I am an M.D. Narcolepsy can be incredibly debilitating and, though invisible, should be given the same consideration for SSI that other neurological diseases have. -

I am currently on my sixth appeal, waiting for my second hearing. I have struggled for many years, going from job to job, trying to maintain a somewhat normal life. I have tried various medications, with limited success. I have gone through homelessness due to this illness and the pressure from not being able to perform my job duties has even pushed me to the brink of attempting to take my own life. This is a devastating, and very debilitating illness, and it needs to be recognized as such.REPORT COMMENTS

This condition took 12 years to diagnose in me, during which time I had so many additional medical concerns develop from this unique medical problem, including uncontrollable blood pressure spikes. I was shocked to learn how many medical issues I was experiencing were caused by my Narcolepsy.REPORT COMMENTS

I have been fired from 2 jobs due to being unable to maintain a constant sleep schedule. The first basic tennant of any job is being able to arrive at work on time. People with narcolepsy and circadian sleep disorders such as delayed sleep phase and non-24 (which many overlook that this is often present in sighted people) are very unlikely to be able to meet this basic condition of employment.REPORT COMMENTS

This condition has destroyed the possibilities of where my life could have been, the sculptures and paintings started in my mind, what I wanted to do, remaining forever elusive, continually beyond my grasp as sleep cycles with consciously wasting away rendering my life a wasteland.REPORT COMMENTS

I have this horrible disease. It's only worsened over the last 3yrs. I was ultimately fired from my last job from the effects that Narcolepsy causes. I've been denied twice for Social Security and am pending a hearing! I've lost my independence, I've lost my zest for life, my depression has gotten 100x's worse, I'm about to lose my home and my marriage. This is a very debilitating disease! It needs to be recognized! It's extremely similar to epilepsy with its attacks. Just doesn't have the thrashing like epilepsy! Please add this to your lost!REPORT COMMENTS

Idiopathic Hypersomnia is a close cousin of narcolepsy with many of the same effects on a person's ability to work. It can also co-occur with other debilitating mental and emotional illnesses.REPORT COMMENTS
