I have experienced this kind of grief as well, and didn't get any time off work other than what I took out of my own sick and vacation time. It's debilitating. No one, and I mean no one, is going to be a productive contributor at work after 3 days. Grieving IS a serious health condition, both physically and mentally. It should be covered by FMLA for spouses and all other family. Anyone who's gone through it would agree.

I too, was widowed at 34, with two small children. Anyone who has experienced this know that the recovery time is long and difficult. We give women months of leave after having a baby, why is death not given the same respect as life?!

I am a widow who lost her husband suddenly in a motorcycle accident. I was no where ready to plan a funeral, let alone work in three daya following his death. I literally sat and stared at the wall in shock for months. It is necessary for people to grieve following a spouse's loss and could be dangerous if not given more than 3 days off work. Please consider this and include additional days for bereavement. I do find it interesting that fathers have FLMA when thier children are born but when a spouse passes away it is not looked at as a life changing event requiring time off.

I lost my 33 yr old wife following the delivery of our first child. It is horrible. Widows and Widowers should without question be entitled to FMLA leave. Thanks for all of your support and efforts in helping those in the future that are affected by such a sudden, unexpected tragedy.
