I'm an Army wife with three small children. We have a Doberman in our home as well. This dog is the most gentle, loving affectionate animal I have ever seen. Sure, she looks scary, but that's as far as it goes. She loves kittens, and loved to be squeezed, hugged and cuddled by my toddlers.

Doberman owners for 15+ years, ours are the best-behaved dogs in the neighborhood, friends to people and dogs alike. These are the best dogs in the world and the military knows it. They should be welcomed in every home on every base in the country. They have served the military courageously and should not be "repaid" with banishment.

Those in favor of banning dobermans have obviously never had the fortunate opportunity to spend any time with one. 10 minutes with a loving doberman would change their mind an dprobably make them want to own one of these loyal and loving companions.

As a veterinarian I have seen and/or treated a good number of Dobermans over the years. During this time I have never been bitten by a Doberman or Dobe mix. I have, however, been bitten by several breeds that are listed among the "most popular" by AKC, but are not found on any "dangerous dog" list. Any vet will tell you the same story. Far from being "aggressive," Dobermans are usually hiding under the bench shaking or, at least, glued to their owner's leg. Further, like other working breeds DP's are among the most intelligent and easily trained dogs, and generally respond well to basic obedience training. In addition to my DVM, I have veterinary acupuncture training, and so have also worked on a number of Dobermans with painful necks, knees or hips. If, as the Army claims, these dogs were especially "dangerous" and inherently "aggressive" as a rule, they would NEVER let me place AP needles, and especially not in painful areas or in sensitive spots like head and paws. Yet, I do this routinely with Dobermans and with other large breeds. The US Army unfortunately has a long history of discrimination. However, studies from AVMA, CDC and HSUS have consistently shown that there is NO particular breed that is more dangerous than another, and that dog attacks depend primarily on circumstances, NOT BREED. Sensational publicity about "vicious" dogs sells a lot of airtime on commercial stations, but unfairly and incorrectly brands a particular breed as "dangerous." This fuels "aggressive dog" laws that codify breed discrimination despite a mountain of reputable research to the contrary. Sadly, this also virtually guarantees that dogs of this "dangerous" breed will end up topping the euthanasia statistics at shelters, regardless of temperament. A policy of discrimination against any particular breed will make the US Army directly responsible for the unnecessary deaths of hundreds of thousands of perfectly friendly, adoptable dogs. What is worse, it will potentially make it indirectly responsible for millions of unnecessary deaths, should other institutions, insurance companies, other businesses, and municipalities look to the US Army "dangerous dog" policy for guidance. This is simply inhumane, and obviously unacceptable.

This is the most prejudicial and biased ruling I've ever seen. Anyone with any knowledge would know dobermans are not aggressive. To target one specific breed demonstrates ignorance. Any dog, including a chihuahua can demonstrate aggressiveness and bite. Wake up people - it's the owner who is the root cause. And it is the ignorance of the military, the Army in this case, who are unable to recognize Dobermans are the most well-behaved dog there is. Have owned Dobes for over 30 years and "Never" had an incident - all wonderful temperments and people-dogs. Shame on the government for enacting this rule

We have had Doberman's for thirty years. How inaccurate is this. They are the best dogs. So Loyal, faithful, and smart.

My daughter has 2 Dobies. These dogs have wonderful temperaments and are extremely good with children of all ages. This breed should not be on any ban list. Owners need to be targeted, not the dogs.

I have 6 dogs, and by far the smartest and the leader of my pack is my doberman. He is the best dog I've ever had. What a great breed!

This is terrible!!!!! These men and woman are putting there life on the line for our country and this how they are repaid? They have enough things to worry about and now they have one more. I've worked with and been around many dogs though out my life and have found that breed is not in away a determination of a dog temperament. It all how they are raised.

I just had to put my doberman down due to health reasons. Dobermans are the best. Dobermans are not aggresive but very loveable.

So.....evidently it's illegal to discriminate against people.....but when it comes to animals, dogs in particular, it's encouraged? My husband and I have both owned many dogs over the years. The ONLY time I have EVER had a dog be aggressive it was a DACHSHUND who turned and bit me in the face with no provocation, which I still carry a scar and a tooth mark from years later. But yet a dog is going to be deemed aggressive simply due to the fact that it is a large breed? Come on now.....

First, I am sorry for your loss of your Dobie baby. I understand how diificult it to say good-bye. My Doberman, was poisoned, just so people could break into my home. I trained my Dobie for my son, that was disabled.Dobies are very smart, loyal, and great family dogs. I do not understand why the Military would add them to their list. Second, even through I am in the NW, I have and cherish the Doberman Breed for thirtie years, and there are exceptions with this breed. However, this exception can be with any breed, I do not think it is a problem to be placed on a list of "bad dogs", why not add the bad owners on a list instead? Third, I find it ironic that the military want to add this breed to the list, when the military and air-force base in my state, uses them for security. Why the double standard? I can honestly say that all my dobermans, raised, fostered, breed, or etc, 98% have all been non-aggressive. the other two 2% were either dominate and had social issuses that had been abused or not properly socialized, again not the dog, it is the owner. I have seem more aggression from other breeds, small dogs to larger dogs that most people would not even consider to be aggressive. Bottom line this isn't a breed that should be added to the list, by far. I hope I can help your cause, even living miles away, and best wishes.Ammy
