I am the custodial parent of a child who is 25 years old. Her dad and I were married when she was born. We separated and got a divorce shortly after she was 4 months old. The total amount of support I received for this child has been ~4,000k. Never received on a regular basis. Which if calculated over the 18 years that was court ordered support comes out to $18.51 per month. Ridiculous. Would not be enough even in a third world country--certainly not enough for the SF Bay Area where it was ordered and managed the enforcement of. This low amount is how much he ever actually paid. The order, of course, was $400 per month, roughly. Who cares, is my attitude now. He never even tried to pay it. Is pulling his drivers license a good idea? While some might say that it is because it is a punishment of sorts, it never worked. It never inspired him to pay the support. It never helped him get a job or hold one. And I do not believe that it helps anyone at the end of the day. The things that might have helped him--and ultimately his daughter by providing support would have been: -providing vocational training at no cost -providing assistance in keeping his drivers license, lowered traffic fees, something under a yet not created "child support encouragement program" -assistance to find and maintain housing, if behind on child support payments -assistance with cost of counseling (as losing the custody of a child for mother or father at any point is a horrible trauma--like no other) -assistance with ongoing supportive services--perhaps filing tax returns, learning disability screening, maybe other disability screening... The shame-based current modus operendi does not work. The program needs to be claimed as a failure and re-engineered. No threat of jail. That only creates stress for the person required to pay. Not conducive to a healthy parent child relationship. No pulling the drivers license, removing the adult's ability to act independently to the greatest extent possible... Something that elderly people die of after theirs is removed. As it symbolizes (at least) their freedom being lost. So, I believe it is an unhealthy system. Does not benefit child, custodial parent or non-custodial parent. Not only are there no winners in this system, there are ONLY losers. The child loses a parent (if jailed for non-payment) and the loss of support (if drivers license is suspended for non-payment). Not to mention the loss of a relationship with a parent who they do not live with and/or share a minimized stress dynamic (happy). Government agencies and servants who do not see this are choosing not to. It could not be more obvious. Nothing about the current system works. Must be fixed.

I'm trying all I can. I lost my dream career because of this ridiculous law. How do these people expect us pay if we can't drive out to get jobs.

I think the suspension of driver license for the non-paying parent is the greatest idea!!!!! Most will not pay without a wage garnishment, so what options are left? Pay and shut up about it!

They also need to change the law for passports to i don't think it's fair if you're paying your child support you can obtain your passport I don't think it's fair that if you pay your child support you get your driver's license suspended or go to jail if you can't pay how are you going to pay if you can't get to work every day and then the 10% they put on your arrears every month it's kind of hard to get ahead to pay all of it off and they call us dead beat dads the only deadbeat people here are the people collecting our child support from the counties in the States I think there needs to be a change in these laws because there too harsh and they need to look into changing these laws if they want us to pay then Work with us don't work against us..........

This law is broken, keeps honest parents tied up in trying to honestly support the child.

If you can't feed em don't breed em! I alone take care of my son, I am not on welfare! I did not create this child on my own so yes his father should be held responsible for not providing anything not even his time. I do not need his help, I do it alone but you better believed I will enforce my son's right to child support from his father. Job or no job, license or no license he still would NOT pay. His life should not be made any easier from anyone because mine isn't. This law has helped more than it hasn't because the majority of fathers only pay to not get their license revoked, otherwise they would be constantly late or not pay at all like before it was put in place. kuddos to the parents who take care of their children's every needs. These posts are just ridiculous except for one, I agree that when a license is revoked there should be provisions to be able to go to work, even people who gets a dui gets that. Eliminating this law should not be an option and it will not pass, on the contrary stricter laws should be put in place!

Need a license to get a decent paying job to pay the ridiculous amount the courts are ordering non custodial parents to pay. Was not hired for many jobs, hell wasn't even considered for some, because of the suspended license. Idiot state politicians see it as another way to line their pockets without having to do any work themselves. Another way to make the rich richer and poor dead! Are you even giving the money you steal from us people to our children? $2000 in tax refund money was taken from me, but my ex told me she only got $800. I asked the dcss why that happened and the stupid ***** told me "well after all the court costs and legal fees were taken out, $800 was all that was left." Are you ****ing kidding me?!?!? THIS WHOLE CHILD SUPPORT SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE THROWN OUT and after carefully thinking it all out, put it back in to play. Having the ability to control another person's life the way the dcss does can not be legal in any state! Bloodsuckers!

CS screws you in court then expects you to pay amounts you cannot afford when you cannot pay DL gets suspended you then lose your job or get the car impounded which also eventually gets you fired california is not a public transportation friendly state say like parts of NY people in CA have hardships and cant pay for 1 MONTH and boom there goes your DL then the job and the ability to pay now you are on welfare, food stamps .etc instead of being a productive citizen had you had your license now you are forced to depend of the goverment getting into more CS debt and putting the nation more into debt. CS should not be allowed to take away your DL. God bless Amerika This so godless Amerika

My ex-husband hasn't paid child support since 2013. He hasn't work and doesn't plan on getting a "real" job that would enable me to have his salary garnished. He's now driving for Uber and making just enough money to keep up his cell phone bills & pay a bill or two. I hope if he gets pulled over or tries to renew his license they absolutely take him into custody. My children aren't benefitting the least bit from this these efforts he's making.
