    I understand addiction. I work in the field of addiction. The Opiod problem is real, and it kills people. However, people living with chronic pain need to be treated for chronic pain. Sometimes, NSAIDS just don't work for people, especially, if one has EDS. It is documented. It is really sad that EDS patients have to suffer because drug addicts are ruining their chance to be treated for pain. You can urine test these patients, there are ways to differienciate between drug addicts and people who really are coping with daily chronic pain. It's a team approach. Apparently, these people trying to limit pain medications, don't have a loved one that has chronic pain. They know not the suffering. It's like they are trying to kill a fly with a hatchet.

    Dear Decision Maker: In the current political climate, more and more physicians are afraid to treat patients who suffer from debilitating chronic pain. This is due to the misguided campaign by the DEA, which has had a chilling effect on how doctors treat their patients and what they prescribe. This failure is deeply harmful to patients suffering from chronic pain, and can cause lifelong damage, both physically and mentally. It often causes the sufferer to withdraw from society and discourages them from seeking appropriate medical treatment. By discriminating against pain patients in this way, which makes them feel labeled, humiliated, and abandoned, the medical system is unwittingly causing an increase in both depression and suicide among this population of patients. Doctors must instead treat the whole patient, addressing complex medical conditions and the underlying causes of chronic pain when possible. However, there are many instances, from failed surgeries to repeated injury and connective tissue diseases, when doctors are not yet able to clearly identify the cause of pain. It exists nonetheless. Concerns about possible addiction must be balanced with a concern for the patient's quality of their life and their right to live their life to live without debilitating pain. I have a genetic connective tissue disease, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, which is associated with high levels of joint pain. For several years, I have been able to avoid taking anything for the pain, but I am concerned that this option will not be available to me, should I need it as my disease progresses. Chronic pain patients are not the cause of the current opioid abuse epidemic. To understand that, we should be looking at the dangerous marketing practices of pharmaceutical companies, the absurdly high case loads that many doctors are forced to carry, and the failure of our health care system to value meaningful relationships between doctors and their patients.     So far, I have been pretty lucky w/ finding understanding doctors re: pain meds, w/ the exception of one seedy, but well-known pain clinic, several years ago: As soon as I walked into the door, they said, "We don't prescribe narcotics" (not that I had asked for any!) But I am concerned that the entire medical profession is burnt out, taking out its frustration on chronic patients. I have recently been a victim of physician verbal abuse, and so, cannot give my name. The entire profession needs to re-evaluate itself and its ethics-- and oaths, if they took any; meanwhile, the gov't and insurance companies should require less paperwork (which is also a contribution towards doctor burnout). I believe that such legislation as this is merely scapegoating vulnerable patients, when the scandal and negligence of so-called healthcare in this country runs much, much deeper.

    I had a traumatic experience with a pain clinic, You don't give a person who has a tumor injections. it causes them to grow, my spine is all messed up beyond repair.I was told that I have a annular tear from my L5 to my S1 and my cushion between my disk are dehydrated. and Because of it I won't do injections. as soon as a pain clinic brings up injections i said no. they kicked me off my pain meds. Not just 1 clinic all pain clinics kicked me off. I can't find a dr to treat my chronic pain. I also have chronic pain due to terminal Scleroderma. And Fibromyalgia. the chronic constant pain is causing me to be depressed, I can't eat or sleep because of the pain. I have no life. I have tried to kill myself once already. I want my life back. Constant pain is debilitating and Nobody should have to live with pain. The chronic constant pain has ruined my family life. My kids and grandkids don't want to see me or talk to me because it kills them to see me in pain or hear the pain in my voice. Am I to turn to the drug dealers to buy pain meds?? No the pain isn't all in my head or caused by depression. its the constant pain that's causing me to be depressed.

    I have chronic pain from what is being labeled as Fibromyalgia. Maybe it's something else, who knows. But the fact that I can't get help when I have accute pain is ridiculous. I only need heavy meds occasionally. It's hard enough for Doctors to sift through drug addicts as it is. And besides. Drug Addiction isn't going to be helped this way. Treat the disease. That will help.

    It's a relief to see that people are starting to recognize the demoralizing, and downright appalling scrutiny so many are dealing with. And most are guilty of nothing more than suffering with chronic pain. Depressing, devastating, and most often debilitating, chronic pain. For twenty years I've watched my dad suffer in pain. For the first ten years he was prescribed oxycontin, a very strong, long- acting narcotic, for a spinal cord injury. He hated the way it made him numb emotionally. So he decided, on his own to discontinue the pain meds, and sought out a new doctor, hopi g to fond an alternative. After a horrible withdrawal period, that caused mini strokes, he continued pain med free for several weeks. He came to realize he needed the relief the pain meds provided more than once thought. However, his previous attempt to go drug free had caused his new doctor to red flag him, making it near impossible to get help in the way of narcotic pain medication, despite numerous MRI's, and x-rays of his extensive injuries. It took going to the local Methadone Clinic, and asking who was known to have the worst reputation when it came to prescribing painpills too easily. They gave me a name and i had dad in to see him the next week. I needed to be sure we were going to a doctor that hadn't become so fearful of DEA scrutinizing, that he would compromise morhis oath as a doctor, or his morals as a human being. It's been a battle to say the least. Dad is now on a pain pump, and making slow progress. But, there should have never been a day go by that he had to suffer like he did.

    The way chronic pain sufferers are treated is unfair and is in direct violation of Bill of Rights. Make some of these pain pills available over the counter and take away power of cartels. I've tried killing myself 3 times over my pain and it's not feeling any better. I hate the way I feel, I hate the way I'm treated, and I hate the dependence on the drug. I'd gladly switch if someone could invent something that works, but doesn't have the negative side effects of opiates. I hope this gets fixed because I have at least another 20 years and so far I'm going crazy.

    I FELL WHILE LIMBING A TREE IN 2002 AND COMPRESSED T-12. I HAVE BEEN IN CHRONIC PAIN SINCE. MY DOCTOR RETIRED LAST YEAR BECAUSE OF ALL THE RULE CHANGES THAT THE DEA HAS MADE. I WENT TO SEVERAL PAIN CLINICS BUT THEY COULDNT TREAT MY PAIN ADEQUATELY AND BECAUSE OF WHAT RESTICTIONS THE DEA HAS PLACED ON THEM. I HAVE BEEN IN PAIN AND GOING BROKE SINCE HE RETIRED.DOCTOR SAID SURGERY IS NOT AN OPTION. LIVING IN PAIN IS NOT MUCH OF ONE EITHER. I RECENTLY LOST MY JOB OF 12 YEARS BECAUSE OF THE MEDICATION I TAKE. THEY SAID I APPEARED SEDATED ON THE JOB. I WENT TO THE UT SLEEP DISORDER CENTER AND WAS DIAGNOSED WITH SEVERE OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA. TVA DIDNT GIVE MY REPORT ANY CREDIT AND TERMINATED ME 10/31/15, MY INSURANCE WAS ALSO CANCELLED ON THIS DATE SO I AM REALLY LOVIN LIFE WITH MY CURRENT CONDITION, THE DEA HAS REALLY FIXED THE PILL MILL PROBLEM FOR SURE. I HAD A MASS REMOVED FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY CHEAST. THE DOCTOR SENT ME HOME WITHOUT ANY MEDS, I GUESS HE WAS SCARED,

    There will be larger problems if patients are unable to manage their pain adequately. More ER visit , repeat admissions and more people turning to the streets for pain relief. Insurance companies should be mandated to pay in full acupuncture , message, reiki, oils, and physical therapy and full gym memberships and have a multi disciplinary approach for chronic pain suffers.

    I don't think we are speaking to rational human beings here. They are of satins offsprings as far as my intelligence tell me. What kind of person can watch another suffer? Not having any kind of remorse about what they do. There is a word in there own books that describe there mind , and it starts socialpathic behavior along with I believe the word narcissism . They cant stand the thought of us having some peace if they don't have it. How else do you take a patient that has been on the same med and same strength for 7 years and turn him into an outlaw. I really don't believe this is about abusers etc. The" great" one is looking for a perfect world. I have seen diabetes go untreated in some, cancer without being told to patient untreated until it is to late to cure. And of course us pain patients that they wish were dead. I don't think I have to remind them of what chair they picked out of the two. Those who know will understand that meaning. Its not over with just yet. I know who wins in the end.

    Why is is against the law to get help for pain. Why Do they want to make poor people that are suffering have to try to find help on the street. Why do they want to make pain sufferers criminals. Why does my own country hate me. If my pain gets much worse i wont be able to make any tax money and instead probably have to go on welfare soon or A bullet to the brain is probably the best way i guess.
