Everyone deserves that second chance I feel like locking people up and throwing away the key can be very harsh especially on some of the inmates that probably didn't even do the crime or maybe it was just a mistake I wish these people realize that everyone makes mistakes -

I have a family member serving 20 years over a mistake that was done, where NOBODY was hurt either KILLED. He is a first time convict and 20 years is just too long to be away from families. There are a lot of first time offenders that are doing really well staying out of trouble just trying to do their time and come out and be a well functioning adult and a member of the society. You put people in prison for murder for short times the other offense and first time people should be given 65% off there time. The judge should only be allow two terms and that is 50 year for second degree assault and armed criminal action and a guy using drugs rolls over on his infant while the infant in bed with him and smothers the baby to death gets 120 days and that's justice.REPORT COMMENTS

My brother is currently serving a life sentence due to the felony murder rule. Although he participated in the act of burglary he did not commit murder and now he has a life sentence on 2nd degree murder charges. This is not fair to him or his family. Reduce 85% for first time violent offender/first strike to a lower percentage. Allow inmates to receive good time credits for participating in school and other activities. My husband received his first strike at the age of 29 and he has never had a history of being violent. Unfortunately, we had to go a route in accepting a plea bargain to avoid a life sentence on his case in which there was identity issues. Please consider a lower percentage for first time violent offenders, even if the inmates have to work for it, this is a great start to start making people believe that they can change and most importantly show that they can be giving a second chance.
