WEP and GPO are unfair and are not typically disclosed to or are out of control of new employees. If we paid fully into social security, we deserve full benefits.Nov 10th, 2010Someone from San Jose, CA signed.

I worked for 30+ years as a teacher and at extra jobs to support my family. When I retired they took 50% of my social security from me. And I have no rights to my wifes SS. Leave it to Washington...unresponsive as usual.REPORT COMMENTS

Most of us who have worked as state employees did not make a very large salary to start with, therefore our state pension, based on our salary, is not enough to live on. Those of us who also worked in a job where we contributed to social security should not have our social security pensions reduced because of our state pensions. I will have contributed to social security for over 15 years, yet will only end up with a couple of hundred dollars per month of social security benefits when I retire. This seems terribly unfair.REPORT COMMENTS

I have taught for over 38 years. Worked several extra jobs to support my family and payed into social security. My pension is small and I can not live on it. I still work and pay into social security with no hopes of recouping much of what I contribute. The offset law dooms me to a senior life of poverty even though I worked all my life and have met my responsibilities. What a poor commentary to encourage young people to go into teaching and public service. Public servants could have made better money in the private sector but chose to serve. This is how they are rewarded? We only ask for that which we earned and deserve. It's time to repeal the offset law and treat public servants with respect and honor.REPORT COMMENTS

congress must do and take action to do whats equitable and just. this penalty is creating lack of trust in our law makers for people that served the public,as we should do. i am not asking for a handout only what we earned 40 quarters back then.why two thirds penalty?would you like a two thirds penalty for being a congress person or senator? think about it! please do what is only fair for those being penalized by the gpo/wep and repeal it.. thank you cordially mr m garza jrREPORT COMMENTS

Not only is this ignorant law unfair, it penalises the ederly and anyone who dedicated their life to educating others. While our government officials vote themselves better benifits and larger incomes in positions that were originally non-paying positions to keep cost down is now a joke and a slap in the face to people who actually work for a living. Our government has made a mockery out of everything our forefathers fought for and now everyone suffers needlessly. If our officials spent half their time fixing the real problems instead of decimating this countries working class. How about a percentage tax onevery dollar earned across the board nomatter whoyou are or how much you make, everyone pays the same, everyone shares the same burden, every wins. Sounds simple, it is. Plenty of tax income for evreything including education, medical and just about any other area that is now being cut by our offials who's only real concern is themselves.REPORT COMMENTS

I can relate so well to many of the posted comments. I also had a short career later in life with a public university. The person who recruited me emphasized that I would be vested in the state teachers pension after five years employment. At No Time was I told about social security offsets or I would never have left my then current position in the private sector. The GPO and WEP are simply unfair...especially to those who are widowed as GPO is 66% offset while WEP is only 50%. Who came up with that bright formula???REPORT COMMENTS

Why is this not a class action lawsuit already? I have mailings from the SSA spanning more than two decades stating my SS retirement projection - and no mention of WEP/GPA reduction! Those letters were false and deceptive. Now I find I will be penalized for entering public service in the latter part of my career.REPORT COMMENTS

Why are foreigners who become naturalized citizens treated better than the people who this unfair law affects? Afterall, if you earn pension benefits in another country but have not paid into social security on those earnings and then become a naturalized citizen here earning 40 quarters of social security credit you get a benefit check. Somehow, that strikes me as extremely unfair. This whole law should be repealed and an apology issued to those impoverished retirees who it has hurt.REPORT COMMENTS

This repeal needs to finally get done!! I voted for President Obama who pledged to NEA to support this repeal. I am married to a disabled Vietnam veteran. I am a retired educator, who had earned over 40 SS. credits, in the private sector prior to becoming an educator. My social security benefits are reduced by 40% of my very low pension after a very short teaching career. Where is the fairness in Social Security for the elderly who were promised to have this for the rest of their lives? Its grossly unfair!! I have signed this petition for the past 10 years. How many more will it take - enough already!! Let this bill pass!! REPEAL H.R.235 now!!!REPORT COMMENTS
