My son is a first time violent offender and he's not even violent. He got 13yrs. He's never been to prison. This is first time. He's been in Missouri prison since 2013. So he's still got a lot more time to go. He's got young kids that will be grown and out of school by the time he gets out. Please he deserves a second chance. -

I've got a son 18 years old he entered the prison because he made a bad decision. I and the family were devastated when we heard the verdict. I've always thought the sentence too extreme for him. He's doing 10 years for his first time offense. He'll be done with his sentence in 2012. He received his GED reads and educates himself everyday. I write him every week. He even completed a trade program now that he's taken every course in the prison all he does is reads what they will allow him to read. He sends me everything he's completed and tells me most of what he learns. It's what he doesn't tell me he learns that bothers me. He's just a boy. And he wasn't that bad. But then I think to myself every mother would feel like this. Has this been good for my boy "YES". But now I'm worried he'll get used to prison life more than living a normal civil life on the outside seeings he's never really seen what life could be like as a young adult on the outside. Please think about the families. This would be right to do I think in most casesREPORT COMMENTS

I received 15years in Missouri in 1997 for a robbery I committed. I done 13.9 yrs for it after all was said & done.I tried to get any type of vocational schooling before my release but was denied every time because of over crowded prisons. I've been out since 2010 no thanks to our great system. The Modoc is all about $ they want you to come back it's all about job security nothing else. In order to keep a person out you gotta teach them a trade skill Missouri's system don't do that cause they want you to fail so they will always have job security.REPORT COMMENTS

Prisoners, who have been defined as being violent, as a result of a first time violent offense, leading to a life and LWOP sentences, should be allowed a second chance at freedom. If they are first time offenders of a fatality, had no prior involvement with the law, has had sufficient education, will have meaningful employment and a place to reside upon release, has NO prior history of any violent behaviors prior to the one serious offense leading to his or her, first and only incarceration and was under the age of 25 when committing the first and only offense. There are many factors resulting in crime and few people tend to understand or even try to understand the reasons behind many offenses. Many individuals who offend, have no family, lack emotional support, have previous traumatic issues as children never disclosed, under enormous stress resulting from many simultaneous and painful dynamics. GOD forgave the Moses, King David and the Apostle Paul, all murderers, and HE used them in a BIG way. Bible Scriptures confirm that. The Bible states in , "....Anyone who says they love God, whom they cannot see. Yet, hate their brothers and sisters, is a liar...." 1 John 4:20REPORT COMMENTS

My son is losing his entire youth over a guy who handed out meth to young kids and then when a mother turned him in on crimestoppers the Santa Clara County Sheriifs dept raided him and then left him in his place to convict 5-6 young people that were sucked into his web. The dealer has been left out, and by the way he is a sex offender who raped an 11yr old in a different state. Has more charges then I have ever seen but never goes to jail. 2nd prison term of my sons when he returned to get his fathers tools that were left there. Not at all fair when the parents all tried to help put the scumbag away. My son was charged with robbery but didn't take anything and never got his tools back. Just got 7yrs. He may be a different person after all this and prison is not what he needed. Whats wrong with this picture?REPORT COMMENTS

I totally agree that first time offenders deserve a second chance. These young men are serving life sentences for things they did when very young. The thing is these men would never reoffend if given a second chance. Their is also a percentage of inmates that are mentally ill and were not on their medication at the time of the crime. This is a crime on humanity to not give these people a second chance. We must give these inmates a chance .HopeREPORT COMMENTS

I believe if a 1time violent offender has proven his self to be 97% rvr free of time served. and has shown or is willing to get ged if available he/she should be given another chance after serving at least 50-65% with them knowing if they become a repeated offender that they will serve day for day.REPORT COMMENTS

I have a female family member in a prison camp for a white collar crime. Her first offense & she got 6 yrs. No excuses, she broke the law but as they continue to release violent offenders such as some drug offenders & terrorists I can't understand why so many non-violent inmates couldn't be released to house arrest with ankle monitor. As I visited her recently I saw so many mothers & grandmothers locked up that broke laws but are not a danger to the community.REPORT COMMENTS
