I have a one year old and a two year old. I am looking forward to sending them both to headstart to learn how to interact with other kids and in a different enviorment. Business as usual, tax cuts for the Rich, drastic cuts for the poor. For Example: If you want to know why we're facing vicious budget cuts across the country, look no further than General Electric, America's largest corporation. According to a shocking exposé just published by the New York Times, GE made over $26 billion in profit in the United States during the last five years, but paid nothing in federal income tax. Zero. In fact, it claimed a $4.1 billion net tax benefit from the IRS during that time.1 Meanwhile, lack of revenue is causing brutal cutbacks of vital services at all levels of government. We shouldn't be firing teachers and taking health care away from children, or cutting head start because GE is shirking on its responsibility to pay income tax, and this is only one example. The head start program has been a god sent program for rural Missouri for kids who would have never gotten a head. It would be an absolute tragedy to loose this program. For some kids this is away out of abuse and neglect. And now the govement would be the neglector if they let this program go.REPORT COMMENTS

After his first kindergarten readiness screening, my child was referred to speech therapy. He was able to attend head start the year before kindergarten and as a result no longer needed special classes; he is also in the gifted program now. Head start is a great opportunity for any child, not just low income families. Not only should the current facilities remain open, but there should be more facilities added throughout the community that are able to serve all families. Maybe they could be set up on a sliding fee scale and have parents pay for the services? On another note, beside the educational benefits, Head Start is the only place some children have access to healthy meals, even throughout the summer when classes are not in session.REPORT COMMENTS

But go-ahead punish those that need help the most as usual, poor people and their children. We need this program in Washington County. Closing Head Start will cause a loss of jobs, that we can't afford to lose in our county. Jobs are far and few between in rural Mo.We are a very poor county, and this is something that can help promote education and dental health to our youngest generation. It is also a program that makes sure these children have at least one balanced meal a day. Please take this into consideration when making the decision about closing Head Start.REPORT COMMENTS
