It's time for the US courts to uphold our 4th Amendment rights. Lethal force has always been dictated as an action of LAST resort and only in life threatening situations. Our postal service, utility workers and delivery drivers come into contact daily with dogs and are able to deal with them without resorting to lethal force. These officers are sworn to uphold our laws and to protect and serve the citizens. What is happening is they are violating our rights, destroying our pets in our own yards and homes. Complete and total lack of accountability and common sense.

As an owner of a non-aggressive, but territorial dog, I now fear that if an officer of the law were to ever enter my residence or property, my dog would be killed for simply barking/challenging. Too many people (even outside law enforcement) do not understand how to interpret canine body language and would consider non-aggressive actions as aggressive. Law enforcement should, first and foremost, be taught how to distinguish between an aggressive dog and a territorial one. They should also be trained to handle aggressive dogs using non-lethal force. The very MOST force an officer should be using on a canine is a tazer or tranquilizer gun. Bullets that are recklessly strewn can go astray and kill a child or adult too. It's not just our beloved family pets that need protection and safety!

After becoming aware of the horrible incidents in Austin and Birmingham within the past couple of weeks.. and so many others that I have heard about since these two beloved pets lost their lives for no reason, I am absolutely certain that our police officers... our protectors, must be trained in how to evaluate a dog's mood so they can address the situation appropriately. I can think of no situation where a police officer should have the right to execute a pet with his firearm. There needs to be stiff punishment when anyone shoots a pet, police officers included.

Police should be educated that not all dogs are going to bite. If you are not there answering a violent crime there is very little reason to kill a beloved pet. When any law enforcement personal gets near my dogs I immediately say let me put them up.

This is not something that is often addressed in police academy and not every officer has the knowledge or experience to understand canine behavior. The result is the unnecessary death of beloved family pets, the danger of discharging a weapon in public and a poor public image of law enforcement in general.

I find it intollerable that law enforcement has not had the necessary training to handle situations involving animals. Further on many occasions it seems completely barbaric as some of the incidents involved error, shooting animals in cages or were restrained. Law enforcement as well as citizens should be held responsible for inflicting injury and taking the lives of animals.

our pets are like our children allowing this to continue will likely case civil uprisings against police officers and that is also unacceptable.

Toomuch of these so called "Authority Figures" hiding behind the gun and badge. I feel they are weak and take advantage of their "Status" by shootings dogs (which could be avoided if they are TRAINED in how to handle the situation) to show their manhood. In my opinion, every officer that is guilty of this should be shot themselves.

I've seen more than my fair share of stories from families who had their dog taken from them by excessive police force via a gun. I hope you will strongly consider this. Ask yourself: What harm could possibly come out of it? At least this way, proper training could educate them and aid in better judgement when it comes to animals.

Postmen, pool cleaners, electric meter readers have gotten training or have dealt in non lethal ways with dogs - there needs to be training for Police Officers.

It is bewildering to me that this still happens at all. Training, common sense, and compassion for living things should be a prerequisite for anybody serving the public -- especially while armed.
