It is not fair to judge teachers like that. They do an exceptional job even with the low students. Some students don't test well and some choose to xmas tree a test and the teacher should not be punished. They teach it but it is up to the students to learn it.Apr 2nd, 2010Someone from Lutz, FL writes:
If this bill passes, I fear for the future education of my child and for the great teachers we still have left in the state of FloridaREPORT COMMENTS

I think that this will kill education on both the teacher and the students, education should come first for our children.REPORT COMMENTS

This is not just about "making gains" when you tie it to teacher pay. Every school has a different population. So one teacher should be penalized because s/he can't go home with the kids and make sure they get a good night rest, proper nutrition, and solid study habits? Also, what about the teacher who teaches advanced kids - who offer their own challenges to instruction. How do you show gains on a kid who is near the upper level of test scores? What about the students who get tested and come out slow learners? How do you show gains on a child who it has been proven lacks the ability to make gains - usually due to memory or processing issues? Forget all of that and ask - do politicians get salary packages based on their approval ratings? No... all based on a one day election - which for some is strictly based on how much money is thrown at the campaign. If Florida has had to cut back on the FCAT due to financial constraints, how can we afford to tie anything to test results? You want to undo class-size? Fine, we're used to teaching 39 kids in an elementary classroom. You want to take away funding for resources? Fine, we're used to teaching with nothing. But to attack teachers financially is just wrong...REPORT COMMENTS

I wonder how many FL legislators have taught in a public classroom. Do they not understand that this bill is unjust and unfair for students and all staff in FL public schools? How will these learning gains be measured? Now that teachers are teaching to ALL children in a mainstream classroom, how do you account for the students with learning disabilities and those who speak English as a second language? Furthermore, no two children come from identical backgrounds and households. If you are teaching in a school with a high ESL population and a high number of students on free and reduced lunch, most of these students will be concerned with getting their basic needs met first before they can learn. Many students lack the basic necessities at home and school is their only secure, nurturing environment. Students SHOULD make gains and have goals they are trying to attain, but students cannot have identical realistic goals. A student with a 70 IQ struggling with short-term memory, and reading emergent literature, will have a very different end-of-the-year goal in reading; unlike a classmate with a 120 IQ and strong short-term memory, whom starts the year off reading beginner chapter books. So, if these two students do not reach the same achievement level, then the teacher's pay will be adjusted? And, how do you consider the pay for the non-instructional personnel? Will a P.E. coach or art teacher take a pay cut if the majority of his/her students perform poorly on a test? I just don't understand the legislators' logic with this bill.REPORT COMMENTS
