After all the Doberman has done for the military, it is a shame that forces now want to shun this remarkable, fearless, loyal breed. Shame on the Army!Oct 21st, 2009Someone from Southwick, MA writes:
And this is what is done to the dogs whose ancestors played such a huge role in WWII?REPORT COMMENTS

Since my dobermans consistently help kids read, Special Education children learn self-esteem, I am ashamed that our government is considering this be done to such a faithful breed!REPORT COMMENTS

As one that shares my house with two dobermans I'm ashamed to hear of this. My doberman's are therapy dogs at two VA facilities. Fed and state homes here in Phoenix. We have also been asked to participate in a new program for the hospital side. It is obvious you don't know doberman's, do not know their bite standing in the USA or realize how smart they are. They are in the top 5 list for intelligence. Shame on you for doing this since these dogs saved a lot of butts in several wars. When the vets see my dogs coming they line up to interact and tell stories of how these dogs helped them, even the ones that were used in the German War Camps.REPORT COMMENTS

Dobermans were part of our military in WWII. They are courageous, devoted, and intelligent. They saved the lives of many Marines, and even have a statue in their honour. Dobermans are fabulous family dogs. A military family gives up enough when enlisted, don't take a member of their family also.REPORT COMMENTS

Ask your veterinary folks which dogs they've been bitten by most. I guarantee it isn't the doberman. What? Goldens? Gonna ban them now too? Makes me glad I got out when I did.REPORT COMMENTS

There is absolutely no evidence or research that demonstrates a doberman is any more aggressive than the GSD or Malinois that are now being used. This is generalization at its worst.REPORT COMMENTS

This ban is just wrong. I guess the Marines fighting alongside the so called "devil Dogs" during WWII meant nothing in regards to the many lives saved by this breed. Maybe the Marines know something the Army doesn't: that this magnificent breed is a wonderful family pet and one hell of a soldier!REPORT COMMENTS

OK, down & dirty this is bigotry, profiling, witch hunting, etc. Both my wife and I have experienced parents frantically herding their children across the street as we approached with our Dobes in a beautiful mannerly heel. So, we try to educate when the opportunity is presented. Large / protection breed owners and breeders do have a very serious responsibility to handle their breeds properly and most do. The dog world is well established w/ training programs and testing for temperment / obedience (eg CGC, WAC). Perhaps a housing agency-type entity (military) does have the right & responsibility to require the owner to demonstrate their own due diligence. The shame here is that crazies or just plain idiots get to define the discussion, either by ascribing to ignorant legislation / policy or by being irresponsible dog owners. The latter are our major challenge, because we know they are out there in hordes, failing to pick up after their animals when they crap in public, allowing them to run loose, behave badly and worst, abandoning them when the dog doesn't train itself to live successfully with people. Those knuckleheads hurt us most, because without them, the crazies wouldn't have a platform. In the meantime, responsible owners must lobby together, sign petitions, beat back these well-intentioned but f'd up attempts at controls and be guardians of our breed and dogs in general. Rescues can be dramatic and touching success stories to this very issue and deserve exposure as object lessons. Thanks for this heads up and petition.REPORT COMMENTS
