I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy 15+ years. A few years after my diagnosis, it became physically unsafe for me to continue working as a medical assistant. A job I absolutely loved. Since then, I have been fighting for disability benefits with little to no progress. About 3 years ago, I hired a lawyer to help with the process. After being denied twice, I finally got word this week that I will receive an appeal in front of a judge. I pray for a good outcome for all of us fighters out there.

I suffer from idiopathic hypersomnia which has devastating life effects the same as narcolepsy and should be included as such.

Narcolepsy is not only dangerous but is also extremely disabling. I'm surprised to learn it is not recognized as such.

I've just been denied SSDI, I have been out of work since May last year. None of the combinations of medications have been able to put me back into the working force. I'm so deep in debt because I bought a house and a car that I can't continue paying on because I thought I would be working the rest of my life. I need ssdi, I have suffered for years with multiple symptoms of narcolepsy with cataplexy, including sleep paralysis, hypoagogic hallucinations, night terrors, day terrors, automatic behaviors, insomnia, and I have even hurt myself in my sleep. I was told by my boss not to fall asleep at work but that is like asking someone not to sit in a wheelchair when I don't have the symptoms under control. Please add this debilitating illness to ssdi.

After 20 years of misdiagnosis I finally found answers. I am a narcoleptic. It ruined my marriage, many of my friendships, I have missed our on many major events in my life as well as my daughter's. I almost lost my job, one I love and enjoy. Currently I am functioning well on medication, however at some point, that will not be the case. Please add narcolepsy to the blue book so people will finally recognize this completely debilitating disorder as a real disability. I'm not lazy or just tired. I have no control over my symptoms. Believe me when I say that no one "wants" to give up and draw SSD. What we want is the ability to support ourselves and try to live reasonably normal lives.

Narcolepsy is a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder. Its adverse affect on primary systems translates to devastating physical, psychological, cognitive, social, & emotional effects for those afflicted. It's a life-sentence of randomly imposed helplessness; unpredictable vulnerability. Minimally, it steals your energy; more often it strips you of so much more: time, memories, intellect, abilities, self-reliance, confidence, independence, and freedom. What would you do if your brain stopped working? Who would help you?

This is a condition that impacts me personally, making it challenging to go about day to day activities. I live in fear that someday I will no longer be able to work due to this condition.

I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy about 9 years ago. The only good thing is that it won't kill me but it is a day to day battle. Please help us!
