Statistics show that marijuana usage is second to only alcohol. So let's break down the comparison of the two. 1) Alcohol is a highly addictive drug, where marijuana is the least addictive drug. 2) Alcoholism is a nationwide epidemic and puts a huge strain on the healthcare and economic system. A study in 2005 showed of the 3.9 million people that received treatment for substance abuse, 2.5 million were for alcohol abuse. Alcoholics can received disability benefits due to the fact that they cannot function. Marijuana users can function even under the influence, they are not 30 or 40 somethings sitting in their parents' basement smoking marijuana all day unemployed because they cannot get out of bed. 3) Alcohol over usage causes more damage to the human body than cigarettes and much more than marijuana. Alcohol over usage can cause severe, irreversible damage to the liver, pancreas, heart, stomach, brain and nervous system. Alcohol is one of the hardest substances for the human body to metabolize, that is why the effects of alcohol last longer than any other drug out there. 4) Alcohol influenced crimes versus marijuana influenced crimes are a no brainer. People under the influence of alcohol are 20-30 times more likely to commit a crime than people under the influence of marijuana some studies have shown. 5) Alcohol is contributed to 3 times more vehicular accidents than marijuana. 6) Marijuana has more scientifically proven benefits to the human body than alcohol casual use. 7) It is virtually impossible to overdose with marijuana. Where as with alcohol and any other drug out there you can overdose on any of them. In summary, there is much research out there showing the pros and cons of marijuana versus alcohol. There are more cons with alcohol usage than marijuana and the are more pros with marijuana usage than alcohol usage. Yet, even though there are these studies out there, the Federal government turns a blind eye to the issues with alcohol and focuses on a medically beneficial drug, whether used strictly for medicinal purposes or recreational purposes. So why does the Federal government not seriously look at legalizing marijuana? Out of all the illegal drugs out there, marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug and the number one imported drug in the U.S. The U.S. government just sees money for the DOJ, that is also why marijuana is a Class I drug than a lower class. The DEA receives more federal money for busts of higher class drugs. So even though marijuana does not pose the dangers of LSD and PCP it is classed with them, but yet meth, heroine and cocaine are lower class drugs because those drugs are not imported as much as marijuana. So why won't the U.S. Congress seriously put to vote the legalization of marijuana? It all comes down to lobbyist and money, the U.S. government feels they make more money by keeping it illegal than legalizing marijuana and taxing it heavily. Marijuana is the LEAST harmful drug that we have plus it is a miracle drug for so many illnesses. Marijuana can help Mental Illnesses, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, Cancer, Crohn's Disease, Alzheimer's, Arthritis, Asthma, Chronic pain, Epilepsy, and Glaucoma to name a few. There are more side effects from Viagra compared to Marijuana. If Marijuana is illegal than Alcohol should be illegal, it causes SO MANY problems! Tobacco should be illegal, Cigarettes should be illegal, and Synthetic Heroin (Opioid Painkillers) should be illegal. Plus the Marijuana industry could get our country out of debt.
