First Do No Harm: The DEA targets Physicians who treat their patients pain.

There are 2 sides of this. First is the person who seeks care and compassion. Is not the government forcing physicians to act against the oath they take? I can understand their fear. With that why do they not fight back themselves against this injustice? Then there is the patient. In MOST cases they arrive with a legitimate reason with pain as the factor for their appointment. No one WANTS to have pain or live with it. Those seeking to find the cause and relief from the pain have that right as given to us as human beings and citizens. If procedure after procedure has failed even after surgical intervention then with the option of narcotic based medicine an option which in most cases does impact the pain to a level of continuing their life as being productive does this have to be taken away from us? Who gave the government the RIGHT by law to say NO to our God given decisions of our own body? This needs attention and needs it NOW. There is something very suspicious about this dilemma. If any of this has come about from the top from personal experiences or tragedies or even from lobbying that started in such a manner then that is unfair. Most of us are good people wanting to work with a physician for this relief of unrelenting pain. I never want to say, Walk a mile in our shoes, since most of us would not want that even for those behind these laws that create more pain and havoc in our life's. -

I'm suffering from pain I never asked for. I do not drink, smoke or do illicit drugs. I vote every election. I was a very active tax paying citizen who is now "labeled" as a drug seeking junkie.I do not understand why people would abuse pain medications, I've never felt a "buzz" or "high" from them, simply relief, I can function, live not just exist. This so called "war on drugs" is as ridiculous as the war we have NO business in. It's killing good people who just cannot take another day of excruciating pain, have no hope, no options but to end their life, Pain medication is equally as necessary as my blood pressure and thyroid meds, Suffering with fibromyalgia, a crushed clavicle (from dropping dead 36 days after my only beloved child was killed in a car accident... deep grief I forgot I have heart disease and literally dropped dead-now I wish no one had found me because the broken bones are not repairable and since then I was hit by a car walking in a parking lot, last year I was in a car accident that broke my back, eight days in ICU and six months in a body cast.I never knew anything about about anti-inflammatory drug allergies were a sign of addiction until I read this, a medication called zannaflex caused my throat to close and my tongue swell (I could easily take it to commit suicide) I cannot tolerate any form of naproxin I found out only by taking an OTC for allergies while visiting my sister, I'm not one to just take a pill, I've had severe allergic reactions while in the hospital at age four. I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired, I don;t like going to the doctor and have a phobia of hospitals. I've been humiliated by a pharmacist (an impaired one who is now in jail for stealing narcotics) cussed out and threatened by a PA who I informed I expect any and all licensed health care professionals to take my health care as seriously and respectfully as I do. America has turned into anything but "free" country. It's a shame that erectile dysfunction is more important than pain and suffering. What kind of society puts a man's ***** ability to have sex more important to treat than those of us who can't even have a sex life due to debilitating pain? I wish I did not NEED medication, it's NOT a want or desire any more than medications required for heart, thyroid or liver disease, I simply want to live without suffering. In a 'free" country, as a voting tax paying citizen with no criminal record. why am I restricted from living free of pain and suffering? Why are people suffering when there are medications to reduce the level to tolerable? Why would any society allow any being to suffer? I contemplate ending it all ... I just can't take much more and it seems that's the only option. I'm too old and too sick to seek illicit drugs plus I have a huge fear of jail or I would try marijuana. I wish it was legal here, I do have many friends in California that use it instead of opiates which my body has become dependent taken only as directed ..REPORT COMMENTS

Diagnosed bipolar in 1994 and take 5 powerfull meds to maintain mental stability. Two weeks ago I pinched a C7 nerve and experienced severe pain in right shoulder, upper arm and numbness in little and ring fingers. Dr. Would not prescribe an opioid due to bipolar disorder. He chose Tramadol, Neurontin and Prednisone . All three were added to current psychiatric meds. The side effects of Prednisone kicked me into mania, Tramadol slowed metabolism, caused constipation and dehydration, Neurontin triggered depressive states and this all threw off my mental balance leading to the pain becoming more severe, leading to more visits to my Psychiatrist who adjusted her meds and more visits to my Primary Care MD who adjusted his meds and then he referred me to a pain management clinic that performed avsubdural under short term anesthesia which led to a 12 hour sleep which led to all of these meds getting taken off scheduled times. So because my Primary Care doctor did not choose a simple 2 week course of Vicodin to eliminate the pain so that physical therapy could be used to strengthen muscle support and thus avoiding steroids and mania and Neurontin and depression and Tramadol and its SSRI side effects and pseudo opiod effects just to avoid writing one opiod scheduled med I have suffered weeks of mental anguish, extreme pain, side effects from Prednisone that have weakened my immune system, an infection following the subdural and three individual doctors none of whom consulted with any other. This must be malpractice or at least gross negligence. My new goal is to NEVER SEE A DOCTGOR UNLESS I CAN BE HOSPITALIZED IMMEDIATELY. The current state of pain management is as barbaric as using leeches in centuries past. At 62, after 20 years struggling to maintain my mental health it is clear that pain of any severity that is not the result of a terminal illness is seen as a marginals symptom warranting minimal treatment. My vet treats my dog's pain with more concern. Why? This American medical system's opiod hysteria can only be justified as a means of maintaining the illegal drug trade. THE DEA HAS NO MEDICAL ROLE IN THE SCIENCE OF MEDICINE. The DEA's ability to apply criminal statutes to the practice of medicine in the area of pain management, if applied to anesthesiology resulting in wakefulness during surgery, conscious pain during surgery, would show exactly how barbaric the role of the DEA has become. American Medicine has chosen to treat all pain symptoms and patients as addicts first and foremost forcing doctors to use less effective, more expensive and much riskier treatment protocols...none of which is based on medical research. Millions of us live with excruciating pain every day while seeing multitudes of doctors day after day all of whom every single time explain why they WILL NOT ELIMINATE OUR PAIN EVEN FOR A FEW WEEKS.....day after week after month the people continue to feel the need to explain to us why theREPORT COMMENTS

It is an atrocity how patients are treated in this area. Some doctors will allow their patients to go through withdrawal without any assistance even though there are life threatening consequences to doing this, e.g. seizures, etc. It's being done and the DEA is to blame. As I read all the many pleas for help, ut saddens and outrages me that nobody is doing anything to help all of us who have been thrown into a world of pain and suffering. Pain so bad most of us beg God to take us. Last I checked we lived in America, where we have rights. We have the right to be treated with dignity. We have the right to be treated by a medical doctor, someone who spent many years going to a college to get a degree to help those who suffer from conditions that cause excruciating pain, pain so bad it consumes our lives night and day, everyday. Pain so bad we have great difficulty doing normal day to day functions, such as taking care of our kids, our homes, some who work, taking a shower, driving, etc. Most of us have tried every option out there such as physical therapy, injections, surgery to correct the pain, being told by surgeons it would help relieve the pain, chiropractic adjustments, accupuncture, the list is endless. Then we were given opiods to try to relieve the pain. It worked. It brought our pain from over a ten down to a level that was manageable. We started to have a life again.. We were able to take care of our kids, vaccum our homes, maybe go food shopping, or cook dinner, and so many other tasks that the pain ripped away from us. You see, we don't get high after being on these opiods for years, yes our bodies get use to the meds and we become dependent on them. .We aren't drug addicts that crave a fix to get high. We are good, honest citizens of this country who, thru no fault of our own and thru no choice of our own, have medical conditions that induce severe, excruciating pain upon us. How dare the DEA stick their noses into the medical field and into the treatment of legit pain patients. We are being mistreated by our pain doctors and pharmacies because of the fear the DEA has put into them. Woukd they think about stopping a heart patients meds or someone who suffers from lung disease or any other condition? NO THEY WOULDN'T! How can our government allow this to continue? This coukd be you one day, or your loved one who is suffering in pain. Maybe then you will get it and do something. I am ashamed to be a citizen of this country. How dare you throw all of us who are legit patients, undergoing drug tests monthly like some junkie off the streets, having to bring our meds in for pill counts like some child being punished, how dare you throw us into a world of unneccessary pain and suffering!! Who is in charge of this nightmare?? I've been contacting lawyers and looking into a lawsuit. I am going after the DEA and every single one of youin our government who are allowing me to be mistreated and taking away meds I need to survive. This is a violation of my rights! Not only have my meds been cut back drastically, I now suffer from depression, something I never had. I have anxiety attacks, something I never had. I'm a single mom and on perm. disability, I have great difficulty even cooking a meal, among other things.REPORT COMMENTS

For the last decade, I have tremendously suffered from ongoing chronic pain, primarily from the insidious disease, Fibromyalgia. You should know that without the doctor supervised pain management I have had, I would NOT be able to work as a teacher to support myself and family, nor be able to function in life and be an active part of society, volunteering, and enjoying my life. Before my current pain management program, I tried every possible non drug medical approach, integrated medicine, you name it, years of trying to deal with chronic pain. The pain is severe, and having to face a life with no relief is no quality life, and frankly, I would not desire to continue my life in such excruciating pain and 24/7/365 suffering. I much rather be labeled a "functioning addict," than to live a life of chronic pain without effective pain management. There are millions of citizens who suffer and rely on common sense pain management programs to insure their quality of life is live able. I pray you hear and listen to our pleas to treat long time chronic pain sufferers fairly. Thank you, Star Ali Mistriel, Citizen, Parent, Educator, VolunteerREPORT COMMENTS

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 12+ years ago. While still in my hometown of L.A., CA, I was well taken care of by my pain mgmt. doctors, and when I moved to Long Island, NY it took me several months to find a doctor who would really help me with the severe & constant pain I had been living with. One of those IDIOT doctors said that there was no such thing as fibro, that I was just depressed... what an*****he was! I finally did find a doctor who was quite good and did not seem to be deterred by the new uptight status that the DEA was spreading. However, that only lasted a couple of years, and my last doctor there told me he would not risk his license that took him 20 years to get when he came to NY from India. NO help to me though, right?! I then moved to Florida almost 2 years ago and discovered that the stinking DEA had completely destroyed the health care system as far as sick people who were in extreme pain were concerned. It took me almost a year to find a REAL pain mgmt. doctor who would prescribe the medication I needed... BUT, what about the pharmacies that are no longer dispensing "controlled substances" any longer! Way fewer doctors will still help their patients, and WAY fewer pharmacies will fill their prescriptions! This is a travesty, a sin, complete and utter BS!! Things must be changed here in FL and all over the country, for all us poor souls who suffer each and every minute of each and every day! I am so glad I found this petition when I did a google search! I will do most anything to change this injustice, and will start by forwarding this petition to everyone I know, and pray they will all pass it on! God Bless Us All~REPORT COMMENTS

My pain is not excruciating, but it is constant. When you are in constant pain, even at low levels, it becomes impossible to function and live life normally. It gets to the point that you cannot think, talk or even eat. I finally found a GOOD physician who combines several types of therapy, injections and low doses of pain medications and I can actually function and WORK again. I follow the rules, I don't abuse my meds & I do not rely on them alone for relief, but I am treated and am made to feel like a criminal, thief and addict when I walk into a pharmacy. There is clearly a problem that needs to be addressed, but it's more difficult for legitimate patients who obey the laws to get medications than it is for abusers who are still getting them on the streets.
