I suffer from narcolepsy. This horrible disease makes it hard to make daily tasks possible.

Narcolepsy needs to be considered as a disability. I have struggled with this disease for many years. From 3 failed college attempts to approximately 50 different jobs in the last 15 years, it has made my life unusually difficult. I had to send my children to live with family when they were younger because I didn't trust myself with keeping them safe, I fall asleep ANYWHERE constantly and have several Cataplexy attacks a day, I can no longer drive a vehicle for longer than 15 minutes, my social life has taken a huge nose dive over the years because I am embarrassed about my cataplexy, I miss entire days...like I will think it's Tuesday but it's Wednesday and I'll have no recollection of what I did or what went on on Tuesday, I have problems focusing, like my mind is in a constant fog and I have problems concentrating, I fall asleep during conversations in person and over the phone. I could go on and on because I have been living with this for over 20 years!! Finding a job is always a challenge and a risk. You can either put on your application that you are Narcoleptic and pray that you get a phone call, which in my experience, has NEVER happened, or you can leave it off your application and risk being accused of falsifying your job application (which has happened to me at a few jobs) along with possibly injuring yourself and others. This disorder is extremely misunderstood because it is a hidden disorder, but there are a lot of hidden disabilities. Please consider Narcolepsy as a disability. Thank you for your time.

Narcolepsy should ABSOLUTELY be considered a disabling condition. It has changed my life in so many ways. I can no longer be behind the wheel of a car for more than 10 minutes (sometimes less) without falling asleep. I can no longer think clearly...cannot focus long enough to complete a task. I've been known to fall asleep sitting up talking on the phone. I sometimes go into a narcolepsy symptom known as "automatic behavior" where I can do familiar repetitive tasks but when I snap out of it I have no idea what I was doing. I don't know many employers who would put up with these behaviors for any length of time. Not to mention, we are probably putting innocent people in harms way every time a narcoleptic gets behind the wheel to drive to work, or anywhere else for that matter. Please, please consider narcolepsy as a debilitating disease...because that is absolutely what this disease is...debilitating and life changing!!

Narcolepsy effects the brain functions because of lack of sleep at night. Brain processes like memory, word recollection, calculations, are negatively effected. It's more than a sleep problem.
