treating the other medical health needed due to uncontroled pain. Many people could be working instead of being forced onto SSD or SSI. It has also been proven that people like me do not become addicted. We do not sell our pain medications because we need them to help dull the pain. Maybe the DEA is doing this to create a need for them to have a job. Come walk a mile in my shoes. Oh, I forgot. I can't walk.

It's a tough way to live. No one really understand unless you live through it. I'm sick and tired of feeling sick and tired.

As the Clinical Administrator of a Substance Abuse Treatment agency which includes approximately 200 long term residential treatment beds, I am well aware of the addictive potential of opiate and other narcotic medications. I am also aware of the many, many lives and families destroyed by improper and illegal prescription practices which lead to addiction and associated criminal activity. However, I am also aware that there are many individuals who live with chronic and debilitating pain that is almost unimaginable to those who have never experienced chronic pain. Without pain medication these individuals have no hope of ever experiencing a quality of life that those of us without chronic pain take for granted. Better controls do need to be placed on prescribers and the development of a pharmacy data base which monitors amounts of medications received by an individual would be beneficial. However, to deny legally prescribed medications to those with a crucial, documented medical need denies a portion of our society the ability to live a life free of pain. The pain and the hopelessness felt by the family members of those in chronic pain cannot also not be understated. Appropriately prescribed opiate and narcotic medications are crucial to the well being of individuals and their family members.

Prescription narcotics need to be carefully monitored, but should be available without shame for those whose pain is not controllable otherwise.

I suffer with pain everyday and my spinal condition has no cure, still hope one day there will be but in the meantime I suffer. Physical therapy didn't help, epidural pain blocks help for about 30 days and I can only get so many of those in a year. Pain sufferers should not have to be "labeled" and are not asking for anything illegal just a little relief from the day to day pain. I agree that if a person who has chronic pain is not given a prescription from their doctor than yes pain medication will be obtained how ever it can be. It shouldn't and doesn't have to be like this. Let doctors treat and monitor their patients.

Dear Sirs. I live with chronic pain every day from Arachnoiditis(no not a spider fobia but a spinal cord disease that also effect you autoimmune system). I try not to tell people what I take because then they see me as a drug addict when all I am really doing is trying to survive. Sincerely, Brenda Vicchiarelli

Stereotyping all patients with chronic pain because of the abuse of a few (and the doctors who let them abuse pain medicine) is unbelievable in today's society. Reminds me of all the years when doctors refused to believe alcoholism was a disease or only a small part of our population was affected by AIDS.

I have a very painful chronic disease called Acute Arachnoiditis. It is caused by treatments and diagnostic tests to the spine such as epidural shots, myleograms, dye-injected MRIs, and back surgeries. NO doctor even mentioned to me that this was a risk when they were performing these procedures. There is no cure, and PAIN MEDICATION is the only known effective treatment. I've already had my life taken away from me; now you want to take away the only thing that makes my quality of living even partly bearable? Please, walk a mile in my shoes (if you can; I can't) before you decide what's best for me!

This is a terrible practice. When I went to nursing school we were taught to always respect our patient & what they said there pain was because that is relative to each person. Every person fells differently & that us freedom & our right! No one can tell another person how much pain they are in that in just irrational & a deranged way of thinking. Also I worked in Hospice for years & if any person or family member has to go through that end of life experience the health care field is the only ones who are trusted to provide the patients & the family with relief! This authoritarian attitude does not belong in medicine! Our job is to do no harm & to relieve our patients of pain & suffering, if you look at the stats of patients becoming addicts due to professional medical advice you will see etically the #,s don't support any innerferce from the DEA & Drs and nurses need support & respect that is due to them for all the work they have earned for the title to practice & no form of the federal or state government should try to interfer with dr & patient rights! Look at the statistics & that says it all! Patients deserve respect & care & Drs deserve the respect & dignity to give it! Thank you! From a very sick chrionic pain patient to people whom I hope will never have to suffer the way I have:( God Bless You

I suffer from a horribly painful condition called "Arachnoiditis". It has changed my life drastically and my quality of life as well. The pain is non-stop and never ending. It interferes with sleep, day to day activities and everything in my life as I have to schedule everything around my pain. Without pain medication I wouldn't be able to have a life as I would be completely debilated due to this pain I face. Nobody deserves to live in pain and it isn't fair to make us suffer when we didn't do anything to cause the pain we are in.

As someone who has suffered a lot of pain and was treated with pain medicaation I can only hope that anyone who suffers pain will have the right to treatment. Pain is very debilitating. You need it to function. Thank you.
