The 5th and 14th Amendments assure us that no person shall bve deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law. Yet law enforcement officers routinely view a companion animal as nothign but an impedimant to be dispatched in the quickest method possible. This deprives a citizen of their unique and irreplaceable property. If there is a non-lethal option, police should be compelled to use it, and if lethal force IS used, an inquiry akin to one the follows a fatal shooting of a human should follow. Those who violate citizens' rights without justification and without seeking alternative methods must be punished, up to and including with prison time.

Police use animals to help them fight crime then turn around and kill them at no provocation...doesn't make sense and it's got to STOP! Animals are family members!!

There are too many reports of officers getting away with shooting non-aggressive dogs simply for being dogs, barking, approaching etc. This has to stop before owners start protecting their pets at risk of their own life!

This epidemic must stop. My husband is a paramedic and they handle situations like this without lethal force. I am signing this for my pit mix, blue heeler, and pit bull. I want to know that they are safe when I cannot protect them. I'm also signing in memory of the many senseless and unjustified killing of innocent animals with souls (RIP Cisco and many others).

The post office has been able to cut bad interactions with dog to a minimum with training. Why can't police, who carry lethal weaponry do the same instead of having the mindset that it's acceptable to pull their guns in start shooting in residential areas for no other reason than a dog was investigating what they are doing?

some of these crazy cops in Waynesboro, Va. don't deserve to own a gun, much less have the authority to use one on the job. Something needs to be done. If a person, other than a police, shot or beat to death an animal, they would lose the right to own a gun. What is the difference? These law inforcers need to think before taking action!

Evil only prevails when good men do nothing..Please hear our voices and help us save our family pets and educate government workers so we as citizens of our states may stand united together to serve and protect each other and support the local police departments. Acts of this kind has happened too often, and seems that those involved are not properly punished..if a pet were to be killed by a citizen, they would be tried, fined and perhaps sentenced to jail..how can government officials be exempt from such an needless act? Please help and stop this..Thank you.

This will help to decrease the liability for each city/state. There is no reason that representatives of the city/state shouldn't be trained to decrease liability when handling domestic situations regardless of the life involved.

The senseless killing of our family members has got to stop. The police are nothing less than murderers in the way they handle solving a pet issue. They need training and they need to be punished for their careless actions.
