In my 20s I was an idiot and got into a lot of trouble. Now in my 40s with a Masters Degree I can not get a job in my field because I cannot get a state license to practice psychology. 17 years ago I screwed up, young and dumb is not an excuse but we all age and grow wiser. I did not use the revolving door of prison, I turned my life around.REPORT COMMENTS

After 14 years my non-violent past still haunts me in everyday life even though I have paid my debts, both physically and financially. I continue to work on ways to improve myself daily in an effort to become a productive member of society however, society will not allow me to.REPORT COMMENTS

I have a misdemeanor assault conviction that is seven years old. I have recently had to leave my job and have found getting a new one extremely difficult because of this misdemeanor. I am a professional with a license that is not directly affected by the conviction. Despite a good work history with above average references, and a generally competitive skill set, work is proving very difficult to obtain. My humiliation about this most unfortunate incident makes it difficult for me to self advocate, and there are days I want to completely give up as going to interviews, and being told what an impressive resume I have, then being offered work, only to have that offer withdrawn when the background check is done. I've tried speaking with hiring manager, HR staff, and fillinf out applications only for those employers who ask about felony convictions (and not misdemeanors) or those who ask about convictions ONLY in hte past seven years. It is still a major difficulty. There must be a better avenue for those of us who, because of an acute mental health episode, have had a once in a lifetime encounter with the law that we are later unable to remove. Many states offer options to make it easier following a period of time and effort, but Virginia seems to feel that once a mistake has been made, it is noteworthy for life. Need this be, in order for the general public to be safe and secure? Does lifelong punishment make sense in a humane society? I regret this situation, and wonder how exactly, I am to move forward with living a life that is purposeful and useful.REPORT COMMENTS

Even if the crime is a non-violent felony, the mandatory sentences are severe and the person convicted pays for a lifetime. So does the family.REPORT COMMENTS

Some of us were convicted as a consequence of not telling on another and guilt by association of a non violent felony. As the price of groceries becomes unbareable for my family of five, meanwhile I can't own a simple 22 caliber rifle to feed my family, something must giveREPORT COMMENTS

As a social worker, I cannot condone a government that willfully impeades the optimal social functioning of citizens that have paid their debt to society. It is difficult not to think that there are political and financial incentives to create an environment that encourages recidivism in order to cash in on the criminal justice system.REPORT COMMENTS

You know they call jails and prisons institutions while claiming they are meant to rehabilitate the offender. Then claim the citizen is forever branded and outcast without any government benifit other than an employer tax cut lol. That's not rehabilitative it places constraints and limitations upon improvished miseducated or unfortunate Americans and it should no longer be tolorated by any American because any one of us can become the next accused!REPORT COMMENTS
