I am a head start teacher and every day I see how head start not only helps the children in my classroom but the families as well. On a personal level my son went to head start and again I saw and still see how he benefits from head start. I have been teaching g at Head Start for nearly fifteen years. I have seen so much need for the children and families over the past years and it has only gotten worse. If funding continues to decrease and we loose more Head Starts, our children risk the chance for successful futures. They loose a safe haven for the few hours they are given each day from us. Depriving these kids of nutritious meals and school readiness skills would be a tragic mistake that would lead to both short- and long-term academic underachievement. Working for Head Start for 11 years has given me the opportunity to learn and teach children who need the services. Head Start helps families with low income to continue an education and seek work. Head Start provides education (language, cognitive knowledge, math/manipulative, social/emotional, creative, writing, science, music, pretend/learn, construction, fine/gross motor skills) nutrition, health, and many more services for these children. The lives of our children are a crucial investment for our future. Children learn the most and shape their worldview during their preschool years. Many families would not be able to send their children to preschool if it wasn't for head start. This program is one of the most valuable programs our government has provided for the people. This will be the last week several head starts will be open due to budget cuts and these families will have to find a way to provide for their children. About 8-10 centers in my area alone are closing. Please consider the importance of preschool for low income families and their children. All lives matter. Save head start!REPORT COMMENTS

The sequester cost the loss of services to 42 children in Spokane Co. Prior to these sequester cuts only 24% of the income eligible children were being served in the zip code with highest poverty concentration in WA. state. Now, the remaining families being served by HS/EHS are looking at a total loss of services. Lawmakers should all return to preschool for a remedial lesson in listening, cooperation and learning to share and negotiate.
