Texting in school is significantly increasing the incidences of bullying AND is a huge distraction as students are never fully enveloped in the academic environment due to the ability to constantly converse with friends about unrelated topics.Feb 9th, 2011Someone from Fayetteville, GA signed.

Allowing cell phones on campus has seriously impacted education in that cheating occurs and teachers are constantly having to not only watch for the signs of cell phone use, but then also address the consequent misbehavior. This includes the original off task behavior that carries its own problem, but also the problems of losing class time to take the phone, write it up later as a referral, keep the phone til the end of the day and then hope the student comes quickly to get it so you don't have to hang out in your room, arguments with students who will not give up their phones (which escalates the referrals), and other issues such as texting to students in other classes. I, for one, do not want classrooms to have them for these reasons. I have other means of addressing and leading my students to North Carolina Standard Course of Study objectives. There is, believe it or not, a large number of students who actually do NOT have their own personal cell phone, or who are not allowed to bring it to school or use it during the day. Developing classroom lessons around using phones is like sending homework home with students that must be done on a computer and printed out! Not everyone has a computer or the internet or a printer at home! However, if any rule or law is going to go into effect, it should be one like this one.REPORT COMMENTS
