Absolutely absurd that my 5 year old will be on a bus for 3 hours daily (1.5 there and 1.5 home) with no AC. On top of just being on the bus that long in general. Up at the crack of dawn and not home till dinner. Long day for a kindergartner. Makes me not want to send her at all.REPORT COMMENTS

i also think it is extremely unhealthy for our kids to go back to school July 21 in one of the hottest cities in America. What kind of bullcrap is this when it reaches triple digits here everyday and they are going back in the hottest month?!REPORT COMMENTS

It is way to hot here in NC for these children to be riding buses without air conditioning. Those small windows are no relief to that huge bus!REPORT COMMENTS

When my 5 year old child got off of his school bus, I noticed he was dripping with sweat, face beet red, week, & lethargic. I looked at the other kids and noticed the other kids looked the same. All of the windows were up. I did not know that there is no air conditioning on school busses! I absolutely was horrified that I allowed my child to ride in these harmful conditions. Parents are arrested for forgetting their kids in a hot car and kids are dying from being left in hot cars! WHY are school buses not required to have air condition?!! This is harmful to our children and the driver!! I read an article that with the windows down a school bus temperature is 91 degrees and with the windows up the temperature reaches 97-100 degrees! !! I am so concerned for all children who have to ride a school bus!! Something has to be done!REPORT COMMENTS

Last year my Autistic daughter flopped off the bus wet with sweat and looked so lethargic and she was crying to never put her on the bus again!! I spend 3 months to put bussing accomadations for AC on the bus and I had to put a lengthy 30 page documents to prove her sensory is out of wack and she needs An AC on the bus! I presented this with her Pediatrician of the form and she couldn't believe that there's no AC in the bus. So she quoted "I won't even let my dog get in an AC car" Dogs get better privileges than children?! This is insane!!!!! This must be regulated!! But as media goes. They are all waiting for a child or a bus driver to die of dehydration before anything gets proposed! This is what the media needs "let's have the bus driver die of dehydration and get in a car accident resulting the lives of our children" oh they don't care their "special ed" kids. Just chess peices. The sandy hook children. 20 of them had to horribly die because of lack of security! So they open their eyes because of a death. It's everywhere! NYC is not for the poor it's for the rich and the tourist. They can give two shits about us. I lived in MN and by god they give REAL FOOD for pantry! They WANT to help you!! Even when you go to Welfare your welcomed with a smiling face and a dish of lollipops. I tell this story to a native NYer and their jaw drops! I'm sad to say I'm a NYer. I can't wait to get back on my feet and move out of here! They absolutely do not care about our children here!!! Open your eyes people!!REPORT COMMENTS

I agree, I am a bus monitor and when the weather is extremely hot our kids on our buses complain.its not right to have children sit in a car with closed windows but we do it to them on school buses.what is wrong with this picture.granted we have windows that only open half way but the children/driver/monitor can only feel it if you are standing while bus is moving.but we are not allowed to have children standing according to school district policies,so what are we to do?put air conditioning on school buses please our kids are suffering.REPORT COMMENTS

I work as a school bus aide on a bus that transports special needs wheelchair bound students and preschool students. Our ac broke this past fall and my boss and the mechanics have refused to fix it. They have told me ac is not required. I feel so bad for my students. The ones in the wheelchairs have so much supportive padding they are unable to shift to get air. My prek students arw dripping with sweat and their little faces are beet red from the heat. I have a student on my bus who gets seizures if he gets overheated. I brought this up to my boss and i got the same ac is not required. I feel horrible to see my students suffering so badly and there is nothing i can do.REPORT COMMENTS

The regeneration feature on the front engine special needs buses spew out toxic fumes in the driver's cab and make the driver sick. The school district ignores that problem.REPORT COMMENTS

As a school bus attendant in A very large city in Michigan, for the last 15 years, I will tell you that you should be wary of these diesel fumes! The heat on a bus is much different than the heat in your car. The engine is pretty much inside all of our busses, you can feel the heat pouring out! The kids sweat and tend to sleep when it is so hot! Our school dostrict has an extremely large population of special needs children. Only air conditioning we have is on busses that the child's IEP states they are to have air conditioning. All special needs children should have an air conditioned bus. After all all 3 high schools have $1 million dollar artificial football fields. We also have seatbelts on very single bus we have which is over 100. Seatbelts, we were told run about $5,000 per bus. They are not mandatory but they are there if the child wants to use them. I a on my bus almost 7 hours a day sitting in a vinyl seating less. Most children are on the bus for 5 minutes up to 1.5 hours. There are no laws as to how l one a child can be on bus with the exception of Pre-school, they are not to be on a bus longer than one hour. Air conditioning should be mandatory. Heat kills, too!REPORT COMMENTS

School bus drivers need protection from violent students and dangerous routes. School districts should NOT continue to allow violent students to use school buses or taxicabs. Especially when violent students are repeat offenders and adults.REPORT COMMENTS
