This legislation is crucial to assisting a small, but VERY underserved population of disabled americans. Gastroparesis is truly a life-debilitating condition. As a care-giver for someone with this disease, I can assure you that she went from a strong vital individual to a bed-bound invalid... I hope you will be willing to help everyone in this sad position. -

I am signing this for my 29 year old daughter whose gastroparesis appeared suddenly at the age of 17. Prior to a minor stomach bug she was a healthy, 3 sport high schooler. Here she is 12 years later with no more options available to her now than then. She somehow got through college and is now a very dedicated teacher in Harlem. She is one of the lucky ones as she goes from remission to flare ups. No one understands how she works during flares as her symptoms are extreme. She gets through by believing it will eventually pass. This is NOT TRUE of all sufferers. They NEED HELP!!! This is a serious, life threatening illness which gets far too little attention and support. It is beyond belief that it is not considered for disability.REPORT COMMENTS

I was diagnosed with Gastroparesis in 2005 after 6 long months of testing. I had just graduated from nursing school and started my new job. I thank God that I was able to continue working until 2/2008. It was at that time, I had no choice but to resign my nursing position. I was throwing up every 15 minutes, even my own spit made me nauseous. I found an awesome attorney and together with a letter from my long time endocrinologist, I was deemed "unemployable" by their expert witness and awarded back pay and disability. I have had many surgeries and procedures including a gastric electric stimulator and a feeding tube. This is a devastating illness that doesn't discriminate. Our numbers are growing and they are always shrinking as it takes us away from our families, either by hospitalizations, just not being able to get out of bed for days, weeks and months, and also by death. My family has lost our dream home to foreclosure, 2 vehicles, loss of precious family time. I'm very thankful for Medicare and Medicaid. I am able to work, no more than 10-12 hours a week, transporting older citizens to doctors appts. It's not my beloved nursing career, specialized in Elder care, but I'm still able to spend time with them. Please..... make it easier for others with Gastroparesis to get their disability award along with the Medicare insurance we need to keep us alive.REPORT COMMENTS
