Most employers are asking if you have a driver's license even if your not applying for a driving job I sort of understand why, due to the fact that a lot of people have there license suspended behind this ridiculous law and as an employer u want employees to show up to work and not be taken to jail on there way to work it's a catch 22 damned if you do & damned if u don't but Congress needs to fix this problem it hurts more people then it does good.REPORT COMMENTS

The Imperial County DCSS office placed an intent to suspend after there was a hiccup in my February 2019 child support payment where they misapplied my payment. I called and made an extra payment. I received a letter the week after March 8th saying they lifted the intent to suspend. On March 19th I received a notice from DMV they intend on suspending my license on April 19th if I dont fix the issue with DCSS. My lawyer has called the Imperial County DCSS several times and they say they are going to lift it but they still haven't lifted it. I am now in an overpayment status and there is no reason to suspend my license. Also I have been selected for a new job and if my license gets suspended then I will be removed from the hiring process. Not sure what to do at this point.REPORT COMMENTS

It's too much a hardship - I can never drive to visit my kid 1 1/2 hours away.. I can't find a job because every time I see one it's a 2 hour bus ride away or way too expensive to pay for Uber there and back every day. I haven't driven in 3 years and mostly have to walk everywhere, it's dangerous for me walking at night - not to mention how awful it is during the high heat of summer or the bitter cold and rain during winter. I've never had any DUI or traffic infractions yet I've lost my driving privileges. My arrears is going up every month with 10% interest and I'll never pay it off with a local minimum wage job.. I need a good paying job and the ability to drive so I can commute. This is cruel and way overkill for being behind in Child Support - also my kid is 22! I'm suspended purely for arrears and up to 25,000 and climbing - I'll never get out of this :(REPORT COMMENTS

Because I moved to Texas child support suspended my license for $2500 and it has prevented me from getting a job or being able to get hired on a few driving jobs. Which isn't fair because I didn't even get a notification in the mail about my license being suspended. My life has been ruined because of child support. I was sixteen when my son was born. I was also on probation and was forced to move out of state with my mother because of her health and needing help from family. I moved back the month my son was was born. My sons mom gave me chlamydia twice. who in their right mind would continue to stay in a relationship with such a high health risk? I haven't stopped working since I was 16 I'm 35 now. I had my wages garnished since 18, I've been homeless off and on I've had to move back and fourth and work two fulltime jobs most of my adult life. I haven't had a license in years and now I have a bunch of suspended license tickets. I hardly got to see me son grow up even though I tried but do to not having a stable place of my own or transportation or having to move to find work, I missed out on seeing my boy grow into a young man. I want to die, every night I pray to a god i dont even believe in for terminal illness. Child support has taken everything from me. I love my son and now he's an 18 year father and may be facing the same struggles I had to. I cry every Time I think about it, I'm afraid my son is going to end up In my shoes. My life was ruined by this law. My oldest child had to go live with her dad because I was being abused my my husband. I had another child from the marriage that I raised alone. Living in county with extremely limited public transportation and very few jobs makes it very hard to find work. Many people have to commute 45+ miles one way just to have a job. This law destroyed my life and forced me to be on Welfare. I've lived in places where there was NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION close enough to walk to especially when the area you live in has extremely steep hills that make walking even 2 blocks extremely hard let alone a mile. With 5.pm being the last bus to return home finding work had HUGE RESTRICTIONS. I made $32 a day when I did work and the custodial parent (father) made almost that in just one hour as did his new wife. My son and I had to live with My grandmother because i was trying to get on my feet after divorcing my abusive husband. Suffering from PTSD from the marriage/divorce made it HARD, to say the least. Add your divers license being suspended because of a HUGE error made by DCSS saying i owed them when I didn't is how My Hell began. DCSS suspended My license without notifying me and I had to pay dearly to get it back with the money I had been saving to get my own place with my other child. Right around the time I had almost financially recovered DCSS AGAIN made another error this time saying I owe more than the last time and I didn't. They suspended My license again without notification and I found out by getting pulled over which if course led to more fines to pay and at the time homeless with a child at a friend's house while waiting for a settlent and my tax return so I could get a home. DCSS refused to send a letter to me or the courts admitting they made another error and wrongfully suspended My license for the second time, so I was left having to pay court fines AGAIN. If course this took every bit of money I had coming. DCSS only offered me their apologies for these costly errors on their behalf . these errors is how they learned that My oldest daughter lived with her father and he wasn't getting child support from me because he didn't need it. He just wanted me to get on my feet. DCSS kept sending him letters to go after me because it was his right. He kept telling me that they wouldn't give up and eventually he gave in and decided to ask for $30 a month. I lost my job and was still homeless and completely broke so I had to beg my grandma to let us come live with her again. I was still receiving cash aid even when I did have a job because I didn't make enough money. I was way below poverty level and couldn't make that unneeded $30 payment so my license again was suspended. I was forced to drive with a suspended license and have a total of 7 offenses 3 of which were paid. I currently owe almost $9000 in fines with the courts alone thanks to DCSS. My son is now grown and I'm disabled from two different bicycle accidents and can't even get SSI because I can't get to Santa Rosa from Lake County via public transportation. This "Bill" completely ruined any and all chances I had to do something with my life. Absolutely no income and disabled with no license. . Thank God that my boyfriend has not kicked me to the curb. He has taken on the financial burden of me and my son.REPORT COMMENTS

Laws should not change just because people are negatively affected by them when they break those laws. There is an alternative to having your drivers license suspended- pay the child support. A handbook is given to each parent, and it states the consequences to not paying support, as well as how to ask for modification of child support. There is no reason a license should be suspended, so long as the person ordered to pay does, in fact, pay. Child support obligation is ceased after being incarcerated until after the parent is out of jail. If there is not a serious consequence, nobody would be pressured to pay support, and children would be left without. I can't think of a better consequence. my ex wife set me up to catch her with another man ....and I did the wrong thing and went to prison when I got out she had an order of 900+ per kid @3 kids my order was $2700 a month for the first 5 years I was locked up .....I was never served papers and Shasta county has done nothing to to even try to help me my past due account was nearly 140,000 dollars and I have not had A D.L. since 2000 because of that....im a mechanic by trade so you can see how that has kept me from having a decent job for the last 17 years to top it off my ex passed away ten years ago so who are they collecting child support for.....my balance is now about 30,000 with no end in site.......when will it end I'm 45 yrs old and have nothing ....I stay with family cause I cant afford rent ,cant rent a place cause my credit score is 500 so no landloard will rent to me and cant even get a good job in 90% of the u.s. because I have no d.l. the only thing I'm good at is fixing cars ,truck , equipment and driving tow truck and long haul trucking ...but when I was in prison the state of cal gave me a inmate drivers licence and had me working on ever vehicle in the state fleet , cal fire and certified me to on all 7 types of fork lifts the day I paroled they took it all back and left me high and dry....all I want is my dl and six months to get my self settled and I will make my payment that are now $300 a month .....can someone please help ......please change these laws so I can have a life and be a productive member of my communityREPORT COMMENTS

I came across this petition because I had the same thought to try and get this law changed. My son is a hard working young man who has fallen behind on his child support and has not been able to catch up enough to get his license back. He has not had a license in five years. He has had a hard time keeping a job and paying his child support due to both the low wages/cost of living in California and the lack of a drivers license. I believe that this law imposes the most absurd penalty because when you suspend a person's license in California, you are potentially taking away their ability to work and pay their child support. They end up getting further and further behind and it becomes very difficult to get out of the hole. Please find a different penalty for people that are behind or not paying their child support.REPORT COMMENTS

Fathers have rights too. They are being erased from their children's lives by their ex partners. They are ordered to pay support even when is will cause a burden on them. Their ex partner the proceeds to commit Parental Alienation and the court will only try to force the father to pay support they cannot afford instead of enforcing their rights. Their ex partner asks for more money due to their absence, they usually are granted such and they live a nice lifestyle leaving the Father to become over burdened and get behind on payments. So we take the fathers drivers license making it impossible for them to get ahead. They eventually become erased from their children's lives. This is the saddest thing I've ever seen. I know of one girl who, at 11 years old. committed suicide due the absence of her father and her mothers manipulation. The mother even told the father once to buy her a couch and she would allow a short visit. I would ask congress, just who is the deadbeat in this situation.REPORT COMMENTS

I served honorably in the US Navy for 10 1/2 yrs before being medically retired due to injury. My only income is VA Disability which is less than $2,000 a month to support myself and my son. my support amount i am ordered to pay for my daughters is $1275.00 per month, how in gods green earth am i suppposed to support myself and my son on a few hundred bucks? To add to the FUBR situation DCSS revoked my license so how the **** am i supposed to get my son to school, Dr. appointments, my son has asthma and had to have open heart surgery last year due to his mothers drug use while pregnant left him with 3 heart defects. i cant walk long distances or stand around waiting for a damn bus with a 5 year old and pay for every darn bus ride with money i don't have. If I was to get a job or want to look for one big inconvenience to if the bus don't run or be at that stop at the time i need it to be. I have 3 children, 2 daughters from my 1st marriage whom I have been denied my right to visitation by their evil vindictive mother and have not seen them since Christmas 2014. 6-years people they're now 11 & 10. My 3rd is my son who is 5 years old from my 2nd marriage. My son's mother abandoned our family including her own 5 yr old daughter for her weed dealer and has had his baby whom both almost died at birth because of complications due to drug use. She has yet to make any kind of effort to contact me or her own son since Christmas 2014 which is the last time she ever spent anytime with her 2 kids before i packed up what i could and left NC for ca in march 2015. now its mid-2017. This stupid law is just another way to hinder people just because they cant pay because this ****ed up court system sides with the mother just because she cries and whom doesnt even have a job steels money from her parents and from me from my deployments that i earned takes all the tax returns leaving me with jack shit.
