I drove a school bus for 25 years and decided that school busses should be designed by School Bus Drivers. There are so many things that are missing or not designed right too many Blind Spots, No PLACE FOR ITEMS THAT NEED TO BE USED BY THE DRIVERS, there should be a mirror across the top back wall or two corner so we can see what goes on in back seats where a lot of trouble is going on.Windows should be Tinted to help keep out direct sun so the bus doesn't get so Hot. Should have some kind of Alarm in Back of Bus to keep kids and Parents from walking behind the bus with there kids a lot of Parents are Stupid around School Buses there are so many more Dangerous Things that Need to be CHANGEDSep 3rd, 2015Someone from Islip, NY writes:
The windows only open a little so no student can put their heads out of the windows. There is very little air coming in so it is very very hot.REPORT COMMENTS

I drive a bus in Illinois. The schools let out early due to heat sometimes but then put the kids on a hot school bus. Even on days when the temps outside are in the 80's it gets hot on the bus. But when you add extreme heat and humidity, it becomes dangerous. Dangerous for kids who are on a short time and extremely dangerous for a driver who is on for 2 or more hours at a time. Fans and open windows do not alleviate the problem. when a driver is overheated he/she can become ill quickly which poses an additional danger to the students. The only way to make school districts or bus companies get A/C is to force them through legislation. And while you're at it, you need to make stop arm cameras required equipment as well.REPORT COMMENTS

I am a RN and very concerned about dehydration in children who sweat on a hot bus. Kids are more likely to suffer from dehydration than adults. My children are on a medication than can contribute to overheating, so I am extremly concerned. The argument that "we suffered through it as kids too" does not apply, considering school begins earlier in August these days. Plus - who doesn't want a safer, more comfortable, environment for their child?REPORT COMMENTS

We live in an area of extreme heat. Even during a "heat advisory" when it is deemed unsafe for children to have recess my son is put on a bus without AC. The school districts response to our concern is "if you don't like it, drive them back and forth to school". This is not an option for most working parents and is a ridiculous solution. My son comes home drenched with sweat and with a horrible headache. I'm sure the driver feels the same or worse.REPORT COMMENTS

I have driven school bus for 19 years and enjoy it...but I agree that it is an breeding environment for virus and carbon monoxide. I also drive semi and feel that there are not enough facilities for the drivers at load locations. Some have no facilities and you have drivers relieving themselves in cups.REPORT COMMENTS

Not to mention, having to keep an eye on over 60 chilldren and drive safely at the same time, all buses should have additional supervision, where needed on their buses so the driver is not distracted while driving.REPORT COMMENTS

I drive a school bus in Florida. The temps get into the upper 90 plus humidity. Sitting in a bus at on an asphalt parking lot at a school the temps inside the bus reach and exceed 123 degrees. This is unsafe for drivers as well as the passengers being loaded. It takes a couple hours to cool that bus down to a reasonable temp.REPORT COMMENTS
