Feels like just another law Washington has not upheld. Very sad to be left thinking it was convenient for Washington to do this instead of cutting back spending.REPORT COMMENTS

I was a Civil Servant for 37 years, the last 25 as a secretary to USAF general officers (not the easiest of jobs!) -- Upon retirement, I worked an additional 12 years' part time to gain the 40 hours required for SS -- only to have that benefit cut -- my benefit does not even cover the cost of Part B because of the WEP/GPO -- in my case, a double penalty -- because my benefit does not Cover Part B, I am being charged 110.50 for Medicare Part B this year -- actually a double penalty!!!! I am pursuing this with my local congressman.REPORT COMMENTS

What is wrong with our system that denies us our rightfully earned Social Security that I paid into fully for 20 years and beyond through side jobs. I want my full earned benefits. Give it back, I am just plain disgusted with this law. Repeal the GPO now.REPORT COMMENTS

The WEP/GPO provisions are equivalent to taxing a minority of the working population unfairly. If I had worked for AT&T for 32 years, I would have a good retirement, and be able to collect Social Security without a penalty. If I had started teaching right out of college and taught for 32 years, I would be able to retire with a good pension at 55 years of age FOR LIFE. Because I changed professions and worked 22 years for AT&T, and have now worked for 12 years as a teacher, I will be penalized for up to 40% of my Social Security benefits. I would love to know how many citizens are being unfairly 'taxed' by these provisions. It is my understanding that only 14 states still have these penalties. Why isn't there a class action suit against the states who still penalize their public servants with these provisions?REPORT COMMENTS

I have worked in the private sector for 30 years and contributed all quarters into social security, but becuase my last 10 years of work history is in the public sector I am penalized. My husband has worked his whole life in the private sector & the spousal benefits are also affected! How is this fair? Citizens should be entitled to what they have put into the system. How is it different for individuals collecting several pensions? To call it "double dipping" is obsurd! The pension I will collect after my 10 yrs of public sector service as an administrative assistant is below the national poverty level! PLease reconsider for the hard working citizens of Massachusetts! It also baffles me that social security is a federal plan yet our state can govern how we receive our federal monies due us!REPORT COMMENTS

I taught for 33 years. I worked part time and paid S.S. before I taught accumulating over 40 quarters. I am penalized by WEP and will be penalized again by GPO from my wife's 30 years of paying S.S.REPORT COMMENTS

GPO is grossly unfair to those of us who worked and paid into social security for many years and then spent a period of time working in government positions. The WORST part is that nobody ever explained the existence of GPO (or WEP)when we were hired into those government positions. For many of us, the first we hear of it is when the time approaches for retirement!REPORT COMMENTS

Billions for Wall Street, bailouts for GM and Chrysler yet pennies for the public servants who worked in government, taught in the schools, fought the fires and maintained the peace. Come on Congress, You are better than this. Its time to repeal the pension offset.REPORT COMMENTS

I am a retired California teacher. My late / ex husband (we were married for 17 years) served active duty in Army Aviation in Viet Nam - during which time we were married with 2 young children. I do not get his social security because of the WEP/GPO. Had I retired from private business, NO PROBLEM ! Where is the fairness here. I am a low end retiree --- I was an outstanding classroom teacher serving over 700 children and their families - until health issues caused me to retire early. Is this how you take care of Veteran's families ?? I served active duty on the home front !! Is this how you intend to attract the brightest and best to teach our youth ?? Billions are spent on the pentagon budget --- on a bigger war machine. Billions are spent on bailing out financial sector and auto industries.... all well and good..... AND . . . what about paying folks the money they and their spouses paid into Social Security. It's time to take care of families of Vets.. It's time to pay folks the money they and their spouses earned. It's time to bring some fairness to this issue by repealing the WEP / GPO. Sincerely, Marcela Ries - Ukiah CaliforniaREPORT COMMENTS
