I am prescribed vicodin and soma for servere cervical arthritis, causing unbearable muscle spasms in my shoulders and back, than can last for months. I have $ 5,000 of drugs in my cupboard that I have tried.....lyrica, Cymbalta, Celebrex, the Butrans patch. I also have had 15 MRI's in 10 years, verifying this condition. I also go to physical therapy and a chiropractor. All the expensive drugs mentioned above did nothing. Now, I am going out of the country, in a few days. My vicodin and soma prescriptions will run out, in the middle of my vacation. What the heck am I supposed to do??? My doctor and I have a very close relationship, and she has monitored me for years. Now, the pharmacy says they cannot provide me with a "vacation" refill. Apparently, this is drug addicts trick. Well, I have my flight and hotel itinerary that I can provide the pharmacy.....and they still say they can't fill it. I suppose, as some point, we can file a class action lawsuit, when enough chronic pain patients decide they are tired of the government playing doctor. ...sort of like insurance adjustors telling a body shop how they can repair your car. Who is in charge here? Your personal physician or a government, we now, that is filled with self serving knuckleheads. Leaving on my trip in a few days, and, I told my husband, I may have to stay in my room for the entire vacation, when the spasms lay me out.

I am a suffer of Fibromyalgia and I am only 33 years old. I have had to become a stay at home mother for the past 2 1/2 years. I enjoy my four children but feel locked away from society because of my day to day pain which fluctuates. On about a daily basis I feel I'm robbing my children of a mother they deserve. Just simple things as going to my freshman son's band performance most time dont go because i feel like the only parent that doesn't help. I do not help because ofmy pain, pain that isn't being managed or taken care of by my doctors in the past or current doctor. I am not the happy, bubbly, loving funny person i used to be because the pain gets me so down. Oh and I have had so many different medications some tried up to 3 times with other meds to find some relief. Along with using heat, physical therapy and addtional vitamins to help. I want a doctor to trust me,hear me and try to understand what i battle EACH AND EVERY SINGLE DAY OF MY LIFE! I want my quality of life back,my pep in my step an smile on my face....so does my loving husband and children.

I have a couple of friends who deal with chronic pain on a daily basis and now all of a sudden are cut completely off of their pain meds and thought to be a drug seeker. They are going thru crisis and can get no help. Its a sad world.

I wonder ... do the DEA Nazi's or Congress have issues getting their medicine? Doubt it. All this witch hunting accomplishes is creating a new market for illegal street drugs, overdoses and crime.

I am so relieved to see this petition, and I will do whatever I can to bring awareness to this issue. The reasons stated for targeting Pain Doctors, (as well as causing greater difficulty for the patient) is that the media is bringing more attention to the "fact," that prescription drug over dose has a very high death toll. The numbers are high, but they are not specifying the types of medication; nor admitting that it is not all opioid medications causing these deaths. The FDA, CDC AND POISON CONTROL CENTER CAN NOT EVEN AGREE ON THEIR DATA. Though, the CDC admits it is anticoagulant medication and antibacterials, as well as many other types of medication causing these deaths . The codes for "cause of death are not clear enough to claim this number as the reason for this witch hunt. Put more funding into preventing addiction, by teaching children and teenagers, rather than assuming every Pain patient is an addict or drug dealer. Pain patients seek relief due to discomfort. Addicts seek relief due to discomfort. Pain patients with a dependency on opioids feel even worse than they did before the medication, because your brain reacts in a similar way regardless of the reason or amount that a person takes. These things all closely resemble each other, and it can be confusing for the doctor's, as well as anybody overseeing said Doctor. There does need to be a solution to the death toll caused by all drugs and alcohol, but please recognize the fallout from the current methods. People in Pain are desperate as addicts when they see no light at the end of the tunnel. The data is incomplete and inaccurate. The solution is not so simple as to bully doctors into putting the judgement of the DEA above their Own. Please do consider this, because we will continue to bring it to your attention until something is done to remedy the issue. Thank-you so much for your time and consideration.

I'm tired of feeling like a criminal by Walgreens and other pharmacies since Walgreens have made it almost impossible to get my meds just to ease my chronic pain and to help me even try to function. Something needs to be done!!

The pendulum has swung too far the other way. Doctors are now afraid to treat the pain. Patient care is no longer based on symptoms and cures but fearmongering and labeling. Weed out the pill mills but allow proper doctors to properly administer care. Hospitals and patient care is should not be based on th DEA but on the Hippocratic oath.

The nurse in New Jersey quarantine claims she was treated like a criminal! Severe pain victims are and have been treated like criminals at their doctor, then at the pharmacy. Now she knows how millions have felt for years now, with it getting increasingly worse. I would love to take 0 medication, but that means I will lose consciousness walking across a room, so would become bedridden, a very worse type of "quarantine." All these decades and people aren't stopping their drug use. I should be respected for using medication for a medical reason and responsibly, not just "getting high!" Things are very backwards! Harm IS being done! Please stop it, for the millions who didn't ask for or do anything to cause the illness they have, including me. I'm hoping the prescription database being enacted in my state will remove some of the "drug seeker suspicion" when they look me up and see I have ONE MD and ONE pharmacy! The hysteria has to stop before the suicides by those who can't take the untreated pain anymore!

As a chronic pain sufferer of over 20 years, I've watched Drs give out pain meds by the hundreds for one prescription, to being labeled a drug addict and refused treatment of my pain in an emergency room. All of the recent media blasts that pain meds turn every person into a heroin addict are completely false. A person doesn't get addicted to pain meds unless they're abusing them. My heart goes out to the families who have lost loved ones to heroin overdoses, but punishing the millions who are suffering daily isn't humane! There has to be a compromise & we have the right to have our pain managed without fear. Try interviewing chronic pain patients & follow them throughout one day. Anyone in the DEA & government wouldn't make it through one hour dealing with the level of pain we live in around the clock.

As a nurse I see the hurt in people who enter the hospital on a nearly daily basis. It is idiocy to expect people to take periodic tests to see if they are actually taking the drugs. The public is not a big detox or rehab center, where rules are so strict. The only reason why we test for drugs of abuse in the hospital is if someone comes in altered and there is no other obvious reason, i.e. stroke, dementia, supra-therapeutic levels on meds, or narcotic sensitivity. People are not criminals if they request Norco or Percocet for pain, especially if the request is justified. Pain meds play a significant part in the all around treatment of chronic and acute pain. It is another modality to use in the treatment of pain. Anyone who has a attended a pain control seminar will tell you that. Now I see why individuals in pain resort to illegal substances. It is quite obvious. Nobody is listening to them. This new HCP law has very little to do with abuse and OD's. This smacks of power, control, and money. On the surface it looks like the government is doing something---all part of the failed war on drugs or the diversionary Patriot Act(remember the Sudafed rule of 2006? tied to the Patriot Act if you look closer at it) Oh, but the government is doing something about it.......they are bloating the FDA and DEA budgets and this is another way of doing it and justifying their existence. I am for law enforcement when it comes to illegal drugs and pushers and pill mills--including the Rx's who fill them. I am not for the new DEA rules and I am not for connection the FDA has with them. Too much power and what kind of oversight? No checks or balances here. Small group with huge dictatorial powers that impact us all. The common voter has no rights or say in the matters that effect them most. This is where voting at the booth makes no sense, because we are not allowed to vote on the very important issues that impact us most. We vote to put the same people back in office. Those people aren't there to make change, they are there to line their pockets and hold on to power. Change is needed in this country at a fundamental level.

The Dr.s don't have any problems pushing new medications that they get kickbacks for. Yes, I've been denied treatment for anxiety medication and was told I HAVE to go to a psychiatrist to seek medication. They'll give you Zoloft just to act like they've treated you and bait you to come back. What a joke this has become.

I am aiming this email at the people who blog here!!! this is both political and personal. None of you have written that you would like the law repealed. Send that notice to the congress and people in power, not your whining stories. I'll serve the cheese with your whine. I have read hundreds of stories like the ones here, including my own! Send a message of repeal, not, I AM IN PAIN.....We are all in some kind of chronic pain, so, that is a given or you wouldn't be on this blog in the first place and it would not matter to you. Send a message of repeal! Don't stew in your own pity juices! We all know the DEA and FDA are out to keep their positions and seeming autocratic power within government and will broach no challenge to that power. These two entities represent the big pharmacology businesses(only a few will be able to make and distribute the drugs ), the illegal drug businesses(makers and pushers of heroin, MJ, meth., etc), powerful politicians(who have big pharma in the back pocket and vice versa), and overseas interests(other interests across the border--makers and distributers). Too much money and power to hold on to and no consideration for the vast majority of us. Same old story. Will voting out the crooks in congress make any difference? Probably not, but we can give it a shot. Prohibition did not work then with alcohol and will not work now. Repeal this insanity now and cut the DEA's budget to go after the real problem drugs: cocaine, heroin, meth. Go after the pill mills and the Rx's that fill them....... Leave the rest of us honest citizens alone and let us be treated by our physicians, not the DEA---lacking both an MD license and Hippocratic oath of Do No Harm!

Just had a VA doctor physically assault me during a abusive exam, told my caregiver to shut up and sit down when they asked the Dr. to take it easy. I complained and was attacked by her superiors, and labled by the VA police after 40 years of care and complete doc,s of injury,s, etc. what I've read here I'm not alone . 1936 Nazi Germany did the same and then the euthanasia started! The DEA will say and do anything to further their (keep or job) mentality. They all sick in their head the comments verify, not in their body as are the disabled, who are having their human rights ignored, The government has gone to far in their micromanagement. This the agenda of the right wing (conservative republican) agenda. Where are the Lawyers now! In fear of the terrorist's (the DEA) they wouldn't wear masks to hide who they are i.e . Maybe we could all get together on kick starter to fund a class action law suit against the FDA,DEA, and the president for violating provision of the civil rights act 1964 and the ADA. The unspoken agenda! The government can't be allowed to do this level of injustice, without balance in the implementation, it is simply wrong, illegal, abusive and criminal. The government knows they are trashing the constitution , and our lives and the doctors are cowards for allowing it without loud protest.

I am a chronic pain patient. My doctor of close to 15 years will no longer prescribe pain meds. I'm assuming because of new laws. The only outcomes I can see that the new laws will accomplish would be an increase in the amount of suicides; a higher income for those selling pain meds & heroin & an increase in the amount of people applying for ssd & welfare.(for those who are only still working because their pain is managed) & two of the consequences will further drain our failing economy. But most of all the people pushing these new laws through will NEVER understand the the devastating effects on their quality of life until it's them living their lives on a sofa writhing in pain all day. Can't wash dishes, do laundry, go to your family weddings, birthdays & etc. You either pray for help or release from it. I think all of us have done both

I have chronic cervical neck pain. I have had 3 nerve blocks to no end. My physician refuses to prescribe pain meds (Ultram, neurontin, etc are not effective). I have been to E R several times in last 2 years. They treated me for the immediate pain and given me prescriptions for up to 10 hydocodone. These are, by law, all they can prescribe. I am grateful for this treatment. Depending on my pain levels these prescriptions can last me up to a month. Obviously, I am not abusing them. My pain levels peak and wain depending how much I use my right arm. However, every time I go, depending on the doctor I am asked why no one is prescribing me pain meds. ...... because they refuse to!!!! There are those doctors and nurses that treat me like a pill seeker and are condescending and belittling. The entire seeking of doctor's help is very depressing and to say the least frustrating. Physicians job is to treat conditions that affect quality of life!! I believe not being able to pick up and play with my grandchildren or clean my house, sometimes just drying my hair qualifies me. I already have a lifelong diagnosis of depression and anxiety....... domino effect!!!

They humiliated me at the counter in a loud voice and made me feel like I had no business taking my medication. I just don't know what to do. I guess i'm going to be confined to bed from now on.

The DEA needs to understand there are people out here with true pain and suffering. Records that are proof of that. Leave the Dr's to be the Dr's and until they walk a mile in our shoes. Pun intended. Or live a day of our life with pain and suffering and nowhere to turn. They just need to leave it alone and monitor the patients for abuse or Dr. Shopping ect. They already have the equipment in place to do so. Use it. Leave the people with real pain alone & stopp harassing the Dr's. They are trying to do there job. Yes there are some that dont need to be practicing. But the majority took the oath to first do NO HARM! And I have a question for the good old DEA what are you going to do when all the hospitals are full of patience withdrawing from opiates and other medications that you have control of. And when they are refused and cannot live a quality life what are they suppose to do? I have seen several mentions of suicide on here alone. I am a Christian and would never do that. But I can pretty much predict that probably 75 percent of these people will end up on the street illegally buying heroin because it will be the only option that they have to get an opoid that will control their pain. and from experience I can tell you that I had a family member who was a heroin addict for years that is not a place I or anyone should want to go or have to go. not to mention these are people that are not drug addicts they are not going to know how much or even what they are getting off of the streets. Our great DEA thinks that they are saving lives they are going to wind up with more morgues full of people that are unnecessarily there. Just trying get relief to live their life and be able to maintain and control their pain. What then? Any answers people?Somebody needs to do something about this now. They claim they been controlling drugs on the streets for years. Not true! You can go to any town and get some type of drug without ever knowing anyone to get it from. Just go to a bad neighborhood. Boom!

With multiple abnormalities in my spin and sacral / pelvic area, I have tried every remedy known to man. I have a spinal cord stimulator implanted and still require opiate medication to achieve any semblance to a "normal" life. The unprodutive "war on drugs" accomplishes little because abusers will circumvent the law, or move on to a different drug of choice, while placing undue burdens upon the medical community and those unfortunate souls that suffer needlessly. Why not just put a gun to their heads and pull the damned trigger?

I have had a broke leg, foot ,shoulder knee collar bone which sticks up under the skin about 1 inch and I was told by a dr at Sutton wv that I just need extalac or Tylenol,.dr doug given then sent me to a pain clinic where I was completely humiliated again. How is it that these supposed doctors can want to even live when they let people live in pain throught there lives.. A dr takes a oath to keep people healthy and free from pain. Yet look at what they are doing and how they are treating people..i can not even live my life normally because of suffering with pain because of heartless people like doug given . I cant play with the kids much I cant do my house work and my life was greately effected by this.. I am ashamed of these so called doctors for not standing up for the good people that live in pain and suffer. THIS IS WRONG THEY ALL SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEM SELVES. I feel let down by America its self. and to think how my family has fought so hard in combat and war. I am just at a loss for words . I can tell you this . no for giveness to any one that has taken gods plant that was put here for us so we do not have to suffer. and say we cant have nothing for pain. I would not want to be in there shoes when they die and face god. and I hope every one of these heartless beings one day wake up and realize how many people they are letting suffer through there lives THIS IS WRONG.. What is happening to America? I am so let down and sad. Ones that are involved in allowing suffering will never be for given. It is a fact that people that take a low dose oppiet pain medicine can live there lives happy healthy and pain free.. Allowing suffering and not treating patients right for pain is WRONG. WRONG...

I've read countless stories of people in excruciating pain being denied anything more than Advil (which, if it worked for them, no need for a doctor visit!) writing their suicide letter, explaining exactly why they did it, lest the cause of death be written up as "heart failure" or other reason. Here in America, we can't even tell our physician our symptoms due to "red flag words!" I was personally "suspected" for attempting to get a TICK removed! What did I say wrong by asking Doctor to take a look at this tick bite, I couldn't see if I got it all out? This is beyond hysteria. Oh, but run those TV ads for all manner of strange medicine to stop you from urinating & holding up your friends at the mall! All with side effects-sudden death. Superior American Medical Care? I don't think so. Was Thomas Duncan, ebola patient, tossed out of ER because he said his stomach hurt, thus the "drug addict red flag" and cutting ebola loose in the country? I'd bet money on.yes, that happened. Sickening, literally.

To live your life in constant agony is horrible. To be afraid to talk to the doctor because you are afraid of being "red flagged" is terrible. To need medication so that you can sit at your desk and do your job, to be able to support your 3 children. I don't want to go on disability. I don't want to depend on the government to take care of me. I only want enough relief to be able to function like a normal person. To be able to participate in my children's lives. I want my physician to treat me. All of me. That is why they go to school for so long. I don't want to be going to multiple doctors that may give me medication that interacts with something I'm already taking. I am aware that it is my responsibility to inform doctors of my meds that I am on but have you ever forgotten something ? When you deal with constant pain it interferes with memory not to mention the fog that accompanies fibromyalgia. Please reform these laws! Allow our doctors to fully perform their jobs!
